Solid Blanka and Boxer pwned my Gouki today at the arcade.
I’m pretty familiar with how to deal with Blanka - just got caught in some shenanigans and didn’t adapt accordingly.
Anyways, Boxer seems to be my hardest matchup. There was a good tournament player there today who was on a rampage with Boxer, beating me everytime - but I stuffed his other characters ( who he is just as skilled with ).
I’m not sure if this is sure fire demon, but I caught him headbutting through ranged lp.hadou. I know he knew the mechanics of RD, but he got grabbed. Somewhere around 3/5 screen or so IIRC.
Fought some Ryu players. FADC through fireball > sweep > vortex FTMFW. So gratifying. So sweeeeet.
EDIT: Exploding Heart technique seemed to beat out reversal Electricity. Could have been my bad timing, but I was BBalled out of my cross-up tatsus ( not sure if it was Upball or Straightball )
yea… headbutt it caught by demon. I bait that shit all day in the match. Usually only get it once MAYBE for each thing (TAP, EX move, jump-in, headbutt) before a good rog stops fooling around at long range. Just watch them carefully and the moment you start to see them move at all you just active the ultra… no reason NOT to buffer those lp after a FB… and thats ANY fireball other than in combos. Easy Peasy lemon-squeezy. And it can be full screen even. And I’m CERTAIN its somewhere in the other akuma thread… somewhere near the first pages I know I must have talked about it…lol.
Try HK instead of sweep… or focus through and ultra… made a kid quit doing that earlier today…lol (well… it was super but still). But sweep is good if at a slightly farther range because ppl don’t think to block right away after a fb so you get more leeway.
The up ball hurts jump in stuff period. It counts HIM as catching YOUR leg. Or if timed a little different he’ll just zoom to the opposite side of the screen from you. Makes it very hard to legitimately jump in on the furry dude. Tatsu doesn’t have the best frames to it honestly. The thing is to prepare an ultra in case he does the other side of screen zoom from the up ball.
I find blanka to be the only character where the … oki game… actually has any real trouble getting started. Just feels its a lot more “bait and punish” than actually trying to use a move he can’t counter. Most matches its them having to guess how to counter you. With blanka its you trying to guess how to not get countered. And his weird ass hitbox doesn’t help matters.
I was whiffing c.lp > c.mp xx lk.tatsu on standing Blanka all day… Goddamned muscle memory. Usually the hit box is still in range after c.lp > c.mp…
I agree. Blanka is the only character - to this date - that fucks with my mind. I couldn’t get any decent oki on him at all.
EDIT: and about FADC > fs.hk. I was unconfident and trying to play hella safe against the guy. Will put it to use next time  Even though I lose alot more often with Gouki than when I use Roggy… it’s much much more satisfying when I finally do go on a short streak.
Coming from someone in your same situation ( been maining rog forever and akuma is my alt ) I can absolutely confirm what you said. Streaking with akuma is so much more satisfying. I miss rog’s great normals tho
the safe jump from d+mk after a connected sweep works on blanka as well… easy to time once you’ve done it in training made a few times… hitting him with the sweep is the hard part for me…
With that in mind dime, do you think it would be worth it to FADC a fireball just to get sweep? I haven’t really been able to play any Blankas to test out some of my own ideas lately… but if the safejump you were talking about in the other thread works for Blanka as well (I assume it would since it works on the other 5 frame reversals) then this might be a good way to get the opportunity.
lol Akuma’s the new Boxer, everybody’s using him… except he’s harder to actually be “good” with. Since he’s not fun at all for me I’ll just be sitting in the corner with my shitty 'ol charge characters, lol.
@Gator: Once you get the knockdown it’s just a matter of baiting and properly punishing EX Up Ball/Ultra if he has the meter, or doing a meaty c.MK xx FB on him if he doesn’t have meter (It’s free if you can time it right). When it comes to actually getting the knockdown then depending on the type of player your best bet is either sweep during footsies (Preferably to punish a whiffed poke) or pressuring him after jabbing him out of a random ball.
Is he? I’m like one of the only Gouki players in the local arcades that I frequent. If you look at the cab stats, it’s all Sagat, Ryu, Ken, Balrog on top percentage… and oddly Guile IIRC.
not… sure why this is directed at me. But okey-dokey lol. I tend to SRK out of balls… not jab. Not sure why so many ppl like to merely jab him when they can easily get full HP SRK damage on someone using a ball at anything but close range. But I totally agree that he’s become the new boxer online. The only thing is that the ppl online using him such can’t use him as well as they could boxer just because the skill difference from bad and decent is much smaller for boxer than akuma. Which is fine by me… free win… but the match-up is kinda annoying with all the jump back fireballs lol. Still don’t know why they try to wake-up SRK like they are playing ken or ryu or sagat though *palm.
And for sweeps I get the majority of mine on blanka from punishing bad up balls that I don’t feel I can reach in time to punish with a combo and comboing off a FB FADC at weird ranges. Otherwise I’ve just found it a matter of seeing what you can get. Nothing easily guaranteed like sagat. And its great when the blanka starts focusing cuz then its ultra cancel time.
@ Dime - I’ll remember that next time I have an ultra waiting in the wing so I can punish or maybe if i corner the furball. I started using the normal dive kick more often since starting to play again (in part because I started using seth more than I used to) recently and I guessed it was a safe-jump but it didn’t feel like it was working when I tried it (probably was against someone you say it doesn’t work on). I’ll have to try and add that in maybe. Problem is I get the majority of my time right now online and those ppl will get hit by a cross-tatsu almost EVERY time… kinda ruins the fun of the wake-up shenanigans… as well as being bad practice. But I take what I can get.
i wasn’t saying that cross- tatsu is a bad move or its always blocked. Just saying it is NEVER blocked online…lol. My cross tatsu’s get blocked about 0/100 times against most players and about 3/10 times against good players because I keep them honest on their blocking (and sometimes they even KNOW you are crossing with tatsu (feel like you will) but they need that Sagat FADC f.HK Ultra to land dammit! lol.
Its all about keeping them honest and not using it EVERY damn time. Don’t know how many times though online my wake-up goes 1. Tatsu cross trip (they SRK and get hit) 2. Tatsu cross trip (SRK and get hit 3. Empty jump option select tech (SRK in the face) 4. Tatsu cross trip (SRK and they get hit… i think you get the point…sigh.
It was actually supposed to be directed at Mango and Dime, dunno what I was thinking lol… but seriously, I’m seeing a lot more people in general pick up Akuma either after seeing Ed Ma’s at EVO or just realizing the extent of his stuff. And yeah, srk >>> jab when it comes to stuffing balls, but some people just can’t do that on reaction, hence they jab. And yeah, people doing wakeup naked srks with Akuma and Seth is pure lulz.
Yeah. I’m purely arcade player. I tried online again and I couldn’t walk forward and block on reaction. Shit always hit me . Raged to no end.
@ Dullyanna
Gouki enthusiast since SVC Chaos, but I guess big tournies influence the masses much. I heard on the Boxer forums that after JWong played Boxer against Diego Umejuarez, every other scrub online was picking him.
A distance of 3/4 the screen can be a safe fireball by any jump-in or focus-in attempts, but not safe to anti-fireball tatsu. The tatsu of course has to be done on instinct and not on reaction to the fireball, but that’s the point. Akuma can use tatsu to travel over FB’s as well you know.
I usually go for a Lp Srk in the middle of it and i hardly ever trade. But i was looking for something to make Spammers more afraid of spamming this shit.
Btw, I was playing today against a friend who has a pretty good Zangief and we played almost 20 matches in which he learned a bunch of stuff against Akuma that scared me.
He increased the number of times in which he could trade Lariat with Demon Flip x Dive Kick by walking corectly with Zangief.
He increased the number of time in which he could backdash SPD the Dive Kick. Ouch.
Learned my teleport patterns and punished with ultra.
Learned to pressure the hell out of me in the corner since i was afraid of gettint punished from teleporting.
Shit is getting hard and real against Zangief around here…
