It pretty much what every other take on Lupid did to escape from Prison.
They used the dumbest shit to sneak their way out. They even showed you the page where he got the idea from the Novel.

They had a episode coving a similar concept of a prison escape, Lupid got caught sent to prison to get executed in a years time. Dude was stripped nude and put in a straight jacket the whole time.
Crazy fuck screamed “I am not Lupid” all the time, and refuse to cut his hair or his nails.
Day before his execution, he request a shave, he broke out of the straight jacket (with a sharped finger nail) knocked out the guard who bringing him the shaving kit, shaved, used the clippings to disguise the guard as himself and he wore the guard uniform and walked out. Only stopping for a moment to tell Inspector Zenigata that they are sending a innocent man to the chair.
Obviously you aren’t pulling this shit in real life, but its done well enough where my suspension of disbelief isn’t broken.

This show is based on the classic 1910 novel
I say original Anime as there 4 more Anime series, actual motion picture by Hayao Miyazaki and numerous OVAs for the anime since.

I’m going to need Netflix to bring back Teenage Bounty Hunters, The Society, and I Am Not Okay With This. The latter two I checked them out because of the promos I saw on social media. TBH I saw because I saw the “ad” for it when I opened Netflix and I also saw Kadeem Hardison. Can’t go wrong with Kadeem. Turned out I enjoyed more than I thought I would.
The Great Pretender is a great anime on Netflix.
