The Monster Hunter Thread

for jap Frontier wouldn’t you need a jap IP. not sure where i heard it but the jap servers block all non-japanese IPs.

Oh I can do it earlier too. PM me or something and we can set up a SRK room for nubs or something :pleased:

Anyone have any plesioth tips? its been a while and he just two-shot me…

only good plesioth tip i can advise is DON’T GET HIP CHECKED EVER. other than that, by now you should have realized that the hip check’s hit box is disgustingly bigger than what it appears to be. other than that i suggest bring a weapon allows you to block or use a bow with fire/lightning element(forgot which element plesy is more vulnerable to).

also bring a couple frogs to fish it out is fine if you run out of sonic bombs. plus who knows you might get the special kill if you fish it out.

Bow the sonic bow that is. If you are at least Hr4 get it. Easiest way to kill it.

Ok about the adhoc rooms. Is it only for MHF2g?

Monster Hunter 3 video preview:

…no…FRIEND CODES

what mission are you in, what are your gear options? Thunder and paralyze are the best choice to bring for SnS, DS, long swords, bows. The “best” thunder lances (Thunderlance, go figure) do less total damage than strong raw lances, so it’s up to you for that. There isn’t a thunder gunlance (Gold Dragoonwood Gunlance is a good paralyze option, though), and raw >>>>> element for GS so just bring your highest raw damage GS, forget element. For bowguns, pierce and paralyze are better than thunder.

If possible, bring frogs to fish him out. Jungle mission has a gathering point to get more frogs if you need them. Optionally, bring sonic bombs if you’re willing to deal with him in rage mode, though those won’t always make him jump onto land.

The good thing about plessy is that he only moves between two areas in either map. Jungle plessy can be a good deal easier to deal with if you’re patient and can survive more than 1-2 hits, since you can always run back to camp, sleep, and then you’re still right next to the action. Desert plessy is less convenient though in a pinch you can do something similar (longer trek to camp, but you can jump down the well to get back into the fray).

Generally speaking you want to move towards his left (your right) as he never hip checks in that direction. If you are between his legs to avoid the tail whip, hit him a few times and then roll out to his left so you have time to roll again and get away from the magic hitboxes :looney:

Generic melee rule is keep your weapon sheathed, move to his left, when he leaves an opening you hit him in the belly/neck/legs. If he doesn’t stagger, don’t do a full combo, just do a few safe hits and back off unless you know you’ll stagger him on that run. Alternatively, stand between his legs and wail on his belly/legs, and roll out after a few hits to avoid hip check. These methods pretty much sum up all you need to know for SnS, long swords, and dual swords (for SnS and DS you’re probably aiming to trip plessy more so you can combo/demon dance his belly).

If you have a decent (gun)lance and a Guard +1/2 set (easiest to get before plessy- Hermitaur set), then you can pretty much sit under his legs and poke him in the belly/legs, block when you see the startup for hip check (guard +1/2 will keep you close) and then go back to poking him in the belly lol. If you have dragonwood gunlance this is even more silly 'cuz he’ll get paralyzed every so often.

With hammers, safest method is probably to mostly just dodge around to his left and superpound his feet when you get a chance to. If you knock him down, triple pound to the face. Alternatively, stand between his legs and triple pound his belly (or if you can’t manage that, at get the golf swing to hit his belly).
With hunting horns, similar plan, either superpound his legs and dodge to his left or mix regular attacks and superpounds between his legs, then wail on his head if you get a trip.

If you are using a bow, Sonic Bow series is your best bet for thunder element. If you don’t have Sonic Bow, go with whatever has the highest pierce charge level and raw damage. You can manipulate his behavior pretty easily by standing in front of him at a decent distance, which will make him want to do watergun- once you see him start the animation, dodge to the side and shoot him in the face/fin. Bonus of being able to pierce shot through most of his body from that angle. Also a fairly easy angle to hit his fin if you have a good rapid charge.
Bonus for bows/bowguns - for desert plessy, you can stand on the ledge in the cave and shoot him with no fear of counter-attack (except the annoying bugs, and also the Gendrome in the high rank mission).

The watergun bait method can be done closer to bait him into waterguns so you can punish with melee weapons, but you’re more prone to get hit by other random stuff at that range so shrug.

With a strong enough GS you can actually stagger him with one lvl3 charge to the stomach or neck, or a lvl3 charge + change (possibly another lvl3 charge) to stagger him in the legs (two leg staggers generally = trip). has useful info for GS vs. plessy, though to summarize for those too lazy to watch it:
To 1-hit stagger the belly or neck with a lvl3 charge, your GS needs at least:
elder - 747 attack
low rank (HR1-3) - 830
high rank (HR4-6) - 996

To 1-hit stagger the legs, your GS needs at least:
elder -1493 (lol)
low rank - 1658 (lol)
high rank - 1991 (lol)

So pretty much you would need something like Siegmund or Diablos Destroyer with Adrenaline +2 or Feline Heroics just to 1-hit stagger an elder plessy in the legs =p ie. assume you’ll need two charges to stagger the legs, one to stagger neck or stomach.

Some good times to hit him with a charge are:

 • as he starts watergun- stand by his leg, a bit to the side, and start your charge as his watergun starts; he’ll turn a bit as he recovers, so you can get your full charge in (hits belly). If you didn’t stand in quite the right place, you might hit his neck instead, which is still a flinch but less damage. Roll away, roll again if you need to avoid hip check. Best done on his left (your right) but can be done on his right.
 • after his silly shuffle move. Only really works if he shuffled into a wall/shoreline and you had time to catch up. Fairly safe as you aren’t likely to get hit by that.
 • if you dodge/run around his hip check, you can get into position to hit him as he returns to “neutral,” so to speak. After a hip check, he will always backstep from his new orientation (moving in a triangle when all is said and done), so ideally you want to start your charge before the backstep, then nail him in when he turns around to face you after the backstep. Exact positioning is kinda hard to describe, the video shows a few examples to give a better idea.
 • after you knock him down. Duh, right? Pretty much if your charge knocks him down, roll, reposition, charge, let him have it as he gets up.

Other hints for GS

 • don’t worry if you can’t consistently get lvl3 timings down pat, you can settle for lvl2 charges if it’s safer and just get the stagger with another charge or miscellaneous unsheathe attacks or circle (circle is actually pretty good as it’s quick and lets you roll cancel fairly quickly so it’s a good move to tack on some damage when you don’t have time for a charge to build towards a stagger, or after a stagger to tack on some damage before rolling to safety). Unsheathe attack is just really good to begin with. Unsheathe attack > circle > roll is a strong pattern for when you’re too far to get into position for a full charge. Circle is also really good if you have your weapon out and have an opening to do damage.
 • blocking is really good. You can almost do the (gun)lance thing of staying under his legs, wailing away, and blocking hip checks, but it can eat at your sharpness pretty quickly so I would recommend only blocking when you aren’t sure if you can dodge an attack. Blocking is hella good though, so might as well do it.

Oh man, only one weapon away from getting rid of every single weapon I didn’t like

The P2P news is saddening, though. The offline multiplayer will have to be incredibly awesome to make it worth importing (and buying/modding a Wii) now.

Am I the only one who thought this thread was going to be about the show on the History channel?

perhaps… though that wouldn’t explain how US players were paying for and playing MHFO on Japanese servers.

-edit-
You can trick the game by masking your IP, apparently. As long as you don’t give a hint that you’re not Japanese, apparently you can get by just fine?

no

Any SRKers on xlink?

Technically if you use a VPN service you can easily get a japanese IP address.

And fighting plessy is pretty easy with a gunlance, you can block every “in your face” move (IE: His hip check) and you can hold block and hit triangle for a three hit upwards attack.

So long as you can block/avoid his hip check, he’s easy as all hell.

has anyone else been playing monster hunter g on the wii? i am in search of comrades.

for those of you who don’t know, the game comes with a 14-day free online trial. the bad news is that you kinda have to f-af4JBdV38&fmt=18]screw around with your wii a bit. a classic controller is required to play, and the game is in japanese. some guy over at is working on an english translation patch though.

Tatsu! invite me over so i can see the game and get addicted to this crack. Kurt and I were talking about it, and since he’s already retired from sf4, i should retire from sf4 too and go adventuring with you guys!

I wanna see this game!! im insanely curious.

Get me addicted to the crack so i can sell my 360 (which i bought by selling my wii), and rebuy my wii to play!

Something happened to me yesterday. Something so wild and unnatural that I would have never believed it was possible.

I always joked about the Dizziness effect in MH. It’s like, that is SO Capcom. You can tell that the devs who made this had Street Fighter on the brain. I just didn’t know how obsessed they could get.

A monster fucking Combo’d me.

I couldn’t finish the Khezu urgent quest, so I went into the Training hall to practice. I equipped the bowgun and went off to fight it. I was doing very well; fighting it from a distance without ever being hit. But then it went into dickmode. Khezu Thunder Hopped me and knocked my ass on the ground, did a Rage Roar while I was getting up to stun me, and then pulled out his Blanka-like “Thunder Shield”. I had not one chance to get up, and he managed to take away all of my HP.

 That used to happen to me all the time. Now it just catch that Long Sword all day. Me and DaddyNeptune could rape Khezu for fun if we wanted. Think we already did that. Individually I can do that though.

Yessssssss:badboy:

I remember when I made a thread about this franchise in the PSN forums last year (or maybe earlier) and
maybe that was a mistake because apparently it was still too early for something that really hadn’t caught
popularity yet as it did months later with the 3 PSP games and now that it’s online on PC/Japan and has
MH3/Wii soon.

I despise to this day that MH3 was cancelled for PS3 but hope have been born that a MH game actually
will still eventually show up on PS3 although I have no idea when or what it’ll be like. I’ve actually also had
enough time now (4 years since PS2/MH went offline) to cool off enough to accept the thought of purchasing
MH3 for the Wii even though I don’t currently own a Wii yet. When I saw the level of depth they were
adding to MH3 for weapon classes and some environmental destruction, I was very impressed.

I still very much want MH2/PS2 though—and I eventually will import it. I miss too much playing that/those
games online. It was all I played amongst my 40 other PS2 games—MH and MGS3: Online (MGO).

you might want to give the game demon’s souls a try. it’s a ps3 exclusive that plays a lot like monster hunter while retaining an identity of its own

it’s also very unforgiving and ball-bustingly difficult (like monster hunter!)

It’s not out yet is it? (US/EU?) I very much already know about this game…I’ve been watching
it.
