I still take my Switch everywhere and play Monster Hunter XXā¦but lately Iāve been wishing for a Switch exclusive update to the X series that adds a āWorldā Hunter Style. Simply a style that makes your weapons function the way they do in MHW. And few ported monsters. Hey, had a thought: the Sapphire Star the leader refers toā¦Iāve seen that in XX, and itās nothing to pray to. Itās a freakin Valfalk. Does this game take place before/during XX or is the X series considered to have never really occurred in the MH canon?
The Commander went to the New World 50 years before you do. Past that Iām not sure.
Iām liking the open maps. It takes getting used to not running between zones but I feel once you get used to tracking and using your map itās better.
The open maps are amazing. This game has innovated the series in a way thatās long overdue IMO. This game is everything Iāve ever wanted in MH, goddamn. Iāll say, I was hoping weād get a new weapon as it seems like it was time for another one but itās no big deal.
How is the HR difficulty so far??? I hadnāt played for 3 years but after a weekend marathon Iāve really gotten my mojo back and Iām wrecking everything.
Low level quests are easier. It doesnāt have a town/city, the monsters just scale based on how many people are in the game. Itās ultimately easier in a full party but single player the Monsters arenāt as hard. In other games Ratholos is just Ratholos. Single or multi.
Eventually theyāll introduce some bullshit hard events and high level quests for vets. Some newer players are already struggling with basic stuff.
After playing 200 hours of MHP3rd leading upto World Iād say the difficulty is around the same, but the reason a lot of previous players are having an easier time is because weāve seen this song and dance before. Your first few ranks can be rough as new/returning player but once you get nuances everything just clicks nicely.
As for HR difficulty, itās def a few notches up. Higher damage, some mobs are more aggressive, etc. Iām sure thereāll be some proper bullshit later on though.
Thoughts:

[*] R1 vs R2 for guard/sprint stuffs
Preference really. but it may make a difference for oneās playstyle config.
I use R1 for guard (with R2 for sprint stuffs); transitions to āGuardā, āDash Attackā, āCounter Thrustā, and āGuard Dashā all feel natural and familiar with R1 setup, to me anyway.
[*] New moves
Forward Step is a really nice movement option addition.
āPower Guardā is a nice option to use to diminish pushback during a guard reaction, when applicable.
For āDash Attacksā, being able to sidestep and 180-degree turn adds to mobility/positioning stuffs.
The addition of a āFinishing Twin Thrustā (after a āDash Attackā charge level-up) is nice, but YMMV.
āLeaping Thrustā (after a āGuard Dashā) is a nice (multi-hit) attack option, though YMMV.

IMO, using the Lance w/ all the new movement options feels really good.
I hardly notice forward step as I still 180 backhop or use advancing guard. The one time I notice it a lot is when I want to advancing guard, dash, advancing guard to close distance without either charging or going into an attack.
The sidehops on the charge are really useful.
The power guard letting you go straight into a charged counter thrust makes for some interesting punishes. There seems to be some timing specific stuff with it as well like perfect counters but thatās going to take some time to figure out.
I need to get some more gear with it. Right now Iām using LVL 3 Divine Blessing with elemental damage, attack damage and a health boost. I have some specialised gear but not enough to really explore it. The Mantles seem to give good mileage though. The damage absorption one is a natural fit but the jump one is really useful for sticking charge jump attacks. You kind of figure out shenanigans with it on some maps as well.
If youre planning on getting MHW anytime soon probably not. Itās still a great game though. If you wanna scratch that MH itch, get it. I last played it about a month ago and there were still people playing multi
