The MMA Thread. BJ Penn Didn't Die #HeDeadThough

Well at least FEG doesn’t have the rights to K-1 anymore. I was reading different stories about that and some of them got confusing. Are they trying to bring back Ishii to run it or was he trying to start a “new K-1”?

Does anyone have any grappling advice when fighting taller opponents with long as fuck legs? I usually don’t have a problem with them when I am on the offense but when I’m stuck in their guard its sorta a bitch to get out or they get their back they can just body triangle me all day long. Should I be focusing on something when he tries to get my back?

I assume you mean in a sparring session.
It depends on your body type as well but can you not lock and arm or do joint manipulation?
There are a ton of options but a little more information about a specific scenario and your own body type would help narrow it down.

i find taller people have easier guards to get out of. step your guard escapes up. mess wit leg and ankle locks. step your td game. are their arms long too? cause they tend to more not as good wit subs, but thats only generally.

It smells like strikeforce is on it’s last legs, hardly news but i was expecting at least some more push to make it a farm league ala Strikeforce Challengers.

I’m a stocky guy about 5’7 so normally guys can’t really body triangle me too well but this guy is pretty tall like 6’2 and can wrap his legs around me like nothing. The only defense that I have is that he likes to lock his feet sometimes so I would just press down on his ankles to get an easy tap or to get him off my back. But since I been doing that he decided to do the body triangle which is irritating to say the least. I have been getting better at breaking his guard lately so I don’t really struggle against it much. I’m just wondering if there are anything I should focus since his limbs are so damn long. Would kimuras/paintbrush be more effective than armbars? I get in the armbar position quite often and only nailed it once but I guess since he got tired and gave up.

@maxx: Takedowns are usually not too much a problem for me. I usually get them first against him but sometimes in the scramble he would get my back somehow and that’s where I struggle. Once I get him off he isn’t that much of a problem. I just get a little paranoid when in the guard and suspect to eat a triangle or something.

This is no-gi grappling.

try to pin his hips down with both hands on each hip while backing your hips away. Then turn slightly to one side and creep a knee up in between the space you just created. He might try to do a crunch and break you down, so be ready to protect your arms before he overhooks it. Test and see how it goes.

I train 90% gi, so it’s probably not as simple as it sounds without any grips.

if you’re a great brawler, you can’t have a glass jaw…conversely, if you’re a great grappler, you can’t keep getting triangled.

i fuckin loled when he said sonnen is slow. i dont understand this…he aignt negro speed force fast but he sure aignt fuckin slow either.

personally my tips would be…mind you im not a super duper grappler, im just kinda strong for my size/natural weight.

-keep the pressure on after a td. dont allow him the chance to get up.

-if he does get up…just do it again…mental warfare. people get frustrated if you constantly keep gettin them in the same position. i fuckin love to do double legs when we’re on our knees in grappling…the guys i roll wit get so frustrated cuz i can literally do a shoot off my knees.

-guard/triangle stuff: passes are fuckin key, they should be easier due to his lanky body…and is he especially good at subs? cause for someone to be so lanky its odd he’s good at triangles. Keep your limbs in check, arms tucked in, elbows by your hips when working a guard pass. he wont have a limb to do a triangle.

-if in triangle position: keep the pressure on him, stand up and stack him, work on moving to the side he has the arm on.

yeah after watching that podcast i realized rogan knows nothing about muay thai. For some reason when i’d watch UFC events i just assumed he knew what he was talking about.

Buakaw hasn’t has a serious fight since he fought JWP in jamacia. Since then he’s just been beating up black guys for thai fight.

Lol did his guidance counselor point him down that track?
Can he list “Beating up black people” on a resume?

yeah i know, i guess just cause he was such an authority on bjj and mma i thought he was really into the martial arts scene in general. And when he would talk about muay thai i figured he had some idea about what he was talking about. He just sounded like a n00b that’s seen his first thai event ever in that podcast. ive wasted so much time watching those things though…i can listen to that guy talk forever.

Maybe if it was back in the 60s!

it’s not him persay…its more thai fight. Every time i watch it, it’s either him or khem or some other highly ranked thai beating down some black guy. Like i get the whole org is a way to get international people to dick ride the thais…it’s just funny it’s always some random black dude. that’s asia for you though.

joe has never souned like he understood muay thai…his extent of muay thai is early 2000’s k-1 fighters and slapping the inner thigh.

when schiavello was on rogan’s podcast they had a good conversation about muay thai. rock is right though, joe generally knows what he’s talking about until he gets to politics and science, where he has no fucking clue what he’s talking about most of the time. if you listened to his podcast and had a nickel for everytime he said, “and NOBODY has ANY idea how it works!” you’d be rich.

He is talking about Sonnen being mentally slow not physically slow, or am I being retarded.

All the experienced grapplers in here, what did Vinny do right to be able to get out of that armbar? I mean there are points where I thought his arm was gonna snap in two.

I always thought as long as you had a good grip on the wrist and are able to put pressure on the elbow using your hips, the armbar was golden. Good to know that simple things as adjusting your hips, keeping your elbow away from being parallel and even a clenched fist can keep you in the match.

His shoulder did look like it was on the verge of popping out. But the main thing I noticed was when Werdum changed his grip to grab Vinny’s wrist with his armpit, he lost position. Does that grip really work or was Werdum just going for an adjustment?
