To the guys who train: what are your thoughts on neck cranks? For example, cattle catchers, twister, etc?
We train with them (and heel hooks) with the understanding that they are dangerous but (at least I thought) legal in competition, so it is somewhat surprising to me that a lot of tournaments will not allow either?
I ask because I am going to be in Tampa next week, and considering competing at NAGA (white belt level), but Iâm seeing that neither are allowed -Still trying to clarify if that is in no-gi as wellâŠ
I know a belt is just a piece of fabric, but I wish we had a legit school down here to get an idea of where we (myself and the people I train with) belt-wise, in the eyes of a trainer.
It sounds cheesy, but I wouldnât even mind a no-gi belt system, something similar to that corny shit they gave Couture after his arm triangle over James Toney. Itâs just something to gauge where I am, for my own personal benefit.
No belts at my gym. I only go buy who I can tap and work my way up those on the fight team. I have a long way to go. I guess it doesnât matter to me considering its an MMA gym. Were it strictly jiu jitsu I would want a belt system. What kind of gym are you at Rampage?
No heel hooks at my gym, mostly because everyone goes hard and when you sink one of those in itâs already too late to prevent damage.

Neck cranks are lot allowed.
If you are a beginner they more than likely will not allow heal hooks, neck cranks or anything that causes cervical damage.
Also if you really want to know where you stand you should consider putting on a gi. No-gi is cool and all but the GI makes you think more. You have to use your head. A lot of the great grapplers wear the gi.
