The Mighty Punish Tavern: Tell us of your battles over some of Odins Beer

I’m having a lot of trouble with him, too. His moves come out so fast, even on block, and if he has an assist to cover his pokes it feels like I can’t even move.

I’ve been rocking Wesker/Dante/Skrull for a little bit, but I’m seriously considering C. Viper/Thor/Hulk. What have you been using as a Hurricane Punish Combo? Specifically, the Thor to Hulk aspect. I know you can XFC Mighty Punish (during a block string) to Gamma Quake for the DHC Trick, but I’m curious as to what, if any, experience you have with the similar set up?

“Hurricane Punish”? I’m not sure how you mean that, but I can try to tell you how I typically try to use them. To get into either grab (special or super), I most often do resets. The three I use most (in loose order) are an air combo into M Mighty Strike into fly, then air dash into grab as they come down (I use this most and have really tried to advocate it since I first posted it, but I never hear anyone talking about it), the (standard) L Strike into air dash into grab, and the Mighty Smash otg into grab in the corner. Doing a super jumping grab after a Tornado hyper is good, too, but not very reliable in my experience.

I also like the triangle-jump-slide technique, but I still struggle to hit it consistently in real play, to say nothing of online. And the cr.L to st.H “tick” grab is pretty reliable, since it can work on hit or on block.

After landing one, I usually go for m Mighty Smash into air combo. If it’ll kill, I’ll finish with a Tornado (DHC’d to Gamma Crush if necessary). If not, I’ll probably go for a reset.

In general, you can land Mighty Punish off of almost any of the grounded setups for Hurricane, so it’s a good alternative for some quick damage and/or a DHC (I DHC the second hit into Gamma Crush) if you’ve trained your opponent to block. You can also use it defensively if your timing is good.

My standard BnB’s when Thor and Hulk are teamed up and I want a DHC are air combo into Tornado DHC Crush with Thor, and ground combo into double Gamma Charge into Gamma Crush DHC Tornado with Hulk. Sometimes I run Wesker as third, as his otg gives more combo options.

Edit: Hope that answered at least some of your question.

Hurricane punish as in using Mighty Hurricane to punish Rushdown as an alternative to advancing guard and starting back from square one. I hate all of Thor’s move names. =p

And yeah, that gave me a few ideas. I hate the idea of risky resets, but I need to start incorporating them. Thanks. =)

I don’t have a console of my own anymore, sadly. Just theory crafting from watching streams and teh utubez. Any of Thor’s throws can be used for the DHC trick, right?

e.g. Mighty Hurricane, OTG Assist, s.M, s.H, S, sj.M, sj.H, Air Mighty Tornado >DHC> Gamma Quake (DHC Reset), Hulk Combo, etc. As opposed to just using Mighty Punish from the get-go to DHC into Gamma Quake, Hulk combo.

You know, I’ve never actually tested to see if that works. Thor and Hulk (separately and especially together) do so much damage that looking for ways to increase it seems almost unnecessary, to me. It’s an interesting question, though.

As for Thor’s resets, there are a few of them that really aren’t that risky. The ones that are, are mainly used for really odd situations (like trying to snag someone from a large distance or something). My two favorites (air combo -> m Strike -> fly -> air dash -> grab, and cr.L -> st.H -> grab) are really pretty damn safe, which is why I preach them so much. That’s also the reason I like Thor with delayed assists like Doom’s missiles, since they open up soooo many reset opportunities.

Bit by bit, I’m really starting to have a lot of the faith in Thor that I imagined I would when he was first announced (before all the bad press he started getting). He’s no beginner character, but I think he can be learned to an extent where your opponent REALLY has to be careful or face one-touch-death.

I’ll definitely try those resets out when I get in-game again. Thanks, Ogrim.

No sweat, man. Good luck!

i dont really like c.L s.H xx M/L Mighty Tornado as a RESET - as a combo starter SURE, i’d like to note though that c.Lc.H (which is what most people SHOULD be doing as their bnb starter) can actually also be canceled into a grab that works if they block. c.Lc.H xx L Mighty Tornado acts JUST slowly enough where the kara grab will land if they aren’t airborn!

a much better “reset” than the c.l s.h grab IMO

Yup. Only problem with that is it loses to people holding up-back since u can’t kara a tiger-kneed Mighty Hurricane. So cr.L, cr.M is a better tick into command throw against people who aren’t content holding down-back while spamming out their Tron assist since u can read their jump and still get em. cr.L into Kara Hurricane is super legit tho against people who are choosing to stay grounded.

I wouldn’t really call this a reset more than a block string tho >_>

yea these are not resets. They are technically block strings or tick grabs.

Honestly so many people hold up-back against me that I rarely land the ground version of Mighty Hurricane unless they’re in the corner. Or if I do go for a tick throw setup the opponent will use advancing guard to push me away after blocking the cr.L. So…meh. Good shit if you guys are finding ways to land it though. I do tend to land the ground version pretty often after empty jumps though.

The reason I haven’t been doing M Mighty Strike/Fly/Dash resets is because I can’t get them down to save my life. I can maybe get the first two, but I can never get the Dash into MH, even in Training.

The cr.L -> st./cr.H -> grab isn’t a reset, and I wasn’t trying to suggest it was. I did note it was a tick in my second-to-last post, I was just generalizing for speed on that last comment.

I agree that it does lose to the up-back tactic, but it’s definitely not useless. I like to use it by comboing a tri-dashed j.L to the cr.L. By the point the second hit combos, and because I’m coming in FROM the air, people often aren’t thinking about up-back. Plus, you can do it empty, stopping before or after the cr.L if you know they’re going to try it, and jump with them. Maybe I’ve gotten sloppy, though, since a lot of the time I have Doom missiles covering my approach.

As for the M Strike/fly air reset, it’s really not that tough. Here are a few timing pointers to get it:

  1. Attack as early as possible in the super-jump that won’t send you flying completely over your opponent.
  2. Attack quickly and input the Strike motion at the highest point in the jump.
  3. Since Thor kind of drops below the screen, learn the timing (I use the sound) of when you can input the fly command. It’s earlier than you think.
  4. Pause for an instant as they recover to let fly fully activate.
  5. Let the air dash auto-correct.
  6. For M grab, grab when they’re just barely above your head. For H grab (my preference), grab just AFTER they fall even with you. This requires tactical patience, since you have to let the dash run a bit long and it feels like you’re going to miss them.

Hope that helps somewhat.

Man Mike Ross is playing sent storm Thor now. I already get confused online all day for that guy, and now he’s playing my new team. Ah well…

That team is pretty boss no wonder he switched. Storm dhc to tho is too good.

lol poor FMR, you guy recording any of your matches ? I am curious on to how you play them.

Two things:

  1. Magneto is the worst matchup of Thor to me. You can’t have the same mobility due to a lot of attacks that can hit you at a distance if you press buttons, he can zone out, he can rush down. Really hands down my most hated matchup.

  2. I’ve heard mighty strike is projectile invincible, although never explored it. Do you have to be fully charged? What’s the condition to be projectile invincible during mighty strike?

Also, if I want to discuss strategies or Thor’s gimmicks which thread should I aim at? Just migrated from eventhubs, but the forums there are dead… :frowning:

Wanna post my Thor punish bait DHC.

magneto is a pain in the ass for everyone not just thor, he’s arguably the best character in the game.

And yes mighty strike goes through all projectiles aslong as its not a hyper. You dont have to be charged but you can still get hit with projectiles on its start up ofcourse. The fully charges MS has armor.

You can post wherever rly, most of the ppl just post here http://shoryuken.com/f382/feel-heavens-wrath-thor-thread-reloaded-263957/

Yeah Maggie is a pain but if Thor touches him once you can pretty much kill him if you have the appropiate set up.

The best thing to do is stay mobile and on top of him, especially in the air and bait out M.Shockwaves if possible, also get a get off me assist like tron or something (who is on my Thor team).

If he has Sentinel you definantly want to stay in the air, he will use his Drones to cross you up and it’s very difficult to block his mixups if yoru caught in between. SJ square jump H is a good way to get around in the air. It’s lame but Magneto is too good to just go toe to toe on the ground. Your better off getting a nice hit confirm while avoiding unecessary damageand killing the bastard.

When dealing with characters like Magneto, Zero, Dante, and Ammy, nothing is lame and anything you can do to win regardless of how cheap is all fair. Blame Capcom for that not yourself hehehe.

Just saw the Thor movie with my girlfriend on our 2 year anniversary. Awesome.

Yah Thor movie was pimp

i did admitedly want to see more of arrogant thor just dominating foos left and right though

it was good, could’ve been much better! I bet he’ll wreck house in the avengers movie! Man I love comics. So much to nerd out about.
