If it had just a bit more hit stun or he has less recovery on the freeze slasher he’d have some nice extended combos. I know it seems silly to judge a character when they’ve literally only been available to the masses for a couple hours, but I think it’s pretty obvious.
His normals are pretty slow and not very good, his special moves range from interesting to mediocre at best, and his combo and damage output seem below average. He also has well below average health and his only reversal/wake up option seems to be ex mega uppercut.
Now compare that to the street fighter characters who typically have good normals and strong special moves. Or compare that to the Tekken characters that have extremely strong high/low mixups.
For all I know I could be totally wrong and people will find a way to make Mega Man a viable character, but just on paper he doesn’t sound bad, he sounds unplayable.
It’s not just him either, I tried to make Cole work for a while too and he suffers from a lot of the same problems that Mega Man does. And let’s not even get started on the cats. So what’s the deal Capcom, we get exclusive characters that are all unplayable?
You can combo standing far MK from the EX Freeze mid-screen, but you need to have started kind of close in the first place.
Cr.MP, standing HK, and basically all of his far normals (even though they look the same as his close normals) aren’t special/super cancel-able. Which is really sad, because (LP xx cr.MP) is the only Link that I can find with Mega Man.
I’m almost certain I did that (j.mp, j.hk) trial mid-screen. Hit the jumping opponent when I was close to landing.
Mega Uppercut, cr.LP, pause, MK, HP, Mega Cannon. It can be done mid-screen and does like 1/2 life for 2 meters. But…it starts with a uppercut…which isn’t really what you want to be doing (except maybe on wake-up if it is any good?).
Well I’ve been messing around with some friends and so far I’ve just played him like a ghetto Ryu. Walk speed is bad.His slide is ok, and his cross up j.mk looks kinda wonky but actually works out pretty well. Personally I find him to be a lot of fun, and I think his crouching fierce punch is a pretty decent move and has actually stuffed a few attacks. His lightning seems like a decent anti air but seems to suffer from only being shootable off of a neutral jump. It’d be awesome if I could tiger knee the lightning as well, but sadly you cant. And his standing round house is definitely mediocre at best. I’ve been hit out of it so many times that it’s not even funny.
I’ve been playing Mega Man as a turtle character for the most part. I really wish they would change the height restriction on his Thunder Beam/make it TK-able.
I’m guess there’s such a big height restriction since otherwise he’d probably have the perfect zoning projectile if you could do it at almost TK heights (down shot covers in front, horizontal shot blocking jump or even walking forward approaches if done low enough, and vertical shot for attempted cross ups/wall jumps/dives).
That actually makes a lot of since, I wish he just have more comboability off the ice slash and it would make a big difference. Of course then he’d actually need to have normals that are special cancelable as well. Maybe with some better range too to make it all connect. Yeah I dunno about this guys.
I’ve been messing for him for a few hours, I wasnt able to come up with anything amazing in training mode because it just seems his EX moves aren’t worth it. The best BNB(mid-screen, meterless) I could find was j.hk, s.hp, uppercut, c.lk, uppercut. It does around 380 damage which is decent but I actually couldn’t do more than that even with using 1 bar.
The frame advantage on his uppercut is great, it gives you a lot of time to setup a thunderbeam or ice slasher on wakeup(both easily avoided with rolling)
I think he will be mostly a battery character due to his range, setups and the fact that he honestly doesnt really have a good reason to spend meter.
That’s a pretty good analysis of the character. Maximilian said the same thing in his first impressions video of the character. His primary function seems to be a battery.
i had top comment on max’s impressions for megaman and this is what i put
***He isnt a joke character, the dude is just hard to crack open like Doom was in Vanilla mvc3.***
******
***He has some insane corner combos and those HUGE Damage with Pandora. Just give the character some time…***
Same as Pac-Man, He has a charge up Rushdown move if completly charged it does a wall bounce, his projectile is pretty safe, has a safe anti air, and has a flash kick that can easily be comboed into.***

Mega Man’s thundershock might not be his best use for Air attacks but it does stop opponents from coming in. His Mega Upper can be combo into what ever u want(if youre fast enough).***

Mega Man’s slide is like of Rolentos where u can finish off juggles with it, and his air attacks on counter hit give a somewhat float ability

Pac Man also has a REALLY SAFE CR.HK which is really rare to find in most fighters his J.HP does a ground bounce and after the heavy and EX versions of flip kick he is safe from mid and high normals
I’ll try more stuff later. I think I’m going to main him. he feels right to me so im gonna run with it.
Im having trouble finding synergy with him and ryu tho.

yeah. The bnb above and even without the super but just a regular shot does much more. I haven’t done trials yet so we’ll see. I was hoping to take some stuff from trials and apply it to training mode to find a better bnb. Thx for the compliment.
