you don’t lose out big time because they are still blocking and you are still applying offensive pressure, so you are still at the advantage, especially in such a mix up heavy game.
I honestly don’t give a fuck if I do that and people block it , especially if I have parasoul on point with copter backing her up. i see it that there’s an 80% chance I will open them up due to how strong the mixup opportunity is of me being close and them blocking, and you can keep the pressure pretty much always going if you know how.
I agree with everything said.in the past two posts. Literally dont care of they don’t mash when I have para and they’re in the corner. there is no way to escape the unlimited free pressure unless I Fuck up lol
i dont see how you are applying pressure if you are also blocking… but maybe thats just me. i also dont see how you are applying pressure while your blocking and they used chicken guard as there defense. you let them out by playing a non aggressive offense. i dont think you can apply pressure while blocking yourself unless you are calling assist and then the assist just gets supered… if you block at point blank and the opponent tries to counter tech, you get thrown. only thing i could really think of would be forward jumping at the reset spot while blocking… lol idk sounds suspect, anything you do that is inactive has a mashable counter. and im still not seeing how being on the ground while in crouch block is you applying pressure.
But there are so many ways to make the safe, educated guess, such as basing it off of patterns hey have displayed or listening to buttons.
There are also a quite a few strategies to cover a lot of those options if you have proper team synergy. For example, if they jump back, I can call jump forward while calling cerecopter, keeping up pressure.
It is also something that, if you do it right and not regularly, should be unexpected, making it hard for them to react to (covering most of the ground options), and you are only blocking for a split second before resuming pressure.
Also keep in mind, my character that use for this sort of pressure is Parasoul, who has many options of covering and resuming pressure if you do decide to interrupt.
I do this stuff on a lot of different people, and RARELY come out on bottom because of it, and when I do, its usually because I fucked up my execution. I mean, its also not something that I am doing constantly, but in very suspect spots where I think they are pushing buttons, which as a player, is one of my strong points years of playing ST Honda, who uses such tactics to make the most out of some matchups.
I think the problem is that a lot of people define “mashing” in different ways
Depending on who you ask, mashing can mean:
-Playing completely randomly and just sweeping your hand over the controller/stick
-Doing a legit read into counter but not bothering with timing or execution due to panic (examples would be mashing the dp motion/throw tech 15 times while in block stun hoping to get it right, or just holding up in a panic whenever a tri jumper gets in on you)
-Taking gimmicky risks with little thought(“random” super and whatnot)
-In general playing without strategy
-In general letting yourself get panicked, or letting your own instincts and fears dominate you.
According to the dictionary definition of metagame the way I’m using it is completely acceptable due to the broad nature of the term. Any strategic area in a game influenced by factors outside the game. Now leave it alone good god
Today in my money matches I stopped combos and did nothing. Sadly, the opponent was crouch blocking when I did that… so I threw after what seemed like an eternity of staring each other down.
I don’t think it’s the word that’s bothering people so much as the connotation that comes with using it. We’re already trying to become an accepted community, throwing around terms improperly (whether or not you were right isn’t at question here) is something that a lot of people are defensive over, as we want to be taken seriously (at least moreso than Smash).
I do enjoy where the highest level strategies are now though; the “mashing” takes the timing out of a lot of things, adding a ton of levels of yomi.
I’m amused at how Smash is knocked around so much in this thread. The funny thing is that Smash players generally don’t sit around and argue about what “meta-game” is. We just talk about in-game elements as well as out-of-game elements, and if someone throws out the word “meta-game” it’s all taken in stride.
If one feels the need to ‘call someone out’ on their lack of knowledge - such as the (mis)use of the term meta-game - one will also have the responsibility of including the ‘correct’ information. If such data is not included, then the post is no more than an empty complaint and as such should be ignored.
As for my personal opinion on the original post,
I wouldn’t call them a ‘huge part’ in the overall strategy of high level play. I would simply say that they are options to be used at the player’s discretion, and that these options will be present whether or not the player decides to mash buttons in order to deploy them. In the end it only matters if it was the correct choice or not.
Mashing tag, mashing throw, and mashing super are all slightly worse in SG then they were in MvC2…mashing throw is actually much worse, since you won’t get a cancellable normal if you miss. Iin time everyone good will stop mashing tag as they flat-out DIE or get air reset, and when people reach the level of commonly resetting with an assist call and blocking, mashing normals will also decline. Feel free to discuss what’s developed in the first month till then, though.
I did flame Ata because it was the first time I had ever played the guy and watching him play everyone else at Next Level it just seemed to be what he did. It just rubbed me the wrong way because to me it was a sign of disrespect but that’s because my background came from CvS2 and Melty, which have obnoxiously good anti mashing strategies.
After talking to him and continuing to play the game, against him and everyone else I found that it’s got nothing to do with disrespect and everything to do with being an option for you on the receiving end. Hell, the matches with him were it annoyed so much were actually against Omni who he plays with constantly. I know that feeling all too well. The more I play the more ‘resets’ I try to memorize and store away to recall later but you best believe if I’m getting hit or blocking with anyone on my team I will be ready to counteract, even if it looks like it came out of nowhere.
The mashing of normals aren’t a problem, but the mashing of throws does bother me a bit. Ah well, I try and catch on quickly.
I’m assuming this was the reason for the choice to make LP+LK throw instead of F/B+Fierce? Sorry if it’s been askd before, but I can’t read EVERYTHING you post.
