The Makoto Match Critique Thread!

max range of sa2 combo is character specific and generally the bigger the character the further you can combo into it.

I would suggest you put that mixup away for the most part as it served no purpose in that situation. Maybe if st fpxxex hayate would not quite stun then one might consider that option or double grab.

I posted this in the Online Edition video thread, but I might as well post it here to get some critique as well. What do you guys think? I know I dropped some combos after some parries. After the red parry I probably should have done s.hpXXex hayate. Don’t know why I did sweep.

Seems decent, but I noticed a few things-

  1. At the end of the round 1, you got a grab after a reset in the corner. Yang was pretty much dead. You did a s.hp EX Hayate followup. A s.hp HP Hayate followup would have killed him and saved meter for Seichuusen in the next round.
  2. You should probably tick grab more. I saw you dash in and go s.mp, s.lp kara EX oroshi- but he was high blocking. Try s.mp -> karakusa in that situation (Yang is small so you may need to move forward slightly before grabbing).
  3. Vary your c.mp pokes, it’s a mid and good players will parry it. Your range on it seemed good (you weren’t doing it too close), but try dashing closer sometimes (not jumping) and using c.lk, hayate. (Remember, you can c.lk, hayate, karakusa) c.mp, hayate is two high parries and I’ve had good players on Supercade and from my town parry both hits and super. c.lk is a low and a high.
  4. Watch your sweep especially vs good players who parry low very well or punish 100%. Don’t just dash in, sweep like the beginning of round 2. You will get parried or low blocked and that move has tons of recovery. On block Ken and Chun can super, they don’t even have to parry. Try using it to end a string instead- simplest one is just c.mk, c.hp. This works well vs tatsumaki spammers as the c.mk cleanly stuffs ground hurricanes, resets them, and you’re at good range to hit with c.hp if they don’t block low. A fancier string is (close range) s.mp, s.lk xx hayate fake, c.mk, c.hp (see http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZOz5nA_W7jk @ 2:05 for this pressure string)
  5. Jump less, dash more, even if just to dash and block to bait a reversal.
  6. Nice SA1 link at 0:41

This yang looks to be absolutely terrible though, I dont think I saw a single divekick the entire match, his spacing is exceedingly poor. It might help you improve more to have us critique matches vs better players.

EDIT: addition-

He’s right, you could have slapped and done SA2 with HK and it would have comboed, vs tall characters they can be right underneath the timer like that and it will combo, try it.

Cool! Thanks a lot for the advice. Really helpful stuff. And you’re right. He wasn’t a very good Yang, so I sort of messed around. The next time I fight someone I think is good I’ll save the replay and upload it.

Additional stuff

Be careful when combo’ing into sa1 near the corner vs the twins they get up before you recover from the super and can super/cr fwd you.

You also need to work on your execution a little bit. You missed the s strong->short link when you did the st->shortxex orochi and you were late with your jab hayate when you hit him with cr shortxhayate in the corner in the first round causing it to whiff.

Post knockdown you also seem to cr shortxhayate everytime you fient cr jab
