Sagat is hell don’t get me wrong, but the Geif fight can definitely be brought down to 6-4. You’ve got the tools to stop him you just have to fight him very close. I know the horrors of the match and I know where your coming from and I can understand when the match is considered to be 7-3, but honestly until you slip up, fei can keep him at bay. And with a bit of luck ex chicken can get you out of a jam, although a smart gief won’t allow it.
I’m just saying it’s one of those “HE PICKED GIEF IM FUCKED I GIVE UP” matches for a lot of Fei players but every time I fight a gief I get so into it and enjoy taking him down. I’ve timed out geif a lot too.
And yea good i know you don’t MEAN 9-1:) but I just think its an overestimated fight.
This is a horrible fight… 9-1 end of story. Because of the damage situation, it takes way to many hits to win this fight. and because of the throw range on SPD etc, every poke becomes a risky poke. C.MK always gets eaten, as does C.FP. Anti-Air flame kick usually trades. This fight is really bleak, against a good gief. Blanka and Gief imo are the two worst.
It’s not 9-1 but it’s not 6-4 either. Somewhere between would be most accurate.
Gief fight blows because Fei’s sweet spot is Gief’s, only moreso. Fighting face to face with a decent Gief is asking for it. You basically have to bait mistakes and poke your way for the rest of the round. It’s not unwinnable – it’s just uncomfortable. I fought one earlier today and won just by sitting back and hitting linked cr.MP > cr.MPs, cr.HP, and hitting rekkas on the last spin of lariat. It took forever and it was annoying as shit, but that’s how it went.
Sagat fight is fucked from the start because it’s prohibitively difficult to get in, and even if you do, Sagat outprioritises everything you’ve got. Focus is useless, rekkas are useless, CW is useless, pokes are useless. At a distance, you may as well just lay down because you’re dead meat. The numbers might read the same between Gief-Fei and Sagat-Fei but Sagat-Fei is the harder fight.
Gief-Fei will be easier because of the lariat nerf, and Sagat-Fei will probably still be the same bullshit despite the nerfs.
IMO Geif is probably 6 - 4 and Sagat is 6.5 - 3.5.
Fei CAN beat Zangeif, as said before he just has to play different. It’s easier on Geifs part though as he gets about 985849 mistakes where as Fei gets 1 at the most so, you better be on point. Vs Sagat you have to be SO into the match, so ontop of everything, react to EVERY little thing. Yes its winnable. No it’s not easy. And even if you play right, he can STILL random you out and there is nothing you can do about it. Fei has no come back potential and Sagat has all of it while also doing more damage, having a more dominant gameplan, and having more health. This fight is stacked for sure. But, it’s winnable. Not easy but Fei isn’t dead at character select either like Geif vs Sagat / Seth.
But why do I have the feeling that if Seth where to say use a jumping stretching punch and hit Fei Long while in counter that Seth’s arms would just go back to him and he would be safe?
Zangief pretty much relies on two ways to approach: jump in and green hand.
Green hand can be punished. But if he goes for a jump in, you’ll have to prey your anti-air works. Not to mention the empty jumps.
Getting knocked down is the only fucked-up part in this match up. It makes the match up at least a 6-4 in Zangief’s favor along with the fact that nothing is safe against that mutherfacko. (We all know FeiLOong’s best move is his FA, but using it will mostly result in a SPD or a knock down.)
If you can’t react to his jump ins every time (most casual players like me), the match up will become more biased depending on your anti-air reaction. And I’m not talking about playing a pro. I’m only talking about a Zangief with similar skill and match up knowledge as you.
i don’t think I need to go into the sagat match up anymore.
You forget that Giefs normals are top tier. Giefs weakness is that he’s really big and kinda slow which only a few characters like Sagat, Akuma and Seth can exploit.
Absolutely. I can’t beat Gief… at all. Granted i’ve only been playing Fei for a bit now, but Gief just seems like an impossible fight. Someone said fight him up close? Really? He seems to out prioritize everything i can throw at him, and an up close fight seems like it would be asking for a quick death, the only way i can kind of hang in there is by staying away as much as possible and looking for opportunities to punish mistakes… Sooner or later tho he seems to close in, and once that happens especially after a knock down its all over. To me Fei doesn’t really have the tools to 1) keep him out and 2) Do enough damage when he gets a chance to really make head way in this match, unless the Gief makes alot of mistakes. I’m still learning Fei, i’m hoping that i’m just missing something in this match up.
While I’ve never played any GREAT giefs,
here’s my mostly OBVIOUS advice:
Geif has trouble against nj.HK.
use HK to beat Geifs Jump Fierce and RH ( I think)
Flame kick for jump MK. (I reccomend blocking it cause its tough to time it)
space with cr.HP, HP, cr.MP,cr.MK. (DUH)
Also if it’s a “teeter back and forth at mid range” geif you can get away with rekkas as he walks forward but for the sit and block geifs… just get a life lead and wait as long as you have to. Hope your reactions are on par… just like with the Sagat matchup and Blanka. IMO that’s what makes those 3 matches so hard. You have to REACT or die.
has capcom fixed the Tenshin st.HP bug? not sure if its a bug but i been missing my full damage from HK and EX Flame Kicks since Tenshin puts me at random distances sometimes hopefully they didnt fix the bug with Rog where he does his ultra and you can duck under him without taking damage
So why exactly are people calling Makoto Fei Long’s spiritual successor? I personally don’t want “another” Fei Long. I want MY Fei Long Capcom! All we need is more damage on rekkas. That is IT. If you have trouble linking into rekkas then you aren’t doing it right. What kills Fei is the fact that his combos do NO damage! Why should Fei have to do 2 or 3 rekkas combos to equal another character’s BnB?
Kick up the damage on the rekkas and I won’t mind if they remain the same frame wise. Fingers crossed.
So who is sticking with Fei come SSF4 and who’s abandoning ship?
Rekka damage isn’t a problem at all… and on top of that it’s almost always free corner pressure if you hit 3 rekkas…
Fei’s damage isn’t that bad at all. close Fierce to EX flame kick is like 350(2 hit EX BnB), and on certain characters you can FADC medium flame kick into heavy chicken wing, that total combo does 412 I think.
Rekka isn’t really his problem, I think if they were one frame safer it would almost break Fei. Chickenwing is the move that brings him down at the moment, but you change that by one frame and you have the infinite combos coming back. I’ve heard it hit’s a bit lower, that may help if it’s true, cause you could use medium chicken wing for pressure and not fear it flying over your opponent and exposing you. Armor break on all three chickenwing hits may help but I don’t think that’s happening. Another thing I’ve heard is that it flies faster and is a bit more invincible, maybe it will give him more options for getting in on fireball characters. We’ll just have to see.
Makoto is on my radar and yes I would rathe rplay a better Fei, but I’ll expand my horizons. SF4 is the first game I’ve really put time into and gone to tourneys/casuals and for SSF4 I’m going to look at all my options, and there are 10 more to look at after I see Fei’s changes. I may even go back to viper.
giving rekka more damage wont do much if he cant first link it reliably. Im still sticking with Fei but i highly doubt hes getting much changes. Im just hoping the nerfs on the big dogs helped.
I’ll still play him for sure, the character always has his merits. I’ve leveled up with him a lot THIS week actually thanks to some training sessions. He’s got his weaknesses but I think the system buffs will actually help him. He’s a scary mother fucker in close.
But, I may also be adding more characters to my list. Right now I’m only good with Fei, Seth, and Cammy but Juri Dudley Ibuki and Guy all look very appealing at this moment in time. If Juri really is a combo of Fei and Cammy, I’ve got a lot to look forward to as I really like both their playstyles.
