The "Make Fei Long competitive" thread

You know… it’s not even that. It’s just the stuff they give him to work with is sub par. They could make cr.MP special cancelable and he’s still bruce. Chicken Wing could be overhead and he’s still bruce. Comboing off his overhead… yep still bruce. Flame kick juggles until ultra and… well actually he’s even more bruce then.

Not to mention if they want to give him new moves, there’s plenty of movies and footage to pull from. Tekken has Law and he’s S tier and is the damn near spitting image of Bruce Lee… it’s just that Namco gave him good options.

They just simply need to buff the character. More damage, better safety, more options. I was playing ST today Fei vs Honda thinking why Fei just kinda sucks and really it’s just all in how effective his moves are. Honda can fly into me head first repeatedly and yet all the moves in my arsenal really didn’t have an answer for it. Some guy can do ONE MOVE and win while I have to use my entire arsenal and really really think just to beat that one move. Something is wrong there. Fei just needs something strong to fall back on… but it seems like playing a good Fei means using EVERYTHING to it’s fullest potential at the exact right time where each move has an application. He needs something strong and character defining… something I think the character kind of lacks.

Ask yourself, what does Fei really do well? I can’t actually think of anything. Nothing stands out as really being that strong of a point that he can hold over other characters.

It would be interesting if Fei Long’s U2 has no startup. I can imagine him being able to counter ultras. If someone does a ultra, Fei can theoretically spam U2 during the animation and basically destroy non-projectile ultras.

Capcom just seems to think Fei just should work 10X’s harder then the rest of the cast, its been the very reason he has remained nearly bottom tier in every gaming iteration.

He has the best overhead in the game, lol thats it ahahah

In SF4, I think so, but with the inclusion of the 3S characters, I don’t think his overhead will still be considered the best in the game.

His overhead is fast and it jumps over low attacks, think only dudley out of the 3S characters has an overhead, hmm well the damage potential is greater on dudley since he can super cancel for 40% hp.

All 3 of the 3S chars have overheads, makoto is a special move,of which the EX version had 12 frames of startup in sf3, and knocks down, and is speculated to have invinciblity, and can be even comboed into, or mixup-ed into( cr.lk xx orishi).Ibuki has a command normal overhead of which i know nothing about, and Dudley…OH BOY…His overhead seems like it is the fastest in the game, gives frame advantage(maybe cr.jab after?).If super has 3 or more frames of startup it means you can combo at least jab after overhead.It is UNGODLY fast.Seriously, when i first watched the vid and saw it, i was like WTF is with that jab.So fast…

a1) most characters can already do that: to my knowledge there isn’t an ultra in the game that sagat can’t beat clean with his own, apart from projectile stuff and shit like gief’s ultra

b2) who the hell throws out an ultra unless they’re a) desperate or b) stupid

a strong hint from the dev blogs “you must aim to be the no.1 fei” could mean:
fei will still have strict timing on links and must use all tools to be effective…

they intend to make him hard.

Fei Long has more popularity in SSFIV thx to the 3rd Striker’s trailers. Too bad it is negative popularity though.

Fei Long’s ultra holds him back and they give him counter ultra. Well have fun Fei players I don’t expect much.

I mean he is still kinda a decent character but hes just lack compare to other. He’s kinda like Guile.

I think you’re reading into it too much. That’s just the japanese “do your best!” shit that they put after everything.

so i thought about it and maybe we can get ultra 1 off command grab in super. seth had said that we could before sf4 came out and we couldnt, and then you get a dev saying that they fixed the startup of the super. i think there was a mistranslation or the dev mis spoke, because there is nothing wrong with fei’s super. its actually top 5 supers in the game.

im curious as to how they would do it though. either command grab has more +frames on hit, or startup on ultra would have to get down to 7. which would be sweet cuz you could link it from a close standing mp, or counterhit crouching mp, in theory of course

Fei Long can’t combo into his overhead. So what’s the point of having it be so good? that’s just some bullshit. Fei long ultra II is bullshit.

Neither of these options lead to big damage, and your bread and butter combo with 1 frame links, and whiffs on half the cast unless you do an even hard 1 frame link barely breaks 200 damage, if that. if cr.mp is a counter hit you can get an okay combo into rekkas for your work. Good Job friend, you have to look for a counter hit for more mediocre damage.

Also@ People saying that Ultra II negates charge characters like Honda…

Why the fuck do we need to negate Honda? You all realize you get free HP rekkas on blocked headbutt, (use the EX version for EX headbutts), right? Jumping Roundhouse already beats all of Honda’s air options. Honda is one of the few matchups Fei Long has advantage in.

Why the fuck should we get a tool that only works in our advantageous matchups already? How does that make sense. Hey Fei Long. I heard you’re terrible, take some more tools that only work on the cast that you beat and still get bent over by the actually good characters in the game.

Every application Ultra II has, Fei Long already has an answer for (just less damage.) So It’s not really helping anything.

if Fei Can ultra 1 out of Tenshin, cool. But that doesn’t solve the problem either, because once you get ultra, good players will be looking for tenshin, and no matter how you setup, tenshin auto-loses to DP FADC Ultra… Something the higher tier characters are pretty good at doing.

After looking at Makoto’s capabilities, why would anyone ever want to pick Fei Long over Makoto?

Fei long’s Dragon Punch is ass, and I’d totally trade that for, better dashes, good cancellable normals, and a 5 frame command grab that combos into ultra.

I can link consistantly offline in matches and training mode but alas theres no scene near me and I’m stuck in the limbo that is “Too good for my friends”. Which means 99% of my matches are online where anything but a throw after RH/EX CW results in ANOTHER mashed out DP to the face. oh well…

At least picking Dan and baiting DPs with taunt 9 on knockdown is still proving to be amazingly therapeutic. :lol:

Yeah most characters get rewarded much more for 1-2 frame links than Fei does. I hope st.LP will hit all crouchers now. It’s such a good move but… doesn’t work on most of the cast consistently.

Capcom at one point wanted to kill off Fei Long and retcon him. They even had an official Fei Long comic book that basically said he died 20 years before the game starts. That way the could never have to bring him back up again.
