Fei feels half finished to me – the fact that they had to patch the game after release to fix Fei specifically was a bit of a giveaway in that respect. There are still a bunch of dumb things about him though: his fucked up lk CW crossup, his whiffing jab, his whiffed ultras/rekkas after hit, the fact that his ultra won’t juggle even though it’s clearly meant to, etc… Even just fixing that stuff would go a long way to making Fei a better character, but if everyone’s trying to draw parity with the top characters in terms of balance in SSF4, he’d need more. Without anything extra he’d probably become a bottom middle tier character rather than a high bottom tier character… which isn’t ideal if EVERYONE is getting buffs because he’d probably just fall back into being high bottom with just as many, if not more bad matchups.
I seriously don’t think that anything I posted earlier is broken. I wouldn’t mind hearing why they are, because I thought about it with Ryu in mind. Not to make Fei Long into Ryu, but to give him just as many (very different) tools.
Not trying to sound dickish or anything, I’m just curious, since everything I posted has been based on my experiences with Fei since day 1 (and stuff from HDR, ST and so on).
Eugene says that because he already wins with him, but that’s like a Vega player saying vega is fine because they can get wins with him consistently. It could be Fei seems fine because you’re better than the competition around you. I think you can’t get a good grasp on Fei’s ranking till you play other top players. I mean yes, Fei can win but he also has to work way harder than some of the other top characters atm to get those wins. All we want is for him to be on that same level.
If I went by my results online, I’d think Fei was broke, but in playing other really good players, I can see he still lacks a bit in his tools. I’m not even sure why you guys want EX rekkas to armor break. As is now, we don’t even use EX rekkas for anything. Chicken Wing is fine as an up block armor breaker but having all the hits break would be excellent and keep with the theme of multi hitting armor break moves having all hits break armor.
Fei just needs more reliable ways to do damage and a more reliable means of getting in. Chicken Wing would be a good tool for that if they fixed the problems with it as is right now. As someone else said, other characters are being brought up too and if he remained where he is, he definitely wouldn’t keep up.
My biggest wants are a comboing ultra, safer rekkas, a faster walk speed, and improvements to chicken wing, on top of a buff to his damage. A lot of the other stuff suggested was stuff that would help improve his character, but these I feel are seriously needed for him to compete at the top level.
They can only focus rekka if you hit them after they’ve charged it for a sec. If they focus in response to rekka you can just follow up the hit and break focus.
You can CW using MK up close on reaction to focus pretty reliably. In close HK / EX flame kick usually handles it.
cr.MP is too fast to focus. cr.LP rekkas can’t be focused.
Only things I can think of that are really focus bait are like…overhead and cr.HP.
Most people don’t use EX rekkas in a match just randomly and if you knew they were going to focus why not use HK CW and get a free combo?
If they’re doing it at CW only hitting once range you can just stand outside of their range and wait for them to cancel it or let it go, either way you can punish with HP rekkas.

His new ultra should be more practical, easier to combo into for full damage, even if it does a little less damage.
And, just for me, make him say something besides “I Looooost” when I lose, my wife razzes me about it lol. How about something like “I almost won but my wife wouldn’t stfu”
EX rekkas need to be changed but I don’t think armour break fits. It’s more suited to CW. I’d much prefer EX rekkas gaining super armour status, and if they’re gonna go hog wild with the wall bounce mechanic (doubt it though), there’s your move.
CW > s.HP is fine. If you can’t land it go for c.lp instead, it’s easier and safer – though not as damaging. Are you plinking the input?
Don’t mind the recovery on the command throw – I’d prefer a decent startup instead of the retarded backwards logic’d one it has.
Agreed on flame kick, but then Fei’s always had a shitty DP. If nothing else they need to remove the hop at the end. I’m sick of focus cancelling every flame kick I land whether it’s blocked or not just because I’m petrified of being smacked for it during recovery.
On the ultra… seriously, go into training mode, pick Fei, pick Honda as your opponent and go for the following:
MK flamekick xx focus cancel, HK.CW, ultra
You can insert whatever you like before the flamekick (jump in, s.HP, or maybe CW > s.HP, or whatever) too. It’s a solid string and it’s not hard. If it landed on everyone like it lands on Honda, it’d be fine. As it is, though, it’s shitty. They just need to a) tweak the hitboxes so that they stretch all the way to the floor and pick up the juggle hits more reliably or b) change it so that the opponent is launched sufficiently on the first hit so that the other two are guaranteed. Either way is fine.
And you should change his voiceset to Japanese. Not sure what he says but it’s not “I lost”. I’m sure it’s even more obnoxious but at least I can’t understand it.
Well, you made some good points, especially on the Rekka. But, I will say that I still think that the Ultra should be easier to fully land without FA. Even with a perfect FADC from flame kick you only get 3 hits, for about 15-20pct damage. IMHO, its not worth the trouble or the meter. And maybe the CW should be cancellable into s.HP. I mean, it is a VERY strict timing, and the only reason I like it that is a good way to get your Rekkas safely. And as far as the voice goes, I started setting it in JP, and now she knows when I lose in Japanese lol…maybe that is an issue of me losing so much, and Capcom can’t do much about it…
But seriously they are going to retool alot of characters so that means everyone is getting an ajustment so they can’t leave him the same or he will get left behind.
Ryu/Rufus/Sagat can combo into Ultra why not everyone else, I am sure they can fix it that way its not like Fei’s does so much more that they need to make it harder to land.
Just did some testing for you, because I couldn’t remember the specifics.
I’ll rank these in terms of damage.
j.HK into ultra does 496 damage.
Raw ultra does 495.
lv.3 focus into ultra does 491.
The combo I posted does 480.
If you want to be really fancy, j.HK, cl.HP xx FK… does 553 – but I wouldn’t bother since you could just hit j.HK ultra in that case.
The question you need to ask is, which is the most likely to come out? j.HK is unlikely against anyone decent, raw ultra would only ever happen when punishing startup/recovery, focus into ultra speaks for itself.
The combo that hits Honda right now can work from the following setups:
Any strength FK, though MK is best for damage
From a MK crossup into cl.HP xx FK
Ambiguous LK crossup into a light string where you link to st.LP or cr.LP and cancel into FK from there (like you would a rekka string
Overhead on CH into cr.lp xx FK
HK or EX CW into either cl.HP or cr. LP
…and I’m sure there are more. So if I have to sacrifice under 20 damage and half my bar for what amounts to a ton of setups, I’ll take it. We’re talking enough setups to rival Ryu, here. They might not be as easy, but then comparing difficulty of execution to Ryu is a retarded argument anyway.
edit: Not to mention you can hit confirm it. Just go with a mixup instead of the full string after the cancelled FK if they block. It’s safe as hell.
1 frame links are really common. cl.HP has 4 frames of startup which fit into hk.CW’s stun frames. cr.lp has 3 frames of startup. Either you plink cl.HP to turn the 1 frame into 2, or you go with the native 2 frame link. Either way it’s reasonably easy once you practice it enough.
I’m assuming you’re salty about DP mashers. It’ll happen, but then it happens with anyone with 1 frame links, and there isn’t a character in the game that doesn’t have one. I would suggest hitting CW then baiting a DP instead of going for the combo all the time. When they realise you’re gonna block it, go for the combo then and hopefully they’ll get hit, or just block it which will allow you to hit confirm.
Rekka needs to juggle into itself. EX rekka needs to not be useless. Give it longer range, higher damage, armor, armor break, or juggle ablility. Anything to give it a usefull application.
EX Rekka being able to juggle would be awesome. Like Flame kick FADC chicken wing into EX rekkas. Or in the corner being able to get ultra after a rekka would be awesome. People are probably like WUT?! but think about it… rufus, ryu, sagat, and many others can do it after a special in the corner as well. Maybe put them on a higher arch after the last hit so it allows time for juggles or to get into oki position mid screen.
I don’t think that’s appropriate after a rekka. The difference being that Ryu, Sagat etc. use EX specials to juggle in the corner, most of which require your opponent to actually be in the corner, while a rekka from Fei Long can put you in the corner even if you weren’t near it.
