So I’m mixed about this card. On one hand, it would be unreasonable to load the new Emrakul with an arsenal similar to the old Emrakul. On the other hand, I can’t see this card being fun to draft into as it will be uncastable. Standard might think it’s an OK card.
Basically the only good thing about this new Emrakul is that it is nowhere near as broken as the first version, which I still regard as one of the worst cards in the entire game in terms of being overpowered in addition to being unfun.
(Ugh. At least three typos in that last post of mine? Fixed.)
Annihilator is such a poorly made ability that even half a decade later it still seems like one of those fake keywords you see in the crappier fan-made imaginary sets. It’s somewhat funny how it might actually be fair if it triggered only upon doing combat damage to an opponent, but such a huge advantage for just attacking is super dumb.
I like actually like the OG Eldrazi and annihilator. It technically does what it says it does: goes around rampaging like a pissed off Godzilla. They do present the same issue Ukyo has pointed out a bunch of times: those creatures are there to cheat them into play.
The new ones have that Nu Magic type of feel to it. That “I can’t make you feel too bad or somebody will get me DQed” type of feel. Probably means they fucked up with Ulamog since that dude is Mr Bad Feels. Old Names were way better too. Like, wtf is an Infinite Gyre? The Aeon’s thorn?
Crazy shit. Too bad I missed it when it first came out.
(Yeah, as far as actual cast-triggered abilities, new Ulamog beats the shit out of the other two despite having the smallest effect and abilities overall. Meanwhile, new Emrakul manages to outright screw over its own “epic” ability by giving the opponent another turn right after you Mindslaver them. What the hell is the point then?)
With regards to the “Infinite Gyre” title for original Ulamog, one of the people in the Gatherer comments for the original version of the card pointed out that it might be a reference to a poem by William B. Yeats apparently called “The Second Coming”:
You seem to forget that old Emrakul costs 15 mana. And I am with Pertho here, anihilator was super flavourful and cool ability, I miss it. Although, the “shuffle when hits graveyard”.
These are 10+ mana creatures. They are supposed to be doing something very powerful. I wonder what would be your take on a 15 mana “fair” creature ?
As for the new Emrakul, I’m still debating wether he is good or not. It has some interesting abilitites…
(I doubt new Emrakul will be good, just like how new Kozilek isn’t seeing any play, though I suppose at least new Emrakul has some form of protection.)
I’m not forgetting anything.
In fact, we’ve already been over this though when ukyo_rulz explained the problem with it: Emrakul’s actual mana-cost is unimportant when it’s basically always cheated out because of how stupid its abilities actually are. So there’s no point in rehashing that argument if you weren’t swayed by it the first time. That’s like saying Griselbrand isn’t stupidly broken because he has four Black mana symbols in his cost…even though none of the decks use him are mono-Black or ever get up to enough land to actually cast him legitimately.
With regards to what a “fair” version would be, that’s a rather loaded question: What’s “fair” to you? To me, “fair” would be something that doesn’t basically automatically the game against most decks just by hitting the table and can actually be interacted with or defended against by at least the majority of decks–original Emrakul fails both those “tests” hard.
