Jacob set the agenda for the Island for a long time. His premise was that mankind is capable of following a righteous path, if it was under the direction of a higher being. He believed mankind needed ‘faith in a higher purpose’ to stop society’s perchance for violence and war. That a common bond to ‘God’ was necessary. So Jacob allowed mankind to come to the island to prove this. The result however was an endless cycle of missery for those who came to the island. A dark cloud which needed to be removed.
1845 - Black Rock lands on the Island. That year is significant. The Enlightenment Movement was 100 years old and the start of the second Industrial Revolution was taking place. Science and reason were replacing faith and religion as the source of authority. Esau ( the man in black and the possessor of Locke’s body) isn’t keen on Jacob’s belief than mankind needs faith. Instead, Esau believes mankind needs science and reason. And he intends to prove it as well.
Esau allows man to used science to explore the properties of the island via the Dharma Initiative( Magna Hanso was on the Black Rock). Esau used Locke and Ben’s faith to kill Jacob. This releases the dark cloud over the island and opens it to the light. Hense the white backgound.
Fake Locke is none other than the smoke monster. The prods. have said that we’ve seen the smoke monster on and off the island in situations where we probably didn’t recognize it as the smoke monster. It’s pretty much given that it can impersonate people. That sounds exactly like Locke.
Damn finale was brilliant, I was expecting Jacob to be future Jack now I am totally lost, I’m starting to think this will be about aliens like the movie Knowing.
Hadn’t made that connection but think you are right.
That would make sense, this is paralled with Jack and Locke man of science and man of faith, but Locke manages to convince Jack in the end.
I don’t know about that Locke seemed pretty surprised once Ben revealed the discussion with his dead daughter.
I’m betting Jacob had planned for this scenario, doubt he will die.
Anyone remember the boat back in season 3 I think they found TNT, would I be correct to assume this is the same boat that we saw coming towards the Island at the begining?
Offtopic is the guy playing Jacob the same guy from Dexter?
Richard being in both times confuses me. Since he exists in both wouldn’t the present day Richard’s memory constantly be changing / updating as jack tried to change things? I need to rewatch this episode.
IMHO, this is why “what happened happened” has to be the correct theory regarding time travel. If future Richard is not privy to past Richard… then future Richard’s storline is ENTIRELY moot. In fact, ALL future segments ever aired on TV are obsolete & have become, at best, temporary placeholders for a newly revised plot.
The entire show - as understood by the audience - would be retcon’d. I just don’t see how the powers that be would do that… short of the very final episode. Why show us 50 yrs of story only to have it “changed/updated” (ie, destroyed) in the blink of an eye?? It might make for an epic conclusion to the entire series… but no way would they have done it as a S5/S6 cliff-hanger.
So yeah, future Richard HAS to know/remember everything we are just now seeing develop on TV. He has to have known all along, otherwise we’ve been tuning in for years to an irrelevant history that no longer exists.
This guy that got Ben kill Jacob do you think Richard came on the boat as his replacement.
Anyone else laugh out loud at Miles sudden realization, maybe it was the bomb that caused the incident, everyone at that point had a look of “Awwhhhh Shiiiii’”
How about I can’t stand Kate, man? And i’m pissed Sun and Jin didn’t hook back up. I was pulling for them like O.J. pulling for an appeal. All in all an awesome episode though.
Kate is just useless. Even when Jack’s character changed in S. 3 and he got all twiterpated over Juliet he wasn’t as useless as Kate is now.
S.1 Kate: cocks gun Let’s go.
S.2 Kate: I’m a whore.
S.3 Kate: I’m a HUGE whore.
S.4 Kate: I’m only in this show to annoy Jack. Sawyer just doesn’t care and neither should any of the viewers.
S.5 Kate: Are you serious? DO something besides intentionally sabotage common sense plans and then later try to “fix” things only to make it tragically worse!
She annoys me.
Anyway, I am so angry about Juliet. I have come to LOVE her character over the seasons. She is like the anti-Ben, in a sense, since initially we don’t know if she’s “good” or “bad.” She does so much betrayal, but it always ends up making sense later on but you’re still like “I don’t know…”
My favorite scene of the finale: The sub is submerging as it pulls away from the raft. You can see only a sliver of Juliet’s face on the right side of the camera and you just know she’s thinking ANOTHER chance to get off this island, and I’ve just given it up willfully… again. I’ve always loved that aspect of her character. Ben used the sub as so much bait for her, but it always ends up that way whether it’s Ben’s doing or not. She just can’t leave, poor girl.
Well, the actual ending of the book–the part after King warns you not to read on–that part is fine. It actually makes sense and fits into the context of Roland’s universe, even though the lack of closure is frustrating.
The bad part is like the 700 pages before that epilogue. And especially Roland’s confrontation with the Crimson King. That was the most stupid, deus-ex machina contrived plot device I’ve ever come across in my life.
I hope that Locke-Prime comes back to life. He’s the only character in the whole show who hasn’t had some measure of closure. He’s been screwed by fate, Ben, Bocaj/Esau, and his father. The man deserves something good to happen to him.
completely agree, when Sawyer was in the sub, he asks why the hell would jack want to blow up a hydrogen bomb, Kate’s response is “Doesn’t Matter!?”
Freckles is seriously unstable, couple with plenty of butt shots I don’t know wheather I want to tap that ass or cap it!
OFFTOP: D-side your av, I didn’t realize that was kens finger looked like he had his arm cut off like Oro.
I personally did not like Saeed in the later half of this season TBH.
Oh and seeing as he was military, wouldn’t he shoo 2 bullets into Kid Ben? I mean really?
Also I hated some of the clothings in the flashbacks; specially Saeed’s in Russia and Jacob’s visit to Illana.
SPEAKING OF WHICH: Who exactly are the people Saeed killed? Whitmore’s people? Doesn’t seem that way to me…
Who else liked that Ben finally got humiliated? That put a HUGE smile on my face. Now I may start to like the faggot.
Ben getting owned wasn’t that great considering the guy that owned him is an ancient spirit or something that had lots of prep time. Ben is still a beast!
juliete :lovin: I’ll miss that cool attitude and stoic look in her face.
I was referring to the lack of closure. The ending made sense, and honestly was the only one that could have happened. Howver, it still pissed me off right and good. The last three books honestly just felt contrived and poorly written compared to the first four. I guess he saw Death looking at his watch and decided he needed to force that shit out or it would never get done.
I’d actually just like to forget I ever read it after Wizard and Glass.
Locke has been a favorite character of mine for a while. The fact that we have (potentially) two versions of him now is going to make things interesting. Who’s to say that Jacob doesn’t come back as Locke too? Then you’d have two Locke’s trying to manipulate people and the survivors would have no clue which one was right. If you compare that to “science vs. faith”, then the symbolism gets pretty obvious.
The new LOST threadthe end begins Feb. 2nd! (SPOILERS imminent!)
Haha looks like Super SF4 made some of us forget about the final season of the show! Heck I only just recently checked Lostpedia to see when the premier is!
So feel free to throw in speculations and whatnot on what’s gonna happen in the final season of LOST!
