The Literature Thread (Yes, some of us still reed)

Anyone recommend a nice espionage or war book? So far the books I have read give off the “foreigners suck, USA #1” vibe.

I read Operation Mincemeat and it was a pretty good one. Plus its British and supposedly true

^^

comes to mind.

Catch-22. Possibly the best book on war you’ll ever read. Ever.

I finished “Into the Wild” ~ Jon Krakauer. Had to read it as a part of my summer assignment.

The book was nothing but filler. There’s plenty of random shit that the reader shouldn’t have to deal with. Everything pertaining to Chris McCandless’s life could’ve been condensed for a much better story.

I tried reading The Road a few days ago in B&N… Just couldn’t get into it honestly.

I need to catch up on some classics, anyone have any recommendations on which ones are not worth the time? My friend told me not to bother with Crime & Punishment [about five minutes after I bought it].

Crime and Punishment is good and it’s the one Dostoyevsky novel I finished.

The Road is a deep, dark journey into what may be no where, but it’s just so stark and beautiful the way McCarthy describes the world. The way grass disintegrates as he touches it while walking past. The way the kid has crazy toy nightmares causing trauma beyond that the world of humans is ending.

Finished Ender’s Game, it was really good, and that was easy reading. It was recommended to me that I should read the first sequel. I will asap.
Ender’s Game made me super logical while I was reading it, because I was totally into the games and the meta-games, and that made me want to be emotional to counter that in real life.

But now I’m into Snow Crash and in the first few chapters I’m blown away by the stuff he’s talking about, given it’s only 1992 when he published it.
Well thought out. Also I would not have guessed his job given:
He works for the mob, he drives a car, and he has two samurai swords.

Btw, I did read the Burning Chrome short story that someone on this forum linked (iirc) me to. Was good stuff. You can see where the thriller part of Neuromancer came from if he was writing in that style.

I love The Invisible Man. Though some good considerations are The Fountainhead (it’s an easier read than Atlas Shrugged though I didn’t like the characters as much), Tale of Two Cities, Dracula, or the Sound and the Fury.

The Resident Evil novels by S.D. Perry are a good read. I’ve finished Volumes 1, 3, 5, and 6. I’ll get them all some day.

MGS4 Project Itoh is on my buy list.

I want a full collection of the Usagi Yojimbo books.

I personally could not sympathize with McCandless at all. Plus, Krakauer’s writing is, like you said, filler-ish. That one random side story about his own wanderings just came out of nowhere.

YES! The chances of someone agreeing with me on this on a gaming forum of all places is just crazy. Brofist, mang.

Unfortunately I still have to write pages about this POS for my summer assignment. I swear they’re fucking with us.

brand bookshop in glendale and the iliad in noho are coo.

i’m good.

Hell yeah! The Deliverator delivers… always on time.

I had to deal with that piece of shit book when I was in high school. Thank god that ended quickly.

The movie was decent, though.

I’m just going to say that my Kindle was the finest purchase of my life. My goodness, that thing has provided me with a lot of joy.

I’m reading Jonathan Strange and Mr Norrell at the moment. It’s a weird fantasy book about old-timey English magic with none of the Tolkein shit. It’s really interesting.

Kindle has been a double-edged sword for me. It’s convenient but I books make a great, lazy home decoration. I’ll be grateful not to move 200 lbs of books again, though.

200lbs? I can tell you’re a reader, so I’ll bet you are severely under-estimating the weight of your collection.

On an entirely related note, holy fucking christ I hate moving for exactly that reason.

I have since given away almost all of my books except maybe eight because I moved to San Francisco for a year. Egg on my face when I came back and couldn’t read Napoleon’s heavy ass biography. I still hurt over those books. My gawddamn copy of Zombie Survival Guide was in that pile!

Still, it was nothing when I helped my friend and his wife move into their fifth-floor walk-up apartment in Park Slope. If I remember correctly it was about 6 large boxes of books, at least two of them nothing but text books. It took my back three days to recover.

Snow Crash is amazing. If you enjoy more sci-fi and haven’t read Asimov’s Foundation series you really should. Hell, the first book isn’t even really sci-fi so much as Historical Fiction set in the future. It’s very fun to read a fictional History of the World.

On the Fantasy side I always recommend Mistborn and its sequels.

Remember a few months ago I was talking about a new book I wrote? It’s finally ready to show off to you guys.

The preview on the back of the book:

"Areva was finally about to have everything she ever wanted. After years of training and dedication, Areva had finally begun making a name for herself in the world of professional Muay Thai kickboxing. She had respect, admirers, and most importantly, the eye of the young foreigner who came to her village and stole her heart. What she didn’t expect was that same foreigner suddenly abandoning her with allegations of murdering her father surrounding him, further compounded by the involvement of the international crime syndicate Sheol. Suddenly, her somewhat sheltered world is smashed wide open as her quest for the truth takes her on a worldwide tour rife with danger, conspiracies, and rivals more powerful than anyone she had encountered previously. Searching for the man she once loved, Areva overcomes a plane hijacking, crashes a television taping, poses as a showgirl, and uncovers conspiracies that drag her into the treacherous world of Sheol, inadvertently becoming a viral video darling and forging a modern-day legend.

In a modern-day martial arts tale of love and adventure, “Sheol Must Fall” follows the journey of a young woman as she matures and grows with each passing experience, and her estranged lover whose hesitance to run increases with each passing chapter."

The preview for you guys

This story is my love letter to all things fighting games, being a rewrite of an original fighting game idea I wrote back in 2007 when MUGEN was still the in-thing. For those of you that like to have pictures to go along with your story, not only is there that godlike cover art from Kandoken, but there’s interior illustrations for each chapter. I’ve been talking to one of the Beast’s Fury creators, having met him and Final Round, and when I see him against next week the Fall Classic, he’s going to give me the contacts I’ll need to get a kickstarter for this off the ground so that Sheol Must Fall can become what it was always meant to be: a playable fighting game.
