The Link: The Quick-Disconnect JLF Shaft!

Got mine and freaked out a little because i couldn’t get the clip back on the bottom. Turns out the little white bushing i put back on upside down. After I flipped it back, it went on easy.
I have to say it does pull off pretty easy if you pull straight up but I played ssf4 for a while and had no issues. I’m super happy with it, and glad I have it for future travel/tourneys.

Actually I think I’ve found the culprit. Take the pivot out and put it in place on a Link and on a regular shaft, hold the pivot in place and play with the shafts. The Link has a lot more wobble, I think this is where it’s coming from. When you compare the two, the stock shaft has a really shallow indentation before the thick part of the shaft that the flat part of the pivot rests against, but The Link has a 1mm or so indentation.

I’ve taken my JLF apart several times and put it back together (I’ve had the inner dust washer out since I’ve installed it btw) but I think this indentation is causing it. Do you guys not notice it?

Dan,

Got another spring you can toss in, a tighter one? I see what you mean, but I’m not entirely sure it’s the relief.

One other suggestion if it’s bugging you, got a bit of scotch tape you can smoothly put around the shaft, where it touches end to end but doesn’t overlap? I’m talking just underneath the taper, only wide enough for the pivot bushing and no further.

I can take apart my other TE and wind its spring into the one on the Link-modded JLF. I guess I’ll go do that in a sec.

I have a suspicion it’s happening like this, I think as you tilt the stick with The Link installed, the pivot doesn’t get pushed right away, but instead The Link itself tilts the flat part of the pivot into the relief, then once that happens it can tilt. The wobble is the relief being loose within the pivot.

getting hype

I just tried wrapping tape around the shaft, it felt like it dampened the wobble a little, but it’s still very much present

I can take apart my other TE in a bit I suppose. I did try wrapping a spare Hori VX spring into the JLF spring but that didn’t work.

If anyone is having the problem with the link and it looking to have it powder coated a different color I can add millimeter or so can be added mounting numb to fix the wobbly problem making for stronger connection without restricting movement

I’m not getting enough clearance for the e clip. I’m trying to install in an Qanba Q4RAF.

OK, just threw in another JLF spring, and it makes the stick way too stiff, and that bit of wobble is still there.

My main concern is, do I have a defect (I doubt it because my other Link (ordered two) is the exact same), or is this wobble something that every Link-modded JLF is going to have? It makes for a sloppy and very different feeling that really throws me off. I’m not sure I want to stick with The Link if either this is unsolvable or I have to fix it with something like tape that will wear away…

I uploaded a video showing the looseness:

The white-balltop-stick in the red TE is a stock JLF, the black-balltop-stick in the ghetto white TE is a Link-modded JLF.

No one else is experiencing this?

Fit nice.might do a couple tweaks with a little shaving but it plays perfect.

Just got the links I pre-ordered today. I’m really happy with them.

I didn’t notice this problem until you pointed it out, but for me it isn’t a deal breaker, but it is there nonetheless. On my beta unit, this was much less pronounced. it definitely wobbles more than my beta unit. Yeah I can see some people it being an issue. It seems to feel like there is a larger dead zone.

I noticed this too but I actually anticipated it so I wasn’t that surprised to find it true.

Got mine in the mail today. I tried to install it, but the e-clip warped when I took it off. It would only sit loosely on the end of the shaft, so after a bit of use it would fall off. As such, my initial impressions are a bit incomplete.

-I had no problem with the pieces pulling apart. I started lightly and worked my way past whatever force it would experience during normal play, with no issues.

-Depending on how you hold/handle the joystick, some people might have a problem with unhooking it. You don’t have to lift the collar far to get it to the point where it releases. It wasn’t an issue for me, but if you hold it from underneath you may need to get used to it (I think someone referred to this as the “wineglass” method).

-Attaching/detaching the segments is a breeze. The collar slides smooth, so you attach/detach with one hand no problem.

-I had checked this thread before I installed it, so I looked for wobble. There was some, but there is also some wobble with the normal shaft. I can’t make a fair comparison until I do something about the e-clip (going to try reshaping it, but I might need to replace it).

-The Link itself has no wiggle/wobble between the two pieces. They hold together firmly.

I wish I could have given it a proper play-test. But I’ll mess with the e-clip tomorrow and maybe check some things with a digital caliper. So far I am pleased with how this shaped up, congrats Phreak.

I made a video of an install on a Hori RAP vx-sa, after some editing i will upload and link!

The issue is noted, working on a solution now. I’m all ears to workarounds anyone else may come up with, find a kapton/vinyl fitting/tube that will fit in between the shaft/pivot to reduce what you’re seeing? Let me know, I’ll buy them and include them with all future units and ship them out to pre-order people as well.

Thanks for the feedback, the hole plug is first up in accessories to include btw, I just didn’t have time to develop one before release. Again, now that they’re out, if anyone comes up with something that works for them, post it up and I’ll link it in the OP when I get to updating it (later today more than likely).

I think a 24mm button plug with the tabs cut off will work for now, or simply a piece of painters tape. Either way I’ll be looking into a permanent solution to include with the units.

The bottom part is the same size as a jlf shaft…if there is wiggle its because u need to do some maintenance on the rest of ur jlf. (Switches or plastic innards) anyone with wiggle should just get a new jlf.

Put it this way…the only reason that u will have wiggle is if ur bottom piece of the link doesn’t fit somewhat snug in the 3 plastic pieces of the jlf. Compare ur stock jlf shaft fitting with that bottom piece.I did that and the fitting was identical.urs should be as well.

By the way, I improvised a hole cover out of the dust washer, a business card placed over it, and a magnet placed over the business card. I don’t know how well it’d hold in place when things are pushing against it in a bag or something, but it’s a start.

For a hole cover, I suggest on getting a 24mm hole plug, remove the snap in tabs, and will glue a earth magnet to the top of the hole plug.

Doesn’t the 24mm hole plug go in too deep on the side edges, even without the snap-in tabs?
