Couple different explanations could be reasonable. Though meaty is also perfectly reasonable. It could have something to do with strange hit boxes in the same way that causes s.HP >Fireball >Sweep to work on Chun.
Some of those characters that are listed as not sweepable actually can be sweeped, but only after a cross-up tatsu. I haven’t tried with everyone, but Ryu for example can be sweeped after a cross-up tatsu relatively easily.
I think it works with Abel too, but I can’t remember.
x-up tatsu > sweep works on everyone, it’s the ground lk.tatsu > sweep that’s character specific.
Okay, apparently I can’t get my dazzle working so that is the highest quality video I can put out of that setup. You have full permission if you wanna put up a direct capture video displaying the combo.
I also found another setup against Abel. You land a lvl 2 or 3 focus and instead use cr.Strongx3 xx light tatus, sweep. This one is somewhat fishy because if the focus was done point blank, the sweep might fail after the tatsu.
Plz note that if the focus lands counter hit, you need to take a tiny step forward before you start the combo.
Personally, I think these setups are pretty impractical.
Just to say thank you to loyalsol what a legend with all this info i can read for years able you can sweep with cr mp st mp cr mp tatsu sweep just a move i prefer as it is 3 hits still you can get with mp and is better close range i find with out jump in attack.also long range Hk kicks cr mk lk tatsu sweep works you can also loop into kicks of J hk cr lp cl mp st lp kicks keep up the good work.
too bad he can’t teach you how to avoid run-on sentences
Dont say I never showed you anything useful.
It would be great if someone could actually determine exactly how many frames you have to sweep each character, i.e Boxer 3f, Guile 1f, Dhalsim 4f, Adon 2f etc, or frame advantage after lk tatsu for every character before they hit the ground. Has this been done already? I’m new here.
Technically every character in the game can be swept after lk tatsu, IF the tatsu hits meaty. Set dummy to record: sweep - meaty tatsu - sweep. Completely impractical of course, but just watching Ryu get swept after lk tatsu was fun
Maybe one day we’ll find viable setups to make the tatsu hit meaty i.e Abel’s focus crumple, cr.mp x3, tatsu, sweep. Hell if Sako can combo into Evil Ryu’s 7 frame sweep from his +5 stand jab then we can figure something out!
P.S. I can’t change my username from my profile(should be anti_air_christ not ‘chrst’), is there a mod or admin that can help me sort that out? Thanks.
Updated for Ultra.
I’ll add this too. Maybe we’ll find options to sweep “unsweepable” chars later in Ultra who knows…
Hate to say this Shab but those sweep setups no longer work in Ultra. Because of the expanded hitbox on tatsu you can’t take advantage of Abel’s hurtbox. Same thing for El Fuerte. I already on checked.
<-- sad panda
So for characters where Tatsu - Sweep isn’t possible, what do you guys tend to use for an alternate follow up? Tatsu - HP DP, then just freestyle from there?
I personally like to go for the HP DP ender and then a semi - meaty HP red fireball (especially now in Usf4). I then set the stage with jumping back twice, throwing a LP or MP Jump back fireball low to the ground (match up dependent) and then a light grounded fireball (to bait a jump forward) and the stage is usually at neutral after that. Infiltration and Tokido do a similar thing so I stole idea from them. Covers a lot of b.s. and keeps Akuma from trouble while you are trying to think of ideas re-establish offense.
Hp shaku after hp dp is risky IMO, the gap is too large. They can jump forward and punish you hard. In my experience this can only be done (safely) after lp/mp dp.
Might not have tested it accurately though so correct me if I’m wrong.
After hp dp I do lp fireball or neutral jump air fb. We have the fastest walk speed in the game as well, we can surprise them with a walk up kara throw, timing it so that you arrive in grab range just as he’s waking up.
Also, switching that up with meaty hp xx fb/shaku could be a great way to bait crouch techs, push the opponent, chip and gain a lot of meter at the same time.
Nothing wrong with orthodox SF pressure
Ever since DWU, do you think its still more advantageous to sweep or to go for damage?
Wasn’t there a list somewhere that covered the characters that would get hit twice by cs.hk when they are crouch blocking? That would be useful to update too. Wish it was in this thread.
Either I’m getting a lot better at tatsu > sweep or it seems to be way easier to do in Ultra.

Thanks for the thread, I think it would be more complete if it mentioned how fast each character should be swept (just to give players a better idea about the timing), for example this is how I feel the timing is from my experience (will rate from a scale of 1 to 5, sweep comes out fastest @ 1 and slowest @ 5):
Balrog: 4
Sagat: 2
Fuerte: 1
Cammy: 3
Dhalsim: 5
Cody: 2
…etcI could be wrong though since I only started sweeping after tatsu recently.
As for plinking, I use cr.hk~mk myself too, but from the videos I’ve seen of Japanese pros playing SSFIV with the inputs on, they seem to do cr.hk~mk+lk or cr.hk+mk ~ lk, anyone has any idea if this is more effective? here’s a video of someone saying that it’s called double plinking and it’s more effective:

There’s another thing that he mentions as true double plinking, but it seems way too hard for me to execute at the moment!
wow i had no idea tht’s why i couldn’t ever hit tht fucking thing against characters i knew it wood work on i wood do it after i do the tatsu like as soon as i could now i know differently thanks bruh i’ve picked akuma bakc up 2 days ago i played him in vanilla but now i see he’s my character
