Metroid’s history has been interesting over the years since it started out on NES and up until now. They could do some nice things with that franchise if it even decides to come out for Wii U.
Why Ganon Isn’t in Zelda: Skyward Sword
Edit:
Nintendo Video just put ‘Ballad of the Goddess’ up on the 3DS. It twas heaven.
I’m playing shadow complex right now…and it seriously makes me want a new classic style Metroid.
I wonder what are Nintendo’s plans for that series…especially after the backlash from the last game. Something to continue from the timeline after Fusion would be really nice. I’m wondering how that’d go.
I agree, but its history is far from the consecutive releases of first-party masterpieces that is the Zelda and Mario histories. Don’t get me wrong though, I’ve adored every Metroid, and it’s easily my favorite Nintendo property. I mean shit, I’m the guy who owns this muthafucker.
Last I heard, Sakamoto does not know where to go with the series. I don’t think that means much, and it might not even be true, but that’s the last official word to come out. There have been credible rumors of a Metroid 3DS, but I forget the source.
I wouldn’t be surprised if the virtual release of Fusion is a planned marketing tactic to build hype for the next Metroid which is probably currently in production.
Anyway, Zelda…
I’m gonna try to beat Skyward Sword in one weekend.
Assuming you meant Yokoi, I wrote a response defending Sakamoto and claiming him the heart of Metroid. But really, Metroid has never been the same since Yokoi left Nintendo. I read somewhere that from the start he intended Metroid to be a trilogy that ended with Super. Even though Sakamoto was on the R&D that created Metroid, and directed the best 2-D ones, without Yokoi they all feel very different. I feel like Sakamoto is trying to stretch an already completed idea. Remaking/extending the original with MZM, Other: M having a lot more filler and less depth than Super, and finally his public statement he doesn’t know where to go with Metroid… it all suggests that he’s not owning up to the franchise like Yokoi clearly did, and like Miyamoto clearly does with his franchises.
Maybe the best option actually is to have Retro continue with the series (hopefully with a new 2-D game), perhaps under Sakamoto’s direction and for the fucking love of all things good, get Yamamoto on the god-damn music again.
I’d prefer Sakamoto and Miyamoto get together and be in charge of an in-house team that creates a 2-D Metroid, but I seriously doubt the N wants Shiggy working on anything other than their main two games and his secret new IP.
Yea that’s the man. That dude knew what was up. Sakamoto was just along for the ride, it’s clear he doesn’t know what to do with the series and has absolutely no grasp of good science fiction. I’m not saying he’s a bad guy or anything. He’s just not the right fit for Metroid.
Thinking about it Metroid has been writing itself into a corner steadily over the past few titles. I mean I suppose they move the series on from metroids and go with a new threat like the X parasite but it’s probably going to have to be a more gradual thing. Though technically after what happened in Other M they could continue branch off into more corrupt federation territory…that’d probably be one of the ways of keeping the metroid’s in the picture. I da know…I actually wouldn’t mind Sakamoto giving things another shot and maybe actually using Jennifer Hale as the voice this time around (nothing against Jessica Martin’s performance but I don’t know why they changed consdering Hale was already doing voice work for the character…maybe too busy with Mass Effect?) and seeing what he learned from the experience. I just don’t want NIntendo to just give up on the franchise for a hot second and it end up taking a 6-7 year hiatus like it did after Super. This is probably the wrong thread to get deep into Metroid theory though so I’ll stop it here. Might have to make that thread in the future after all…
back on track…it seems like the embargo on most reviews are going to be lifted on Friday from the sounds of things. There’s been a surprising amount of people coming out of the woodwork and reserving this game in the past few weeks. I haven’t seen reserves on any wii title quite like this not since Brawl.
not a complete remake but done in the same fashion as excitebike 3d and what not. Could be quite interesting especially with some of the SNES effects done in 3D. I’d definitely be interested to see what Lost Woods would look like.
