The King Thread

It doesn’t really matter unless the crouching version has an easier time hitting. I just do it from crouching since that’s how I start most of my dp motions (especially important to learn when trying to knee a crouching opponent off an EX Konvict).

Is it just me or King could use some quality-of-life changes. I’m not a King expert by far, but it pisses me off how his counters are you holding forward to press them. It’s like… I’m playing against Ryu and I know he does blockstring into donkey kick, I try to counter him but just get ex shining wizard. It’s so unintuitive to do when you’re blocking.

It also annoys me when I try to do jaguar step and I’m holding forward obviously but then I get a counter… I think I might just be doing the motion improperly for that, but I think the motion for the counters should be flipped around, maybe there’s something i’m missing but it annoys me.

I always do the chest bump (cl:hp) instead of cr.:hp: on juggle combos; much easier to connect with for me.

But to agree with Guy, the counter commands were poorly thought out, if only because how long this this game holds information; it’s REALLY tough to do a counter after crouch blocking, or Step after walking forward.

  1. with kings cmd throws you have to know if your opponent is going to be standing or crouching. - “cool, at least they have great range to make up for it.”

  2. they can poke you out of it. - “cool, at least EX has invincibility to make up for it.”

  3. they can throw you out of EX cmd throws. - “cool… wait… wtf???”

What are the Pros and the Cons of King?

I might try him out but he feels a little weak for me from what I can tell.

Pros: Some of the best damage in the game, only meterless anti-air counter (Lilli’s takes a meter to ensure it works), some of the best juggles around, can blow through everything with meter, MUSCLE BUSTER. Can go from almost any hit into his BnB with 1 meter or Launcher (if it was a :hk:).

Cons: One of the most meter hungry characters in the game, footsies are only okay, has a tool for every situation but they aren’t that versatile (he has an anti-air counter, an anti-standing counter, and his Launcher is basically an anti-crouching counter, Jaguar Step goes through fireballs and can punish slow moves, can frametrap standing with EX Giant Throw, crouching with EX Shining Wizard). Basically you can deal with most anything if you have meter, but you need to have some predictive abilities and some meter. Wake up game isn’t that strong, and his EX Command throws get beat by normal throws, projectiles, and other command throws and are thus only useful in frame traps IMO.

Thanks! I’ll look into him in training mode.

Lili can AA counter with the :lp: version.

The reason I don’t count her without meter is that it’s EXCEPTIONALLY unreliable; any moderately timed aerial attack will require a :mp: while some, such as an almost too short Rufus Divekick or some character’s crossups, will need a :hp: IIRC.

Ah ok fair enough.

King - Bustin’ Bitches

god i love this character

Pointless bit of information but after hitting a opponent with jump in HP you can initiate another jumping HP for a combo and land on the other side of them. Not terribly useful but it does seem to apply we could do some jump away instant overheads al la Vega of Chun (she can right) I haven’t checked yet though. With mixups game being good as is I don’t see this getting much mileage but still fun to know.

Something I’ve noticed that needs confirmation: King’s Mid-air Leg Screw does not work against crossups

With the discovery of his far s.LK being low I think he has a damn good mixup game. But I do not think he should be thought of a as a grappler, he feels more like hybrid grapple, Alex from SF3 comes to mind. I myself like using his forward MP to try and mind fuck my opponent, don’t finish the string and pressure a few times until the really have to worry if I am going to finish and go for overheard which ends in a combo or go for a low which is safe and can combo OR go for a throw. Been getting alot of giant swings when they expect the overhead. I think throws must saved for very specific situations though, get them to sleep on it and condition them to block and forget you have them. In general I think his strikes will get him more mileage but a well-placed throw is clutch

So…does anyone else use Tic-Wizard? lolz

King has a legit tic throw game by abusing cr. :lk: > :lk: Shining Wizard(Tomahawk) if you can force your opponent into block stun then keep the block stun with cr. :lk: you get a free Shining wizard if they don’t do a 5 frame reversal or Alpha Counter that is…can’t argue with 200 damage tho.

Yes, this. I’ve been doing this, and I’m surprised almost every actual King player (i just play him for fun/secondary right now) doesn’t seem to know this exists. You can block-confirm into either command grab, cr.lk into shining wizard or cr.lp into the high grab (if you see them standing) Sure this doesnt really work against scrubs that mash buttons, but once you can condition them not to, it’s a great tool I think.

Check page 5 dawg  I use that too! You’re right I don’t see other Kings use it much online. Maybe they don’t want to risk using the wrong throw on the opponent, but I thought we were all playing Yomi Fighter x Oki :looney:

I rarely use his throws aside from the occasional SW and the one that ends a juggle combo. And yes, his s. short is kind of ridiculous, because it simply means your opponent is not safe at all whenever you’re in range for it, and you really can abuse it.

Mid-Air Dragon Screw Counter doesn’t stop cross ups…tested it last night against Hugo…however I don’t have to respect the big bastard anymore either because as long as im not in cross up range or if i can backdash in time…fuck that big slow hella active body splash…i know 170 damage isn’t much…but i like calling it a fuck you button…same with Juri…wana Pinwheel, overhead or divekick me?!? also if shes CADC alot…fuck dat bitch up with a Shining Wizard…shes crouching on the start up of all normal pinwheels and shes crouching on the recovery as well…most of the time EX Wizard will catch a blocked Pinwheel but i’ve had success with normal ones too if done right or at a distance.

I’m experimenting with other things but…Poison as Kings new fight promoter…im hella feeling this team…also its going to be some shit when King gets dat alt.2 costume…because King is much cooler as a Heel(like Armor King).

the input for Kings QCB+P is fucking KILLING ME. this shit comes out for no reason what so ever is annoying and I hope somehow gets fixed.

pretty much 321+P can cause the move to come out
