The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match

So has anyone had a chance to try out Goenitz or Daimon? Assuming Daimon is good like usual but if Goenitz is good than damn thatd be amazing. Great to hear Yama is good.

didn’t try the hyper hopping but I’ll try to test it later

Reg. Geese’s C-reppuken slides forward so it’s advisable not to do it when you’ve cornered your opponent cause you’ll slide right next to them and eat whatever combo they want throw at you. It’s fairly safe at mid-screen though.

Blue Mary is apparently much shorter than I remember. While ducking she can easily avoid hop attacks (Geese’s hop attacks anyway).

This may be to early to say but dodging seems to be a bit broken. You’re timing has to be fairly precise to hit someone coming out of a dodge, otherwise they can just do it back-to-back and dodge all your attacks. The AI is especially annoying with it’s dodging.

Incidentally, it’s beginning to look like SNKP didn’t do much testing or couldn’t be bothered but the AI almost borders on retarded. When the AI uses EX mode you can put it into an infinite dodge loop. Using Yamazaki perform a snake arm and hold the button to prevent it’s release, the AI will stop whatever it’s doing an go into a dodge-loop until the snake arm is released. You can also get the same result by doing back-to-back snake arms.

very kof95-esque

You can always throw them out of the dodge, and throws are untechable in Extra mode.

The high tiers have ways of easily avoiding the fireball zoning, hence why you don’t see fireball zoning in high level play (besides from Iori or Kusanagi, their fireballs are good). Chris can run/slide under them and easily punish. Iori can crouch B under. Kyo can sweep under. Chizuru can slide under (and I think crouch B under as well). The damage fireball zoning does is just too low in general, opponent can make up for all the times they got hit with one combo.

j.D is good as an air to air, but if you do that on someone who is grounded, especially on characters with low crouches like Iori, you’re going to get owned. He is an effective grappler, but has little to do with j.D. Don’t oversimplify the game, you don’t know what you’re talking about.

In theory, if there is ANY vulnerability after a dodge, you can easily punish it with a meaty attack.

Daimon’s a grappler, if you call Orochi Yashiro a grappler. The term grappler is misleading anyway, it isn’t supposed to mean someone who just uses grabs.

Shermie, Orochi Yashiro, Daimon, Clark, and maybe Ralf, can be considered a grappler. Not sure if you can consider Benimaru a grappler…while he has two throws, they are rarely used in 98.

Edit Crap, meant to add this to my previous reply.

Daimon isn’t really a grappler. He has grabs, but they aren’t his main tools for winning. A true grappler bases his gameplay around landing grabs. Daimon uses throws only occassionally, most of the time he’s controlling the opponent with his beastly pokes / normals. Same with Ralf. They are hybrids; they have some useful command throws, but they are mostly a complement to their main strategy rather than a defining aspect of their style.

On the other hand, while O. Yashiro’s pokes play a vital role in his gameplay, throws are a central part of his strategy.

Then there is no such character that can be considered a grappler.

O. Yashiro’s gameplay might be to land grabs, but how he attempts to do this is through poke mixups/mindgames, just like Daimon. Sure, when Daimon is far away from his opponent, his normals are the center of his gameplay but you can say the same about O Yashiro.

Extra mode can break throws now, and besides that only command throws can grab someone in the middle of a dodge. It’ll be worth it though for dodging to be broken; if you don’t have an infinite, extra mode is so far below advance mode you’d need a telescope to see it.

This is true and this is how I look at dodging being beefed up…as you say what else do you have if you dont have some infinite or crazy lockdown???

Is there a release date fore KOF 98 UM?

DG: sending e-mail!!!

Gotcha.

LOL, are you serious?

You are saying it yourself. Yashiro’s pokes are a complement to his main goal: landing grabs. Daimon’s main goal isn’t landing a grab, it’s shutting you down with pokes. But if there’s a chance to land a thow, he can go for it. There’s a clear difference.

It’s like Iori. He has a dangerous command grab. But his main strategy isn’t setting up that grab, it’s just another of his many options. Not the central one. That’s why he’s not a grappler, even when he has an useful command grab.

Hm, that indeed sounds like too much of a buff. I guess we’ll just have to wait to see if it’s indeed broken or not.

Well actually I shouldn’t have even said that. If the opponent keeps trying to avoid grabs by jumping, then O Yashiro’s main goal is not going to be to land grabs.

Are you saying that O Yashiro’s hcf+P mixup(as the opponent is falling down) is so damn good that landing that throw is the main part of his game? Because otherwise, I can’t see why would you would say O Yashiro’s main goal is to land throws but Daimons isn’t.

Daimon’s hcb f+P sets up a TON of wakeup options (including unblockables and ambigious roll in combos), just like O Yashiro’s hcf+P has ambigious sideswitches and crossups. So, if you say that O Yashiro’s main goal is to land that grab, you could argue it is Daimon’s goal to land the hcb f+P too. They both have very useful pokes and jump attacks, as well as anti-airs (although Daimon’s is more useful), I don’t see how their overall strategy is different enough that Daimon would not be considered a grappler but O Yashiro would.

So after playing the game again last nite and this time against high level players I can now confirm that the tier list will chagen. Forget about iori, goro, yashiro, chris, its all about the Ex characters now (Geese, King, Mai) Also Heavy D is nasty, Eiji too.

P.S. Kyo is BROKEN :frowning:

I told you I have a hunch EX Geese was the shit…I knew EX Mai looked good…And Ex King…they are gonna be part of my team…vids confirmed that…EX King rape…EX Mai fucking people up also.

Man I don’t know who my team is gonna be yet…I never really had a team on KOF '98 honestly. I have Dreammatch '99 on Dreamcast and I just play the single play on that since it takes forever to load when you playing team play…but thats all I have:sad:but once KOF '98:UM comes out, I can definitely say that Andy is one of them:woot:I miss playin with that crazy shinranui ninja lol

Emil:

Iori’s Kuzukaze is also very dangerous, you can get huge damage from it and you have mixup options after it. Is setting that grab up his main goal? Or is it another of his tools, that add to his many good options? Would you define him as a grappler?

Goro has also powerful options after his command throw. But his main strategy isn’t landing throws, mainly because he generally isn’t as close to you as Yashiro thanks to his poking strategy.

Yashiro fits the role of a pure grappler way better than Goro.

I always thought Daimon’s DP + K was pretty fuckin’ good. I saw people use this to grab opponents out of DM start-ups. :looney:

Well, if they managed to overpower the EX’s to the level of the top tier- then that’s probably good for the game. I don’t think EX-King will end up top though- where’s the air D?

Since I think UM will take off in NC, I’m going to play it if it does, but I’m not nearly as enthused as I was. Would likely be EX Mai, Yama, I don’t know- Kasumi? Lucky?
