The King of Fighters '98 Ultimate Match

Those combos are rare to see in a match (as they aren’t too practical) and they aren’t really duolon-esque. It’s mainly just hitting close C a few times while the clones are hitting, then finish up with a jump in combo.

with Duolon-esque I meant long combos involving a DM, plus you could also finish it with the seal super (in the corner I think…dunno if it can be done midescreen) dealing a lot of damage (and sealing the opp)

I was bored so I complied a chart of Run speeds of each character in 98UM. I’ll most likely do Walk speeds next since those are also character specific.

Lucky being playable is the shit!! Need more combos for him as I just use him for zoning.

well thats the way he should be played…a friend of mine uses it (very good IMO) and hes damn annoying, with the pillar super, teleport game and all his tricks, hes a very effective zoning/keep away character

normal yamazaki basically still the same. ex isn’t better at all, hes not bad though. he does play unique. hes too slow compared to normal IMO, especially those snake fists. and no fucking head butt??? wtf.

I think he’s mostly the same. Normal version slightly better then EX, which is just as powerful but harder to use.

I think he’s upper mid, but more difficult then most characters to get potential out of, gotta play smart with him.

I have no problem with Yamazaki being hard to use. So I take that I can learn about him from OG 98 and apply it to UM 98?

Ex Mary is too pringles. Started playing her seriously, and she is mad fun. Here are a few things about her.

Spiders(air qcf p or p follow up from Young Dive) is great for stopping a jump early and baiting anti airs.

Young Dive is a really buff move in wake up or small block string situations to use to cross up or as another overhead option. Also, running Young Dive(run, immediately hold df, then up punch whenever) can be useful as well sometimes.

st. c, fwd+a xx Genei, cr. c, fwd+a xx dp b xx dp k xx giant swing does about half life in the dm version and about 75-85% in the SDM version. It also works anywhere, but you have to be really close to the person. If you think you’re not close enough to hit the cr. c midscreen after the activation or you hit them with a j. d midscreen, then charge for a slider, and do b slider xx qcf k xx dwn+p.

She has a really long dodge attack for those who use dodge. Dodge attack xx b slider/Daibing is buff.

Basic mixup when in is simple high(fwd+a)/low(cr. b)/Throw(cmd dodge follow ups/tk spider(risky)/young dive spider/Daibing). This is good because all of these lead to unrollable knockdowns. Which starts it over again.

While in Escalation mode, think Yun-esque while he’s in Genei mode in 3s. The goal of Escalation is to get damage. Also, like Yun in 3s, it’s pretty safe to activate on knockdowns and in guard strings(sorta, watch out for gc blowouts).

But against her, you can keep her out, and she kinda has a hard time anti airing anyone. Df+b works in some instances. If you can time it right, cmd dodge can work. Alternate guard can fuck her over if she gets too throw happy, but she can counter this by cr. b, cr. a xx b slider xx qcf k.

But yeah there’s some stuff on her for those who were interested. Solid A class to me.

Damn, do the Riot characters have like less stamina or something? Or were they used because they run faster? (Unsure if they even do)

I think they do run faster than some. I don’t know about the stamina thing. O.Leona was definitely used for her run, as it goes under so many fireballs.

What was with that Kyo versus the 8 wine cups combo… why ws he recovering so fast? was it some weird thing as his punches hit the 8 wine cups?

Don’t forget you can juggle off the Kick follow up to the ch, d,u which is good for escalation mode rush down.

Also Slider goes under a variety of fireballs and can be a good poke if spaced right.

The flip kick move while in escalation mode is not an overhead. I wouldn’t do it, if I were you.

The Grab range on her other super is ridiculous, makes for a really nice reversal

Anti-air is actually pretty solid imo as her dp catches pretty much everything and you can also counter through the rest.

Also Spider and her counter into grab can both be followed up by super as well in escalation mode.

She’s hella buff and one of my favorite characters to use now.

Not sure if this was fixed in UM but in 98 and 2k2, you can punish Mary’s f+A even if it hit you, although at least in 2k2 you can cancel it to super even if it wasn’t cancelled into.

Emil what are your thoughts on Daimon… was he really depowered so much that nobody will play him now?

I hardly see anyone use Daimon now. Let’s see, he can combo into his earthquake now but what’s the point when hcf+C and hcb f+P will also combo…his stomp glitch is gone so it’s not that much of a big deal to risk getting anti-aired by him. His one frame stomp glitches after knockdowns also seem to be gone but I haven’t done any testing. I don’t see much improvement in him and far too many things taken away.

What about Kyo? He’s still pretty damn good. He got shafted by so many players just because his Mu Shiki damage was nerfed?

No. It’s an unrollable knockdown now. It’s not punishable on hit.

I didn’t know you could juggle off of the k follow up.

I’ll have to work on the anti airs more I guess, usually I’ll just dodge, or hh back cd.
