I live in NY. If you want to, add me on Xbox to see if the KOF98 connection is not bad between us. Like you, I wish there were more people around here to play more KOF with. I think it would help me actually get better at the games even though I’ve been playing them for a good while now.
It’ll probably be fairly smooth if you are a short distance away. I live in Sydney and play some guys from Melbourne regularly on 98 UM on XBLA and the connection is generally really excellent.
You could always try GGPO for OG 98, but the competition seems to be very good. I always get my ass kicked bloody when I play KOF on GGPO. I mean, I’m not a very good player at all, but still.
I’m pretty dissapointed about 2k2UM being continually delayed though, I would really love to play that. I have a PS2 now, but I don’t want to buy it when the XBLA version is just around the corner supposedly. I also just realised how few EX Characters there are in 2k2UM Compared to 98UM. Kinda dissapointing, since I used to use a number of EX Chars in 98.
Seeing as there is no '95 Kyo in 2k2UM, which character plays most like him? Looking at move lists I would say Kusanagi Clone?
Yeah I’m cool with that. I don’t know your gamertag but just add me up on the 360. I mainly just go into the training mode and practice combos for no reason, lol. Maybe it’s 'cause I just don’t want to get rusty in KOF. Just in case one day I do actually run into someone to play it with.
I don’t know why every time I ask someone to play KOF with me, it’s always like…
“Alright just tell me which characters are top tier.”
“Show me all the infinites and I’ll play.”
“I’ll play if you teach me the combos.”
I’ve just asked another dude to play with me today and he said, “Yeah I’ll try it. Hopefully you can show me some basic cheese so I can whore it out.” And these are all from SSFIV players. I mean there’s not that much big of a difference between Street Fighter and the King of Fighters aside from Small Jumps. KOF has footsies, Super Cancel, dragon punches, SFII-style throws, charge characters, all that stuff. It’s just sort of weird to me that people make it seem like a completely different fighting game as if they would be completely confused while trying to play, lol.
I should try to play it on GGPO one of these days. I used to play 3rd Strike and get my ass handed to me every single time, lol. Speaking of, how come 2002 UM was never available to play on emulator? I mean 2002 is playable on MAME and Supercade. Why not the UM version? I don’t understand.
Actually I’ve just noticed that I can’t select Orochi Iori. Either he’s not in the game or I haven’t unlocked him yet. Can someone confirm this for me? I don’t use Orochi or EX versions of characters but I’d like to know because if I don’t have him then I’ll go unlock him.
I had to pop in KOF '95 to see what you were talking about, lol. I realized you’re talking about my favorite Kyo; the one from KOF XII and also KOF XIII. I didn’t know that version originally came from '95. I’ve always referred to him as, “The Kyo that can shoot projectiles”. So then I went through the different Kyo’s in 2002 UM and found out that Kusanagi is the closest to '95 Kyo. Kyo-1 is pretty simple and interesting to me though. I might just play with him for fun. And Kyo-2 is just a wack version of regular Kyo. I don’t know why anybody would want to play with Kyo-2, lol.
From what I understand, I just think it’s too new to have been properly emulated yet. I’m pretty sure that 2k2 was running on the NeoGeo Hardware, but UM wasn’t. I’m not sure it even had an arcade release to be honest. Either way, I think it’s just not possible to emulate it well yet, since it’s too new.
Ah cool, although he does look slightly different. I think he’s missing the HCB+K Running grab dealie. Either way, I only really played as '95 Kyo for a bit of fun, I didn’t have the patience to learn all the chain attack combos for regular Kyo in '98, seeing as I was only planning to play him for real casual matches.
Dude, regular Yuri in 98’ is as shitty as Louie Anderson’s ass cheeks.
Yuri is one of the best characters in both 2002og and 2002UM.
Pretty much, although Kyo-1 is similar but the lack of his Oniyaki uppercut can hurt him a lot.
Kyo-2 has better normals, better R.E.D Kick, better Aragami rekkas, and can do Mu Shiki as a level 1 DM (which combos off his lights).
Compared to Kyo-2, Shin Kyo has better command moves (f+b and df+D can be quick maxed), slight invincibility on his Oniyaki uppercut (Kyo-2 has no invincibility and Kusanagi has autoguard which is arguably better though), and the 182 Shiki DM which has good invincibility but won’t combo from light normals unlike Kyo-2’s Mu Shiki.
Way to toot your own horn!
Anyway DG, with all due respect… as a tournament organizer, it’s not Justin Wong (LOL) you want to compare yourself to, it’s Mr. Wizard, Ponder, etc.
Nice of you to diss me based on my location.
Look, forget about Guatemala… Costa Rica has the highest level of play for KOF2002 in Central America, and perhaps beyond.
Wouldn’t 95 Kyo be Kusanagi? I thought the whole reason for him was for people who wanted OG Kyo?
Yeah. I thought that was common knowledge…guess we have to re-educate the newer generation…
Ninja edit: Where are the tourney vids, DG?
How do I use the move “Omagatoki” with Angel? All I can understand is f+BCD and when I press that nothing happens.
Also, is there an easier way to do the slide input for Ryo 2nd HSDM(qcf+C~A)?
Do you know how her moves are categorized? She has a number of starters and enders. You can only cancel into it from a starter.
Nope…you have to do that maybe one frame before recovering from some kind of state that cannot be cancelled into qcf+C. Such states would be right before recovering from a roll, jump, max activation, supercancelled dp, some uncancellable move, blockstun, hitstun, recovery roll or getting up from a knockdown,
Thanks for the help.
182 shiki connects off of lights, lp version only
Does kusanagi have a decent mid screen max mode combo?
F+B with Kyo-2 can be quick maxed too!
Just saying if you aren’t here in the USA how would you know about what goes on in the USA Like I wouldn’t know about what goes on in Costa Rica but now that you said that I will certainly take a look, how many people in Costa Rica play 2002? I am sure I can set up Mexico vs. Costa Rica in the future we’ll talk if that is something they are down for.
Who do I need to contact about organizing Mexico vs. Costa Rica?
Shishioh- I get the vids in Thursday/Friday that is when I will begin uploading Game of Death footage.
Well it’s great to see your interest, shows how dedicated you are… and having foreign players here would be truly awesome. We might not make a lot of noise, but there are a good amount of dedicated players here as well. However, I’m going to be completely honest, because it really has been quite a while since I last participated in the local arcade scene, let alone going to the arcades. If I were to find out about any event that can make a visit down here worthwile, then I guess I will let you know.
Well I added you on MSN that way we can better talk about this because MvG is almost settled for now as it is slated to happen April 2011, and thus sure thing we can plan for MvC (lol what a name eh?) and if it’s good we can even do…MvC2!!! LOL.
OK so I finally got this game recently. I’m having a really hard time just linking normals. It’s reminding me of older KOF’s. Anyway, questions.
-
Is there an efficient way to link the normals? I even tried mashing. I 've been trying to imitate what the 1P command setting does. Even Hinako’s simple combo doesn’t work. I can’t seem to link stuff like those cr.Bx2>rest of combo repeatedly.
-
I still haven’t found an efficient way to use MAX mode yet. Trying to copy 2P command is pretty hard atm. Also, what happens a lot is me doing a move(like B) right after I activate MAX during a combo.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Uh, perhaps you should be a little more specific about what characters and combos you are trying to do?
Well you have to distinguish links from chains. Most of those combos are chains and not all chains have the same timing.
You’re hitting BC too late.
Thanks for the help again Emil.
Last question of the day…
Is there a reason Athena has 3 different finishers to her Psychic 9 DM or is it just for looks? Question also applies to her HSDM finishers as well.
