The Julia Chang Thread

I goofed with f+MP~LP stuff earrrrrly 2012 but the things I wanted to do were really frame tight and wasn’t worth the damage. Though there’s a lot of options you can do from it (f+MK>s.MP>s.HP string to push em to the corner or the kick followup which in turn you can tag cancel for a followup. Or cancel the 2nd hit of that string into a special.) I’ve been goofin with it more again to see if I can find stuff from it off that above string but she runs out of juggle points after the full string.

as for Tiger Strike, you literally get a left/right/up/down mixup off it. You can do the usual HP followup, or fake it and backdash out if you’re expecting some reversal. Or you can do the LP version which sets up for anything (throw, low, crossup, backdash for bait,or nothing, etc.) She gets a bunch of options regardless whatever you choose to do. If they get hit, back to the same mixup with the same oki game.

I never realized how much mileage I could get out of just doing a raw PC once in its optimal range. O__O

I just labbed it up with her today. What I love about this character is everything seems to link into everything else. Her moveset is like a puzzle that you can mix and match to suit the situation, like fragments in music.

Don’t see people doing this: Cr. MK, Launcher hits from the very tip of the MK hitbox. Some characters(Chun, Vega) with long reaching moves will whiff launcher, but Julia’s hits no matter what. It’s a pretty excellent whiff punish. Even better than Chun’s far.FP, Launcher, because it NEVER misses.

So while I’ve been playing in a bunch of casual matches I’m trying to figure something out with Julia. I noticed that after you land a tiger strike and it puts your opponent in the corner or close to it and you swift step after sometimes Julia will cross up to the other side just as they get up for a cross-up. I’ve been messing around with it more but I still can’t figure out how to get it consistently. It seems really random. Does anybody have any insight on this?

swift step should always cross up if they’re completely in the corner. If it doesn’t cross up, then they’re not completely in the corner. I usually don’t even bother if I know they’re near or in the corner because you’re not getting anything off it and you’re giving up Julia’s best position on screen.

on another note, I need to start goofing around with back throw>swift step as it cross up without a corner. Probably not much coming from it but dunno why i’m just noticing it now.

I’m making a video displaying how I feel Julia should be played. All her moves knockdown for a reason. Once you get the knockdown you cannot get away from Julia. She will chase you, punish rolls, or even worse…crumple you. All safely or on reaction.

The video will go into team synergy as well. It’s going to be pretty comprehensive I feel.

Why not use cr. LK? When at that range what do you use instead?

Would someone be willing to do a write up of all her 2013 combos? I know it’s a lot to ask but you could also add it to the 2013 combo thread and it would help so many people.

Also how does Hunter Link cr.mk after a PC at :42

PC is +7 but cr.mk has 8 frame start up. He doesn’t use meter either.

Double Post so sorry.

Most likely this.

If I’m wrong here, someone give me a heads up, por favor. :3

Getting back into the game and am trying to find a use for Mountain Rush. It’s so telegraphable and only seems useful in a few situations.

I personally use s.LK for pressure. It’s a high and just as good as cr.LK up close (cancels into specials also.) Best thing is no risk of raw launcher beating it out.

Outside of that, spam cl.MP, cr.MP, party crasher (ff+MP) since they’re all rather in your favor on block (and even more on hit.)

Mountain Rush…is that f.MK>MP?

Party Crasher and cr.mp are my favorite tools. cr.lk is still legit though, just not as crazy as it used to be.

Julia just has too many good buttons.

Party Crasher is great, but nothing irks me more than when Ryan Hunter does back to back PC and people think it’s a frame trap. That’s a +2 on block move, and he’s following it up with an 8f startup, folks. You all got jabs, use 'em.

I use tactics like this sometimes as well. It’s a pretty good way to agitate opponents and make them think you will leave gaps in certain places in your pressure, so they get baited into pressing something and then get counterhit.

I see your point. I’ll give it a try a few times and see if people start falling for it!

Who are some recommended point partners for Julia?

I know Law’s pretty good, but admittedly getting kind of bored of him.

I view Julia as a character who pairs well with just about anyone due to being well-rounded and having very consistent corner carry abilities. Any character where you want to focus on the corner game, especially someone who lacks solo damage output, would work very well with her.

You just described Poison word for word, which pleases me. Excellent corner game but no damage or ways to get the opponent there herself. Thing is, I cannot think offhand of any good way for Poison to tc into Julia for damage unless she can somehow follow up her DP. Poison’s other gimmick is being a great battery, but iirc Julia isn’t a very meter hungry anchor at all.

Also thinking Raven/Julia as he also fits your description and was considering Julia/King prior, but tentative of Julia at point now.
