The Jesse Ventura, I mean Haggar Thread (MvC3)

Are we sure that’s what it was, and not getting hit by Beserker? Even though that would make no sense considering Haggar’s gotta be beefy and it doesn’t do that much in one or two hits…

Maybe he takes increased damage if he counters something with it.

The more I watch the video, the more I’m convinced that it was the berzerker barrage that hurt him. Looks to me as though it has hyper armor properties (Mech Zangief).

Actually atm I’m more convinced it’s either that he countered something or lariat just takes away health.

He isn’t.

Don’t worry.

Pause at :46.

The lariat takes it and claws are still out of reach.

WHAAAAAA? Storywise?

Lariat turns all the health red, his health + red doesn’t go down.
If it was just super armor that wouldn’t happen, don’t think.

I just watched the frame-by-frame. It’s now obvious that lariat drains health. Watching the normal video, it made it seem as though Wolverine was dealing the damage.

I initially believed that lariat drained health, but I watched it a few more times lastnight and was convinced that Wolverine dealt it. So I guess this really is a straight up Final Fight nod. Looks like it could be a solid GTFO move.

They have matched before.

Zangief learned lariat from him and incorporated.

Haggar incorporated his spinning piledriver in turn.

I know I’m late but…

…Where did this get pulled from? The only people who don’t HATE Haggar are Final Fight fans…

Regardless we don’t know everything about the guy. I agree that he has potential to be shit but we shouldn’t be using Gief as a base to judge that on, the reason they used Haggar at all was to have the Gief mold but be able to change it up to be viable (and he’s definitely already better than Gief)

Also after he gives Shulk an abortion it looks like he throws a pipe (It bounces out of his hand and bounces off of the ground? I dunno if it was a weird projectile or a weird attack)

I’m thinking it’s just what happens if you whiff whatever attack the pipe is mapped to.

He may very welll end up being the worse in the game, but that doesn’t mean much if MvC3 turns out to be relatively balanced. As long as he has some tools to be competitive then I’ll play him. I very much doubt that the bottom tier in MvC3 will be as dismal as that in MvC2.

Any of you planning to play him on point? If so are you trying to design a team around him? I don’t plan on putting on point at all, but having him as an assist / DHC option instead. I’m thinking Spencer / Haggar / ??? so far. Assuming Haggar has lariat and/or dashing grab as assists, then they should both be good options. I don’t think he’ll have much too trouble DHCing from Spencer, and Spencer’s ranged grab assist should benefit Haggar whenever he’s in. For the last slot I will probably use Taskmaster if the rumors about his movelist are true.

I was thinking that exact team Bronze but with Arthur as the third character. With that first grab Haggar does looking quite fast and ranged, he could potentially combo with Arthur daggers hitting at the end, and go straight to that grab to end the combo. His air>ground>air>throw combo seemed rather radical as well.

I was hoping he would have a hyper that could be done in the air (and he very well could but it doesn’t appear that way at the time)

Not yet. Know his lariat will probably be his go to assist for most. His gameplay looked kinda fun.

Hoping he gets his AA piledriver as an assist. Could be easy way to set up some good combos. Thinking his lariat would be good if is an assist for keepaway characters. AA piledriver for rushdown.

Team around him just fill the screen up and hide his approach for point seems best source. Or some type of assist that forces the opponent to block, create that lockdown baby.

Dear Gif Making Gods,

If anyone can create or find a .gif of Haggar’s Abortion/Punch you in the baby super I would be forever grateful.

Thanks,
SHPLIG

I will definitely be using Haggar, regardless of how good/bad he is. I’m a huge Final Fight fan and Haggar is one of my all time favourite characters.
Ideally I would like to play him on point but I’m just gonna wait until the game is out to be picking my teams and whatnot.

I’ve not read the whole thread so I don’t know if this has been discussed but I want to say I’m sort of dissapointed in his theme. It’s awesome, but I think they could have remixed something else other than Metro City Slums. That’s Guy’s theme.

The obvious choice would have been his theme from the Slam Masters series

I personally would have gone for the music that plays when you cagefight the Andores in Final Fight

Anyway, I’m just glad the Mayor is finally in a new game.

I was hoping for that so bad, especially this version:

Then it’s probably like Viper’s focus attack and has full (or mostly) invincibility.

Man, it’s been such a while I can’t remember the year exactly. Maybe 1999 was when Madman’s Cafe starting doing those silhouette teasers. Fun times.

As said before, Haggar isn’t Gief. The only one real unique move they have is Lariat, and I still think Haggar’s, even with it depleting health, is better than Gief’s if it’s fully invincible.

And regarding VS series grapplers in general, gameplay engine considerations aside, the major difference is Haggar’s running grab. There isn’t a single character in any VS game that had a move like that much speed and range. Not Colossus and certainly not Gief. Plus going from the vid, it will lead to 50% after the launch. That’s pretty damned huge. Unanswered questions are what it looks like on whiff, what’s it like on block, and can it even be blocked in the first place.

Looking at the stream from last night, I think MvC3’s answer to balancing the brawlers/grapplers is a tad different from how most of the other VS series games handled (which is that they didn’t). At least with regards to Hulk /Thor, the brawlers now do MASSIVE damage. I seriously can’t recall the last time in the VS that I was actually worried to let one of the brawlers touch me, save for a XvSF Gief SPD or a MvC2 Colossus or glitched Juggy.

It makes for an actual 2D zoning dynamic, as opposed to the “who gives a shit” aspect of MvC2 rush-and-or-zone with regards to big characters.

Nah, I’d bet money that it just does damage to himself. It’s how the FF Lariat, just like every old school beat-em up “clear out” hit-all-the-buttons move worked. However, the other properties those “clear out” hit-all-the-buttons moves had were they were completely invincible. And that is the other property I’m waiting to hear about Haggar Lariat.

But really, I’ve never played in an arcade ever; I’m 14 years old and all I know about Haggar is that I saw a picture of him piledriving a shark and that he is the Mayor of the World or something.

Eh, maybe. His damage is ok, but to be perfectly honestly, I really expected more from a brawler. CapA seems to do more damage. I’m still waiting to hear about the properties of running grab, and if he has any resets or anything.

Otherwise, I’d just use him for a (hopefully) invincible Lariat.
