The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

I totally agree they shouldn’t have lost the chance to include an Argentine character to the cast. But seriously, I don’t recall any change in his nationality. When did they change it?

That’s German. A Swedish equivalent would be Ludvig.

It’s nähase, and the ä in Amharic is a schwa, as the a of English “about”. But nähase isn’t August, because it’s the name of the Ethiopian calendar month that starts in August 7 and ends with September 5. Should an Ethiopian refer to August, he’d use ኦገስት, aka ʾogäst, a direct transliteration from English. Even Oromo language can’t help Capcom, as August is hagayya. Good luck trying with the other 86 languages of Ethiopia…

A better one would be Laurent.
And “Schugerg” doesn’t exist in German (the closest surname is “Schugel”): it’s actually a reference to Dr.Heinrich Schugerg, a nazi mad scientist from comedy manga Patalliro!, who founded the shady organization Tarantula to, needless to say, conquer the World. Patalliro! was chock full of ridiculous made-up European names, designed to SOUND like they were from a Western language.

When they published his article, literally under our nose.

Can I just take a moment and say, that I’m loving all the diverse information sources we have now to clear up things? I think this is the best rendition of this thread now since we have so many collaborators.

It’s still a very small portion of their overall population though. While seemingly the majority of Brazilian characters in SF have Japanese ancestry.

This thread is Canon Heaven. If you’re a fan of the SF story, there’s just so much to gain in this thread and the guide. Great time to be a SF fan.

I wholeheartedly agree. As someone who has been following the story threads since the beginning of my time here, I can say undoubtedly that this is the best time in the history of story threads in SRK. We have such a wide variety of amazingly well informed and opinionated contributors. Our sources of information have never been as fruitful, elaborate, and credible as they have been today.

Maybe this is the old geezer in me talking, but I really am so proud of how far our discussions and users have come. Even in our disagreements, we’re thoughtful and open.

This is really the best place to talk about the SF canon on the Internet right now.

Aprile dislikes animals as well. Those two are bitter enemies.

Thank god now at least we can make sure this thread is properly archived in a form of the new plot guide by @bakfromon

The previous thread had a lot of golden info inside as well, and is forever lost to the history…

That’d actually make sense, sadly, given Italy’s shameful annexation of Ethiopia from 1936 to 1941. The whole thing is starting to sound dreadfully like HETALIA…

Sean and Laura are half Japanese.

Something tells me Capcom doesn’t see it that way

Honestly, this reinvigoration/rebirth of the story-discussion is the first time I’ve felt like I’m not just the “crazy guy” of the thread challenging things and being thought of as a troll. So…that’s really cool.

It’s great to see people able to voice different opinions and actually have those opinions discussed and weighed. It’s actual discourse…and that’s pretty cool.

You guys are all a buncha nerds!

Women do like intelligence… :coffee:

In capcom’s eyes everyone is part asian. Hell ryu’s part american.

As Thang Tam/Santamu is from Ethiopia now, then I wish Capcom would have gone all the way and changed her Doll codename to reflect the new nationality! There’s no point in keeping the Vietnamese word for August now.

.

Its Capcom, they shit on all forms of simple logic imaginable. It’s cool they’re respecting the creators original intentions and all, but if it really was his original intention then I wonder how something like the nationality gets changed so drastically for just one obscure Doll?

It would’ve been simpler just to keep it Vietnamese with the messed up transliterated name.

Just a day after I give them kudos for somewhat explaining Juli’s connection with Mexico and the Thunderfoot tribe they go and confuse the issue with Santamu’s nationality and name which were completely fine to begin with (save for the bad translation).
