I always thought since Necro’s Slam Dance was once of his featured Super Arts in SF3TS that he had some background in wrestling to be able to pull off multiple suplexes, and even though Gill and Urien use Pankration the style itself encompasses wrestling so they naturally have techniques such as clothesline lariats and power bomb slams.
The original profiles had actual birth years. Later, they abandoned the years and the games seem to be on a floating timeline now. (I.e. SF4 obviously doesn’t play in the 90s anymore (modern computers etc.), while in SF2 the Soviet Union was still intact and “Final Fight” was even explicitly set in 1989 by the game’s intro.)
But I’m pretty positive that the relative gap between each fighers’ ages is still intact.
I don’t know dude, it’s SF, they fucking love suplexes XD
Also i ever seen it as a good way for them to emphatize his elastic body
If i must pick two ispiration for him i will say probably the hardcore/gabber/techno rave 90s culture here in europe, and probably Chernobyl 1986 nuclear disaster in Russia, with the whole radioactivity mutation thing.
Tbh i ever thought this was the real inspiration behind Necro’s design (wich also explain the choice of name, as Necro is related to death), with the whole laboratory experiment story being a waaay less controversial approach
About Urien i hope they redesign his grappling to look more ancient wrestling, imagine something like a not oiled-goofy version of Hakan throws done with Necalli’s brutality… basically smashing heads and breaking backs mad Heracles style
I feel they’ve, in general, moved away from characters inspired by real world martial artists / actors / characters and giving them a unique twist on them based on the creators views of those things. There is speculation that Angelina Jolie was the inspiration for C Viper, but that’s about it that I know of. I dunno why, but I kind of miss that. I feel like it gave insight into what the creators liked and were fans of.
Sometimes it even had bearing on the plot, for better or worse.
She definitely looked like AJ in Mr. and Mrs. Smith and Tomb Raider
that artwork show it as well
Then they probably took ideas also from Sharon (SFEX) and D.D. (CFAS) design
At the end for japanese designers hollywood movies are a good starting point to get ideas for a western characters, it help the designer get a grip on western tastes
There are many characters in SF that take inspiration from one or often multiple famous western peoples, often mixed with manga/anime characters, some are kinda fun too as peoples never mention them but are kinda clear
It’s not the point that they love suplexes, Im trying to say that whatever basic techniques they’re using show off what type of fighting backgrounds they have. If Ryu or Honda were to use suplexes for throws I would say they have backgrounds in wrestling, but one uses Judo throws and the other uses Sumo, which I would expect because that’s what is inherent to thier styles. Any type of Suplex as well as Powerbomb would require some background knowledge of wrestling, otherwise you might break your own back pulling off the maneuvers. The suplex isn’t just a really flashy looking wrestling move that Capcom loves, a lot of the character have a background in wrestling of some type (being it’s a common grappling style) whether it be Guile, Cammy, Vega, or even Necro, who mix into their over style. Then you have characters who strictly rely on wrestling like Zangief, but because Necro has an undefined style I thought it would be safe to assume he has some background knowledge in some wrestling for grappling attacks, and some boxing for striking, filling in the gaps with his mutations.
Although beside that fact I agree with you about making Urien’s style a bit more savage and brutal like ancient Pankration is described to be. Granted I’ve always loved the animation for his and Gill’s sitting Power Bomb grab.
Theory time! Before his mutation into Necro, the Russian boy named Illia was a fan of Zangief. Given that Zangief is practically a national hero in the Street Fighter universe, this wouldn’t be impossible. We don’t really know when he was mutated, but he could have been human during the Alpha/SF2 era.
I really hope we get Necro back. He wouldn’t be escaping from captivity (that happens in 2I/3S), but he would be an agent of the Illuminati. This isn’t to say Necro should have the personality of Decapre; he can keep his deadpan nature and humor to basically be the Deadpool of Street Fighter.
Balrog is a perfect example of a “wall” for lesser world warriors. He’s the guy that’s got enough raw power and ferocity that, if you run into him, and you aren’t technically sound enough, he will DEMOLISH you because he really has to only hit you a couple times for it to be over.
If you have technique on your side though? 'Rog only has a punchers chance at that point and he can be beat easily.
Simply, Evander Holyfield in his prime > Mike Tyson in his prime. Dudley > Balrog.
As for redesigning Urien…
I want his look to remain the same but I agree that I would LOVE if his stuff looks even more brutal. He should clearly EFFORTLESSLY be lifting and smashing people. It should be made painfully (literally) obvious that he is leagues beyond normal human strength. Also he if DOESN’T have a tailored Armani suit as an alt outfit PEOPLE WILL DIE
Somebody should take Bakformon’s BIO translations and make a video series out of them, one character per video. This stuff needs to be spread wider than a forum post or a pastebin storage
Eh, I dig it. Udon killed off Gouken waaay before SF4 decided to bring him back, so naturally things diverged. I don’t mind this or most of the Udon works. It’s not perfect, but eh, it’s enjoyable to me and nowhere as horrible as the Malibu comics SF stuff.
Ooh, digging this. I’ve recently become a fan of Necro and Effie so I like this. If anything, it could be a source of conflict for Illia. He hates being stuck in that small space he grew up in, but loves Zangief. He wants to emulate him, and get strong, travel the world and fight things off in foreign lands like his hero.
One of the things that struck me about Necro is that despite his tragic fate, he’s still pretty funny. When I was doing research for quotes for my Sf voice reel (in my sig! --Shameless plug) I was surprised by all the smack talk and fun he would occasionally have. IF they bring him back for SF5, I’d like to see elements of this in him.
The Deapool comparison works well too; disfigured and using humour and sarcasm to cover up the pain and self loathing. Also, stealing again from Deadpool I had an idea. It would be interesting if initially Illia wasn’t made into Necro, but it either came from complications to super soldier treatments or it was punishment after a mission went wrong in his rookie days. Could really add to his tragedy - he finally made it out of his village, got drafted into a powerful group, was given an opportunity to feel some real power, but things quickly overwhlemed him and he became a caged puppet of those he once considered saviours.
I am HUNGRY for a team up, a few of us could gather these, add some narration and visuals to hold audience attention, and BAM we could really get the information out there to educate the masses! Good idea dude!
Same, unfortunately. I’m going to start posting the pastebin throughout more forums and places like Eventhubs to try and get more people interested. I know a lot of people will be quick to say “Lol, no one cares about story”, but I don’t give a shit.
I see bak is pretty much finished with the main characters, so I think it’s about time I post more bios for him to save for later translations.
Lifts hands I can video edit and my main tricks of trade is voice acting. If someone teamed up with me and they functioned as a leader and/or lead coordinator to give the project some direction, that could be awesome.
Don’t wanna derail the thread, I apologize, but here’s some stuff I’ve done across youtube. Think of it as a little resume:
I nominate @Shockdingo to narrate a SF plot documentary.
Yea I love this theory it was actually what I was thinking. I would even go further and have him being a fan of both Zangief and Zalazof from Slammasters.
@“Doctrine Dark” Thanks for the new info I really couldn’t be doing all of this without these scans, and I thank everyone for the encouragement and support. I know most people scoff at the idea of story or plot in fighting games, especially in a series like SF (when there’s so many other less tedious well rounded gaming stories even within the FG genre). Although given there has been some form of SF plot discussion across multiple boards from as far back as I can remember, and with the recent emergence of new novels, live action series, and even a story mode. It’s pretty clear that plot has been and continues to be a profound topic between fans because the characters are so iconic. Being that all the info your getting is just a few paragraphs of story over the course of decades, and you can compile a pretty clear guide off just that alone, although with just that we’re barely even scratching the surface of detail.
Anyways I regress from my ranting now that I have…
Vega was not a member of Shadaloo during SFA3? That’s new! o_O
Also… was it always that Vega was born to an ugly father and a beautiful mother? I thought he was born to beautiful parents but something happened to his noble father and his mother, now broke, remarried the ugly-but-rich guy? Or am I mixing that up with something else?
re: Rufus
Rufus weighs like 400 lbs but can leap nine feet in there air and is unbelievably fast. He’s at least as superhuman as Zangief, if not more so. He also clearly has superhuman observation skills a la Sakura is he can learn techniques by watching movies (that he calls his martial art by the wrong name has no bearing on the fact that he can perform said techniques).
I think we just have to accept that Street Fighter, like most anime-based/inspired sources, follows One Piece rules when it comes to strength and abilities (i.e. with sufficient training, anyone can become superhuman, but the majority of people are not, so even the “weakest” of trained fighters are still leagues ahead of ordinary people).
Actually, I should be thanking you, bak, for your dedication to getting all of these translations done. I know it takes a good amount of time, but just know we really appreciate you taking the time to put together a nice translation for us to read. Also, if there’s ever a scan that happens to be a bit too blurry or tough to read, just let me know and I’ll be sure to re-scan it quickly. Keep on being awesome!
More stuff to share. In the previous post, I highlighted a few of the Final Fight characters. Here’s the remaining few along with a few other characters I nearly forgot about.
