Seriously. I also like a lot of the pictures…but that doesn’t mean I’d also say the level of quality is very high. Those are two very separate things. I straight-up love some of the images adn their composition…I just find the work ethic of them to be very sloppy.
So, Karin is collecting data of our most beloved fighters to host a tournament in New York. Now I see what stage is decipted in Rainbow Mika’s character art.
I’d actually be fine with this. For a while I’ve wanted a boss for SF to host the tournament bring things back to the love of the fight and be a decent person while the baddies go and do villainous stuff in the background.
Imo the best detail about the CGI intro is the fact they remembered to include Charlie’s dog tags around his neck as he’s being executed. A minor detail Bengus has somehow managed to let slip out his artwork after SFA.
Ok something I want to know about SnH usage and Mu usage. Ki that’s to be under the influence of SnH is usually presented to be colored purple, and untainted ki is colored blue. With Ryu’s Shinkuu Hadoken this is more than likely the case, but when he uses Metsu it’s colored purple. Akuma’s fireballs are also generally colored purple as are Evil Ryu’s.
This is really presented well in SF4, but what I want to know is; is Ryu taping into both SnH and Mu at the same time during his Metsu Hadoken in SF4?
The reason I ask is because in the SF:TTTB just before Ryu finishes Seth with a Hadoken he is confirmed using Mu, but his Hado is colored purple.
Afterwards he goes into a kata similar to the SF2V Hadoken kata and begins to tap into Mu. This Hadoken is also presented in a purplish hue which even matches Akuma’s
The reason I’m asking this is in general is because in Ryu’s SFV story…
[details=Spoiler]He’s training with Gouken, and even though he uses SnH against him and several others I don’t think Gouken is attempting to “seal” it off.
Instead it seems he’s using it as a learning experience for him, so in time he’ll learn to suppress on his own. Instead of trying to purge it all out, Ryu wants to learn all he can from it so he wont have fear from it.
What I want to know is by suppressing SnH is Ryu able still to maintain full reign over that energy but not succumb to it effects?
Instead of being consumed by the will of ones own energy, with Mu you have full range of control on whether your energy is lethal or not. [/details]
I wanted to gather my thoughts before I put my 2 cents in about the character stories. However before I delve into the canon lore part of the post, I really just want to get this off my chest.
I can’t help but feel a bittersweet disappointment about the presentation so far. On one my hand I can recognize that Capcom is trying harder, and trying new things this time around. On the other, I can’t escape the idea that what they are presenting me is an after thought. Maybe I’m getting too old or maybe I’m just a sucker for Capcom, but this ‘buy now and get later’ business model irks me.
SF4 launched with 3 trailers, 1 movie, and almost 2 dozen animated clips to help set up the story - Yes, that was all the prologue of SF4. SF5 is launching with promises, mostly. You open the character stories expecting to actually play an arcade mode experience of some sort and instead you are greeted with 2-3 matches fluffed up with a lot of filler and recycled dialogue. Conveniently dodging a lot of what a prologue should be doing (more on this later). But wait, there is the promise of another 2-3 chapters of character stories per character to be released somewhere down the line right there in the menu. There is also the promise of 60+ minute cinematic story in June. So we’re good right? Yeah whatever.
It’s a very strange business model to me for Street Fighter. I actually avoided the beta, and most of the story leaks to preserve the joy of playing my favorite game’s arcade mode when I finally got it. Going through every character and figuring out the stories. Just like old times right? Ugh, I feel so gullible, like almost duped right now knowing that the game didn’t even intend to have any of that at launch. What a waste of misplaced hope and trust on my part.
The character stories/prologues are best described as meager, but are saved by the hope that their subsequent yet-to-be-released chapters will make more sense of their fleeting and simple saturday morning cartoon narratives. The artwork is a mixed bag, efficient and only satisfactory. The small glimpses of in-game animations pre/post fight are badly done, and hopefully not indicative of the quality of animations we will come to see from the cinematic story mode. They didn’t even bother to sync the dialogue with the lips of the characters, which is like fingernails scraping a chalkboard for the eyes.
I’ve always felt that if you’re gonna bother doing something, either do it the right way, or don’t do it at all. It maybe is a bit too perfectionist of me to say that, but demanding consistent quality shouldn’t be something we shy away from. Especially from a company who has a history of not shying away from asking for our money for the bare minimum effort. Fortunately for me, I am a fan of the game first and foremost, so I will look the other way and enjoy playing the game until all the puzzle pieces of SF5’s story are released.
With that out of the way, let’s get to the actual story… puts on tin foil hat
** WARNING: Long read. Spoilers ahead!**
Spoiler
Ryu
Ryu’s prologue is confusing, and disappointingly revived his struggle with the SNH for another chapter of SF history. We could’ve been done with this shit by SF4 but Capcom love to recycle. In trying to reconcile this prologue with the events of SF4, I came to the conclusion that Ryu’s prologue (the first part) takes place immediately after his confrontation with Gouken (Gouken’s SF4 ending) - But before Gouken’s SSF4 ending.
Basically what happens here is that Ryu and Gouken battle, then Gouken ‘seals away’ the SNH. Ryu drops unconscious, Akuma comes and battles Gouken. Gouken wins. Ryu after regaining consciousness is with Gouken who explains to him that he was ‘nearly consumed by the SNH’. Then out of no where, Rashid comes and wants a fight. Which is retarded in and of itself, but whatever. Ryu later on meets up with Ken. All this however, should take place BEFORE Gouken’s SSF4 ending where Ryu and Ken bid their master goodbye. Granted, this isn’t a perfect fit (why the fuck are they in NEW ZEALAND!) but it is the most coherent explanation I can come up with for now.
This also means that the seal that Gouken applied onto Ryu was never meant to be a permanent one like I and others interpreted previously. Rather, it was a temporary seal meant to subdue Evil Ryu right then and there at the end of SF4 before it was too late.
Nash’s encounter with Ryu is strange. The dialogue could mean one of two things. Either Nash is seeking Ryu because he wants to learn about the SNH, or that Nash himself has obtained his own version of the SNH and has sought out Ryu for answers. Interestingly, both characters seemed evenly match which could be interpreted as them being of near equal fighting power. This doesn’t mean their potentials are the same.
Nash doesn’t have the same color aura one would come to expect of the SNH. It’s really confusing if this is what they meant. Nash’s win quote against Ryu supports the former explanation though, that Nash is in it to know about the SNH, not because he wields it himself.
Nash
I was hoping this prologue would actually explore why Nash who was shot at, impaled by Bison’s hand (See: Bison prologue), and then fell down a waterfall looks like half his body was burned off. His injuries continue to be inconsistent with what we know about his ‘death’. Sadly, we got none of that this time. We didn’t even get a scene with Charlie shocked by his appearance. Real missed opportunity here.
What we did get is a Helen character with the star of Bethlehem-like emblem, that represents a ‘we’ who found and resuscitated Charlie. Seriously, Capcom. What’s the point of keeping it secret til now? Oh yes, Nash has 2 more prologue chapters to go. Moving on.
It’s great that Nash at least acknowledges the betrayal of his superiors so openly now.
Helen not knowing where Bison is. Not buying it. From other prologues, it seems everyone and their mother know where Bison and his base are. Viper was in Bison’s base and she also casually has GPS coordinates to fucking Ryu and you can’t find Bison?! Something’s up. Note that it was not revealed to us what is the help that Helen is asking of Nash. Nash helps her with something and in return she will help lead him to Bison. I don’t think Nash realizes just how manipulated he is right now. A pawn to the grave.
Regarding Ed. What an annoying teenager. Anyway as stated before by others, this boy is clearly Bandaged Boy from SF4. It isn’t clear if Balrog retrieved the boy for Shadaloo (where the boy is being raised right now) or for some other purpose. FANG seems pissed at Balrog for something, what is it? Is Balrog responsible for Ed being out and about in India? Or did Balrog break a bigger rule involving the kid. I’m also not 100% sure that Ed is aging at an accelerated rate. In SF4, he looked like he could be at least 7-8 and 10-12 at most. So if he is 13-14 in Nash’s prologue, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that big of a jump. And no, Ed is not Eisbahn. Please stop with Eisbahn, people.
My prediction for Ed is what it has always been. He is going to be Bison’s replacement body when the shit hits the fan. The heroes might feel okay about taking out the cyborg human incubators, but they will overlook a child like Ed. Evil always hides where you least expect it…
The last shot of present day Guile meeting present day Nash makes no sense to me now.
Oh and did you manage to catch Rose? She makes a cameo appearance as the Joker card in the first slide.
Ken
Not much is happening here relative to the main arc. Most interesting is the presence of Mel. Mel looks to be at around 1 years old, but Mel also says ‘daddy’ very clearly. Babies usually talk at 18 months, so Mel would likely have to be at least 18 months old in Ken’s prologue. If this timing is correct, then the events of SF5 are smack in the middle between SF4 and SF3. Making the events of SF3:NG another 18 months away at least approximately.
Ken looks great in a suit btw. He’s still totally gay on the down-low for Ryu too. He just can’t stop talking about him to Eliza. True love. <3
Chun-Li
Given her uniform, her fight with Vega and her meeting with Guile would have to take place before her Alpha 2 ending. The retcon here though is that it was Bison who told Chun-Li about her father’s death, not Vega. It’s harmless, but it takes away from Chun-Li’s relationship with Bison and buffs hers with Vega. They literally copied her Alpha 2 ending almost exactly, by having Vega fly off like Bison and telling Chun-Li they will meet again.
This retcon wasn’t needed at all, as Chun-Li’s A2 arcade mode relates to us this entire story much better than her SF5 prologue does. This is the kind of recycling that is not needed in the series. Granted, that I like Vega and Chun-Li have better and more interaction, this isn’t the way it should be handled IMO.
Anyway, OMG LI-FEN! So cute! :lovin:
Rashid
Really interesting prologue with a lot of cool stuff happening. The text messages were a great touch. One of the messengers is clearly Dan. The other ‘honeysunnygilley’ has an ‘ice’ or cold element symbol next to their name (EISBAHN! AH!). There was Poison (pink hair), Abel (dog), and ‘Effiepurpnight’ is obviously Crimson Viper as her icon is a reddish snake.
Azam is awesome (although I have no idea why he is wearing a bindi when he is Arabic).
‘The Package’ looks like a ‘key’ of some sort. Probably to activate Bison’s doom machine.
The friend Rashid is looking for is NOT Viper contrary to what people have been saying. Viper is messaging Rashid in real time during his prologue (‘Maya’). Who like I said earlier sends coordinates to Ryu but conveniently leaves out really important ones like coordinates to the greatest known threat to the planet right now. She should die for her incompetence.
Rashid’s friend is ‘eyepuzzledyourmom’ on his phone. Their last text message was about how things got really messy and they should postpone their plans. Rashid’s friend has a green avatar of what looks like a boy. We know that he/she were working with SIN before they went missing and we know from Viper (Bison’s prologue) that Shadaloo kidnapped SIN researchers. We’ll know soon enough why though.
Because of Rashid’s encounter with Ryu, I’m inclined to believe that his prologue starts during the time of the SF4 events. His friend goes missing as the collapse of SIN happens (‘things get messy’), then 12 days later he gets a message from Viper with Ryu’s coordinates. Which as I said above places that encounter sometime between Gouken’s SF4 and SSF4 endings.
Dhalsim
The interaction between Sim and Oro is gold. The comparison between their philosophies, their mutual respect, and friendliness. Just gold. THANK YOU CAPCOM!
Who is Oro sensing though? Necalli? Karin? Ryu? To be continued.
Cammy
This one likely starts off soon after the events of SF4. This is because Birdie is still with Shadaloo, which he isn’t in the ‘present timeline’ (Approx. 18 months later).
What’s boggling here is how the fuck does Cammy know where Shadaloo’s base is that she so casually goes there to fight FANG. I get suspension of disbelief but this is fucking ridiculous.
What is operation CHAINS? Wtf could that possibly be an acronym for, Capcom? More on this later.
I love Cammy here by the way. I love that she is unsure if what she is doing is the right thing, because of the after effects of leaving Bison’s brainwashing. Her love and responsibility towards her ‘sisters’ comes off as genuine. Her interaction with Juni especially is a nice touch (not referring to the homoeroticism you pervert!). Hopefully, Juli who was catatonic when we last saw her is also doing well.
I also like how Shadaloo is unrelenting in their pursuit of these girls. They just won’t let them be. It’s really twisted, or these dolls must be really valuable/powerful to their organization/Bison.
JURIIIII!!! Digging her new bond villain appearance. But what happened to FSE? I guess she doesn’t have it inserted all the time and this must be her time off. The symbol on her eye patch is very similar to the SIN emblem. CEO Juri?
Birdie
Starts off sometime during or soon after SF4’s events. We can tell because FANG has already been hired.
Why did Birdie leave Shadaloo? Over food that’s what… Ugh, never change Capcom…
Karin
She’s turning into a Mary Sue type character and I haven’t decided if I like it or not. I like that she is a perfectionist, and in particular I like that she is becoming the Bruce Wayne (Shibasaki = Alfred) of the SF universe. However, I wish she was more of a bitch, more flawed. She’s too perfect.
Oro, at the approximate age of 38, was locked in a fight with Karin’s grandfather for 3 days. This was 100 years before SF5. Now Karin wants to fight him. Oro DLC S2 confirmed.
“MUSCLE!!!” - Zangief. 'Nuff said.
Sakura. Yes, that’s probably how she looks like in the present time of SF5. SHAME ON YOU CAPCOM!!! WHERE IS MY ADULTHOOD?!!!
Laura
Sean, lol?!
Rainbow Mika
Ibuki confirmed DLC! Oh wait never mind…
Zangief
“Your muscles are amazing in person” - Rashid.
Necalli
What the fuck is a character like this doing in Street Fighter? Seriously. Every few hundred years he wakes up to eat people then go back to sleep again. His existence is so completely random to the story, he makes no sense thus far. The prologue gives us NOTHING to work with. He’s Akuma without his discipline and style. He’s a Pillar Man with none of their grace, sophistication, and fabulousness (not to mention their kickass theme). What’s the point of this thing?
Was he human before this? Is the SNH involved at all like was said by Matt Edwards months ago? He has the ‘red power’ it seems. The fan stories of him being an Aztec warrior with a killing intent because of their culture is far superior to this crap we’re being fed.
So he’s awoken, to eat Ryu, Sim, and Bison. We know this isn’t going to happen. Maybe Capcom will have him eat Bison for a game or two, but no way this guy’s plot of killing 3 of the most iconic Street Fighters is going to take place.
What a tragically missed opportunity he seems to be so far.
At least the Warrior Prophet was nice, and he respectfully recognized Bison as the force of absolute destruction. Which coincidentally is the way Ryu describes the SNH.
Still if Necalli is prophecized to consume Bison, and Bison considers Necalli as part of his plan. What the fuck is going on here. Still intrigued, I am.
Vega
First I gotta say that Vega’s voice actor is brilliant, and makes the character so very quotable. Every. Single. Time.
Vega seems to have some issue with the Doll program. I believe it is because they are brainwashed and emotionally flat. Vega is a sadist, and loves to bring out the pain and suffering in people. He finds beauty in this suffering. So the Dolls to him are ugly, in contrast to Cammy who he sees as very beautiful.
The detail about Vega sparing Cammy’s life during the Alpha era is intact.
FANG is Shadaloo’s self-proclaimed second in command, but Vega doesn’t take him particularly seriously.
Juni is referred to as 006. Likely a reference to her place in the yearly calendar (June), this makes Juli our very own 007. Yay!
Vega is a very twisted and demented man. I LOVE his portrayal so far. It’s perfect, especially the way he plots to psychologically torture Cammy. Truly sick and sadistic. Love him.
FANG
FANG and his cartel allied with Shadaloo likely during or soon after the events of SF4. Which makes him a relatively new member of the organization (no more than 2 years old).
‘Vassalage’. Yeah. That is all.
The NguuHao is an awesome name. Too bad they are all dead. It seems like they were like the Sith from Star Wars, where each generation becomes stronger by virtue of besting their predecessor.
Bison’s explanation for his leadership philosophy was much needed. We never understood how Bison could tolerate having the likes of Balrog, Juri, and others among his ranks. Here, Bison explains very clearly that as long as you are strong and are of use to Shadaloo, you will survive. He cares for nothing else. It’s a brutal and sort of Darwinian outlook, but it is honest and pure. It ensures that Bison and his order is always made up of only the strongest. Whatta man. No wonder FANG is infatuated with him.
FANG is a brilliant new character. I feel like a complete hypocrite saying this considering how much I was taken back by and mocked him when he was first introduced. However, FANG is exactly the villainous character the SF narrative needed. A character that is absolutely loyal to Bison and his world view, someone who actually LOVES the work he is doing and isn’t involved with Shadaloo out of greed. FANG is a refreshing contrast to Vega and Balrog. I now doubt that FANG will betray Bison down the line, in fact - he may be the only character who won’t.
Master Bison
I couldn’t help but feel disappointed by this one. They basically recycled one fight from Nash, and one fight from FANG, and had Viper - a character who is NOT in the game narrate most of it. It was a terrible missed opportunity to learn more about this GREAT MAN.
We could’ve learned more about his past, Rose, Psycho Power, essence transfer, human incubators and cloning, the end of SF2, and what motivates him to be so damn awesome. Nothing. We didn’t even get an explanation to why Bison has aged what looks like 5 years in the time frame of 1. We get a complete and utter recycle job, and some random acronyms like AS, CHAINS, and PSAs. MEANINGLESS!
The best part about Bison came from FANG’s prologue when he single handledly obliterated an entire clan of poison assassins. He was beyond human there! Why couldn’t he be that way in his own story mode? Have you no shame Capcom?
The song that plays when Bison and Nash first encounter here is awesome. THIS should’ve been his theme, not the shit we got.
Bison actually did not use his story mode costume at any point during the prologues. This makes me think that this costume is for the cinematic story mode rather than the prologues (or maybe later chapters? He has 2 more). Additionally, Bison appeared with white hair during his flashback fights with Nash. Another missed opportunity by lazy Capcom. You could’ve given him his Alpha costume with cape like the rest of the bloody cast!
About those acronyms. AS? CHAINS? PSA? WTF? PSA is maybe Psycho Star/Solar/Satellite/Sphere A-something. I just can’t with you Capcom. Why? WHY?!
I’m gonna go out on a limb here and guess that since Shadaloo stole SIN’s research and researchers, that PSAs are an evolution of the BLECE project (super chi-bombs). It seems Bison’s end game is very simple, total annihilation. He wants to plunge the world into fear and darkness to feed off the negative energy and become a god. He doesn’t care for domination, so much as destruction. The end of all things.* I approve. *
“A plan to conquer the world? As I thought” - Viper. NO SHIT! You came up with that one all by yourself, girl? Wow.
There is no real tl;dr, so if you actually bothered to read all of that. Thank you, I appreciate it.
My final thoughts on the character prologues is that the bulk of them takes place during the aftermath of SF4, up until the present time which I calculated would start at around a year and half after.
In the present of SF5, Karin is about to host a tournament, and everyone else is probably invited. Necalli just woke up and he’s hungry af, and Bison is about to unleash hell on Earth (for no particular reason other than he is an evil megalomaniac). This is basically where we’re gonna kick off.
The character stories are divided up in chapters, some characters have 3 and others have 4. I’m not sure what this means, but perhaps those with 4 chapters will have chapters after the cinematic story mode. Implying that those with 3, will finish with the cinematic story. Or it could just mean that Capcom ran out of things to recycle. We’ll know soon enough.
Oh and this guy (‘Skullface’) needs to be a character.
[details=Spoiler]I think you’re being a bit too dismissive with some of these character stories, like Rashid and Laura. Give them more of a chance. I also think you’re jumping the gun with your views and interpretation of Necalli’s story. He’s not like Aluma at all besides being powerful and possibly tied to the SnH. Also, SF has long since delved into supernatural and mysticism; he isn’t out of place at all.
Other than the above, good write up. I don’t think Oro was sending Ryu or Karin, as the latter wasn’t in India until a few days later as evidenced in Sim’s story and the former probably won’t meet him just yet.[/details]
Rashid: I didn’t dismiss his character story, I was actually complimentary of it.
Laura: I never liked the character, she was always too much of a fanservice for me. I hoped her story would change that, and it didn’t. She’s just there.
Necalli: How am I jumping the gun here? Akuma is a character who broke and redefined SF power level records and just wanted to fight strong opponents or die trying. Necalli is essentially the same idea but on an even larger scale, with the added bonus of him actually be an eternal and eternally insatiable T-1000. This is a REALLY out there concept for the series anyway you cut it, made worse by the fact that no explanation is given for the source of this power. I won’t be surprised if they connect him to Ingrid at this point, because he’s like a Pandora’s box incarnate and only something as stupid as Ingrid could make sense of him. Maybe.
Mysticism, magic, and the supernatural in the SF universe always seemed to stem from human beings who sought to and acquired them through sheer training and discipline, or through science and technology. The SF characters tended to always be down to earth in this respect compared to other supernatural characters in other games. Based on what we know, Necalli is breaking this unsaid rule. He’s mythical far more than man. He’s still not Ingrid levels of retard though, but he is definitely Oni levels of retard. Hopefully if Capcom decides to flesh out his backstory more, he will become more relatable.
Wooah…!!!.. I’m honestly not gonna tackle a lot of this but I wanted to point out a few things, hopefully make it a bit simpler as well.
[details=Spoiler]First off I think the beginning of Ryu’s prologue is set AFTER SF4 and SSF4 completely. Gouken and Ken imply they’ve been keeping touch with one another, and in Gouken’s SSF4 ending it implies Ken wants to see Gouken again before he departs. It would seem kinda odd to be frantically chasing after someone to say goodbye if you’re already keep in touch? So Ryu and Gouken being in New Zealand makes sense if you consider there’s a time gap.
I feel that Gouken maybe training Ryu how he properly master his own SnH at this point and learn everything there is to know about himself in order to conquer it fully and not fear it. This is something Gouken had failed to do when originally teaching Ryu and Ken, but imo since he now sees Ryu struggle with it he wants to lead him on a path similar to his own. Gouken too had learned SnH, and he learned to quell its use through Mu, so I feel instead of putting fear and doubt into Ryu about SnH, he’s putting trust and acceptance that he’ll find the true path just like he did. Which is why he encouraged Ryu’s fight with Rashid, regardless of Ryu’s reservations not to do so and worrying about SnH.
Another thing is I don’t think this sealing thing is supposed to be an actual seal. What Gouken and Akuma mean by Ryu being sealed off from it in SF4 was that Gouken simply had knocked him out at a moment when he was about to succumb to the SnH. With Ryu being unconscious his SnH outburst is sealed.
Addressing Nash I honestly think the best way of interpreting this is that his vengeance has awoken an intent to kill. Nash is not trained in the specific ki use of Hado so he doesn’t tap into that particular energy. One would have to first be trained in use of Hado to unlock the specific attributes of SnH. Imo he is trained in Qigong like Chun li (both energies are similar but not the same which explains aura colors), but this strays from my point.
Because Nash wants to kill Bison, he searches for Ryu to see if he can manage drawing out his SnH. Ryu’s Hado can feel intent, and the SnH will usually manifest itself in the face of another malicious intent (something Ryu is training to keep under wraps).
Nash meets Ryu and his suspicions are correct, his ki matches his intent to kill Bison.[/details]
There are two reasons why I think the Ryu/Gouken part of the prologue is set in the aftermath of SF4.
The first one is the obvious one I mentioned about Ryu bidding Gouken goodbye. We also don’t know how much time passed between Gouken’s epilogues in SF4 and the destruction of the SIN base which Ryu was a part of. But the next reason will give you a clue.
Rashid’s missing friend was working with SIN before he/she went missing. This friend sent a message to Rashid at least 12 days before his meeting with Ryu and Gouken. In the message, Rashid’s friend says that 'things are getting messy" and they want to reschedule.
This timing coincides with the collapse of SIN at the end of SF4. If Rashid meets Ryu 12 days after the collapse of SIN, then it makes sense for Gouken’s SF4 endings to be happening at around that timeframe as well. Capcom would not give us dates like that for no reason IMO. We don’t know how much time Ryu and Gouken actually spent together, before they said goodbye as well. It probably was weeks or months between Gouken’s SF4 ending and Gouken’s SSF4 ending.
I also personally wouldn’t pay too much attention to the ‘stage settings’ that Capcom keep changing left and right.
I agree with you about the seal part, but usually people use terms like ‘seal’ as part of magical bindings that are meant to seal powers away. So it is easy to see why some of us misinterpreted the language used by Capcom. I now think it was basically a move Gouken did to subdue the SNH and knock Ryu out before a full blown takeover.
Thanks for clarifying on Nash, that makes more sense than the prologue. Especially in light of Nash’s statement that him and Ryu are not after the same thing in response to Ryu trying to suppress his killing intent.
Ono recently said that his dream crossover game is SF vs DBZ. In light of this statement, characters like Oni and Necalli make more sense. Necalli has a lot in common with Pillar Men, but he’s no where near as fabulous. Gill and Urien are closer to the Pillar Men in this respect.
