The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

SF2 was originally bark blonde or dirty blonde

I think both hair colors suits Vega, but considering his nationality, it will be more ‘natural’ to be brown or darker. (It’s not that there are no blond Spanish people, it just not the ‘standard’).

Tbh i will be epic satisfied with SF2AM art direction

SFV engine itself is good, it fail victim of some/many art direction bad choices and some terrible 3D modellers

I was speaking about straight ingame result

SF3 got blue/black hair (and sucked), and sprite limitations had nothing to do with it, it was about SF3 style being SF on acids

SF4 Ryu model got dark gray in large majority of stages

Both sucked

Dark brown hair Ryu design > shitty Ryus

SF2 Vega was brown hair ingame, light brown in profile, brown/reddish in artwork

https://vignette4.wikia.nocookie.net/streetfighter/images/7/76/VegaSFII.jpg/revision/latest?cb=20080506063757

And blonde in endings

true, but still

ingame sprite + official ingame profile + artwork(s) > endings

By simple volume

Kinda like in SFV Bengus design Ryu ever with brown-reddish hair, but we know the “official” SFV one got black hair ingame… a designer taking artistic freedom does’nt take over “official” look

Or Kiki will be the greatest evil of our century lol

I’m just saying the blue and gray colors are results of a highlighting effect from a supposed light source hitting his hair. I wouldn’t take it into account to describe an overall hair color, that’s just me tho.

E. Honda has something similar going on in Alpha 3, only about 80% of his hair is navy blue instead of a brighter blue in certain spots.

There something about Mika wearing thick, dorky glasses that just works. Not just in a sexy way, but also, thats how I imagine she looked in high school.

But color #1 Ryu got blue shitty hair regardless of light of the stage, even the ones that absolutely contrast with it

Is just the color they picked for SF3

Plus as proof it was “possible” some alt colors actually got brown hair, just not the official #1 (sadly)

SF3 Ryu got blue hairs not because lights, but because as stylistic choice SF3 wanted exagerated more anime colors to strike the eye

Same reason at begin Gill concept wise was supposed to be white/black skin, but they changed to red/blue because they wanted bright saturated colors

Agree Mika, Chun and Ibuki does indeed work

It is really cute, but I can actually picture that as her highschool look and her current incognito look for when she’s walking around, not wanting to be recognized by fans in public.
Speaking of Mika, do you guys think the blonde hair and blue eyes are the typical “anime effect” or do you think, since she’s a Japanese pro wrestler, the “canon” explanation is she’s dyed her hair, etc like Kana/Asuka in WWE?

I’m not talking about the lighting of stages for SF3, only in SF4 where his hair is a tad bit darker depending on whether or not the stage is well lit, which a majority of them are.

SF3, on the other hand, uses sprites, so back then to give the illusion of a light source hitting his hair (because all the stages used sprites there was no real background lighting) they used those blue hues to make his black hair look like it was reflecting light.

Take Kasumi from SNK for another example

She also has black hair with blue highlights just like Ryu’s default.

Ironically a lot of her artwork has her with blue hair, but her more realistic works have her as I describe.

It’s an effect to make her hair look black and silky while reflecting light.

While I agree it’s a stylistic choice the hair isn’t actually part black and part blue, it’s just black with blue highlights.

I not even know why we are arguing over hair colors lol, lacks of news is ugly =)

Just for the lulz

1- But even if you extract SF4 Ryu 3D model and texture, you see he have no shade of brown in the hairs.
( fun thing, almost all alt colors did https://media.eventhubs.com/images/sf4/outfit_colors_ssf4/ryu_costume_colors_main.jpg )

They gone for a “pale black” color but in SF4/SFxT it sucked and looked dark gray, in Smash they done the same but with much better result

2- I understand it, but if they wanted keep the classic look they could have used brown for reflexes or do a less radical change using a gray/brown or gray reflex.
They gone for the blue because it fit wht they wanted, and as result you got blue head Ryu lol

Say what you want, Chun rocks the school glasses better than anyone.

Rose in a librarian outfit with glasses would make my dick explode.

Of course it’s about anime effect. She’s Naruto sister, remember?

But talking seriously, I guess she is naturally blonde, as much Karin and Maki are. One interesting thing I bet everyone has already realized is that they changed her pupils colors, keeping it only in blue. In Alpha 3, according to the costume, her pupils follow up the color scheme selected.

She has absolutely dyed her hair. Thinking about it, there are three Japanese characters who sport blonde hair, and each of them could have a perfect justification for having dyed it other than “because anime”.
Mika is a pro-wrestler.
Maki was (and in some respects still behaves as) a delinquent. Her “normal” sister had natural hair.
Karin simply does as she pleases, and so did during high school. I just can’t imagine her poor school headmaster trying to say something to her about it… Now that she doesn’t go to school anymore and has earned her position, well…
All other Japanese characters, playable or not, have natural hair.
Honestly, any character with unnatural hair colours in SF can have an explanation other than “anime hair”; a dye (Enero, März), a scientific experiment gone wrong/psycho power effects (Dekabr’), a result of too much SNH¹  (Akuma), a dye/soul power effects² (Rose) or… well, maybe it’s his natural colour (Blanka)
All the others have completely plausible natural hair.

¹ Scottish Natural Heritage?
² Given that she’s practically Lisa-Lisa, well, she has anime hair

Chun in glasses is cute, but Chun in those glasses looks like an old lady

She needs glasses like this:

Except Lisa Lisa’s hair was never as absurd as Rose’s was. In the manga, anime, and the recent video game, Lisa hair behaves pretty normally. Rose’s hair is as anime as it gets, though.

Yes, but Lisa Lisa is an anime character; that was the joke… On the other hand, even Rose’s hair could be explained with a combination of dye (for its colour) and Soul Power’s effect (for the fact it’s constantly levitating).
