The Inevitable Street Fighter V Story Thread: ARCADE EDITION!

And SNK went bankrupt. Despite having inexpensive, for arcades, hardware and quality games like Garou and The Last Blade franchise come out during that time. Meanwhile Namco rode the 3D fighting game wave to immense success and expanded during that time. On the flip side, SNK is still trying to recover from the 2D fighting game crash as we speak. I think I know the point you were trying to make but you undercut it better than I could’ve.

Side note: There is a mind set that 2D content shouldn’t be full price that developed during this time frame. It would be a separate topic but that contributed to the problem. Sony pushed this narrative because the PS1 wasn’t as adept at 2D titles as the Saturn. Ironically, it was also the reason Capcom actively threw heavy support behind Sony’s competitors.

Wasn’t SF3 technically competing with SFA? I mean I was all in on Alpha and had no clue about SF3s existence until much much later (not that it would matter I dont think I would’ve gotten the game).
I think the ratio of a third new and two thirds returning is much more healthy. And I agree, eventually we need to get past the Shadaloo arc, but there’s no reason characters like Cammy or Vega can’t have new things to do. Although there’s no crime in “iconic” characters sitting out a game and returning afterwards as long as its not all of them sitting out.

Pre-order complete.

I agree… BTW, can you please, please, please change your profile pic? I like you better than most of the forum folk, but that profile pic of yours, damn… Whenever I see it, I feel like blocking you. Please, is there a chance for you to change it to something… more appealing? Something that will go along with your kind personality, perhaps? Please, sir. Pretty please?

SNK was the most playful and creative with FGs mechanics that it always managed to steal and gain momentary attention for a while from many Capcom fans because others are easily fancied by those mechanics to believe it is the future of FG gaming.

Then there was KOF with awesome team battle and crossover with bosses like your fighting with deities.Plus the in-game(arcade) based storyline that had more substance. Orochi was something to took attention in the first of his release that time his floating in mid air and the bright light supers.

SNK trying to bring something new will always get the innovation impression thing, but it doesn’t mean it is successful but it indeed help to make those great mechanics that other companies learn to incorporate with their games and even Capcom’s fanbase.

People those times doesn’t really care about balanced, diversity and good game mechanics, they are more into where the crowds is and gameplay mechanics depth isn’t the concern they are more into responsiveness and variety.

The annual continuous multiple, simultaneous and variety FG releases in Neo Geo and competition of FG companies really did managed to affect Capcom. Because of the 2D Fighters market was over saturated with flashy game mechanics to steal momentary attention that did bury Capcom titles like SF3 that is more about depth. It’s like the divide and conquer tactics that made Capcom titles are out numbered by Neo Geo Stuff.

Then there are 3D games… 3D games were assumed by people on that time to be innovation people playing Tekken 2 and Virtua Fighter were the hipsters of the FG arcade scene in our place before other great title like Soul Edge and the flood with meh 3D titles in PSX.

Namco being in the scene was for Tekken 2 for the huge character variety based on popculture and a short period with Tekken 3 then Tag but I don’t believe those really hurt SF3 since Tekken was just interesting with there characters design that time not mechanics. I believe it was Tekken 5 with it’s solid and refined gameplay that mess up even other 2D fighters struggling in that era in the absence of Capcom.

I don’t believe it has a sole problem that cause it’s issues.

Yet I still believe characters selection is the 2nd major problem that cause the fail of SF3 because ALL-STAR titles like KOF and compilation/crossover were a lot those times even SFALPHA(was another crossover title) while the first is the over saturation of 2D fighter market. The last thing that bury SF3 was it’s depth in the time were people usually see every FGs with responsive variety of evasion and defensive gameplay mechanics that works instantly without punishment because people had different mindsets those times. And another thing was the rise of tag team and team battle system in the numerous FG titles that makes every traditional round battle seems outdated, common and boring that even Vampire Savior did a slight change.

Trends, Innovation and Creativity was in a different direction those times.

Piracy in fact played a major role to SNK’s demised I used to see a lot of bootleg cabs in late 90s and I believe that includes the mismanagement of resources and projects also. Capcom was in fact more careful with there project that time while SNK was more of a risk taker.

I really like his new his new moves and previous moves than the always as is Guile.

Shin could have took his place with a mix of his SFA and SFV moveset.

The whole Champion Edition II characters were already on Street Fighter Alpha 3 and Super Street Fighter II X by the time. As well as Street Fighter EX. I don’t think people missed those characters a lot.

And yet, there were still other 2D fighting game franchises that continued to make games during that same period. Weird.

You mean Mortal Kombat and King of Fighters? Those continued because they were the main product of their companies, they couldn’t stop doing it or they would go bankrupt.

Capcom was trying different things by the time, there were still Mega Man games, Resident Evil games, after a few years Devil May Cry would arrive… Another new Street Fighter chapter was too much of an effort to bid for it a lot.

I’m not afraid of Street Fighter’s future knowing that it rests in the hands of wise, considerate men like this:

How could things possibly go wrong?

Dat Psycho Crusher though

All jokes aside, he seems like a genuinely happy guy.

Yeah Ono seems like an awesome guy.

He just has absolute shit taste for the most part and can’t rein in his own goofiness.

Maybe I did…if I was ONLY talking about SNK.

Oh, you mean the games people played instead of playing SF3?

Look, Ono is an AWESOME person. Who makes a lot of questionable design decisions.

Ono did nothing wrong

Looking at Capcom as a whole, I wouldn’t be surprised if a lot of those shit choices were from upper-management moreso than Ono. That’s not to say he has no part in it, but Capcom in general seems to be the bigger issue.

Since Ono is the face of SF, he’s obviously going to take the blame for a lot of the shit that goes on there, though. After reading the story about him nearly being worked to death by Capcom, I get the feeling he’s made to be the fall guy.

I used to be part of a creative department it’s hard specially when your dealing with multiple people and especially bosses. They can conflict each other and some doesn’t really care with humane designs and user design other than profits or other meh priorities that the sad part. You can’t say to them that there choices are going to be a mess, the only thing you could do is give multiple option that include your personal preferences. I don’t blame Ono he could be along with the approval but this is about a team specific duties more likely the responsibility of QAs, UX, Branding Officer and Art Director.

MK spotlight was just being a controversial title because of the digitalization and fad of gore, MK 1-2 aged miserable and very very fast. MK3 was the refined version of gameplay the problem is they join the 3d field bandwagon after other company jump into their fad.

I believe if MK stays the way in MK3 presentation and controls or change the block and run button into more trendy design they might have been like what KOF was latter and last longer.

I don’t even think On is involved with SFV in any way, he’s literally a PR guy now

The only other company you could be referring to is ArcSys. The GG franchise launched at about the same time but it was and still is niche. Despite being available on the much larger PS2, it wasn’t a huge seller. That’s with critical acclaim and competitors cratering(SNK) or simply abandoning the market (Capcom and Midway).

Yep. That too.

He was way more involved with SF4. I know he’s listed as the producer of V, but that’s just a title.

Since were talking about SF design. Honestly I like SFV’s iteration of Ryu than SF4. Yet Sf4 had the better stylized UI than 5 from fonts and gauge.

Agreed, he’s absolutely glowing with joy. I’d love to meet him in person.

Yeah, while I have issues with things here and there, I don’t squarely blame him. As you mentioned, almost getting worked to death and the fact that he wanted SF5 released later but was pushed to have it come out as it did easily convince me that there’s only so much he can do.

Heck, so many things even SF4 he had to fight for to get things rolling, but once they do get rolling, I imagine he’s limited on the operating procedure among other things.

SFV’s art direction is better than SF4 while still being shitty.

Its UI is a fucking abomination
