The Improvement Thread- Next Meeting on Thursday, March 18th- 1st & 3rd Thur Meetings

I drink fresh squeeze bacon juice…If they bottle that up that shit will replace ketchup & hot sauce you dig!

Just had to put that out there.

That’s so fucking wrong…my heart hurts.

I love the part that says, “Each serving is as healthy as real bacon”. At least they’re honest.

Bump.

I’ve been going to the gym for the last few weeks and I’m feeling better than ever. Turning fat to muscle is my ultimate goal, since aiming for a lower weight un realistic with all the muscle mass I already have. Haven’t had soda in a while and I’m hydrated all day long with water or gatorade feels good.

By the end of summer I should have the definition I want so I can finish my tattoo and be able to floss it hahaha

Lookin for people who are down to work out, cuz working out with people adds motivation. I like to push people hard, and would like someone who can push me too.

A light work out for me today (Just did, so I feel relatively good for not being consistent as of late with):

10 minutes at 6MPH (1 mile) Warm-up on a Treadmill
Stretch - Hamstrings, Butterfly, Calves, Quads, Hip Flexer
Circuit Training (30 second rests)
Chest - 50lbs Dumbbells, 3x10 Bench. 30lbs Dumbbells, 2x10 Flies.
Shoulders - 50lbs Dumbbells, 3x10 Shrugs.
Back/Biceps - 45lbs Dumbbells, 3x10 Chain Saws.
Biceps - 25lbs Dumbbells, 3x10 Standing Curls. 2x10 Isolation Curls.
Decline - 45lbs Dumbbells, 4x10 D.Press. 25lbs Dumbbells, 3x10 Flies.
Core - 1x40 Crunches, 2x20 Leg Tosses.
Stretch - 20 minutes (Core/Extremities)

Overall it was a little over an hour.

Sadly, I don’t have much to work with at the Fitness Center we have here (Can’t even work on the Big 3, can only do Bench with Dumbbells), but in the end it’s a good work out.

I haven’t eaten anything yet today, so now it’s time to grub a little bit and keep my calorie intake below 800 considering it’s so late already.

pZ!

Is someomne going to tell Tanaka to cLL ME OR DO I HAVE TO START SLAYING BITCHES??? ~~~~~~253/414\1836-O^%

I texted Tanaka for you, and gave him your number. But I want to say he works early (6am) so he might be asleep.

Josh, I would really like to start working out with you…but as we talked about recently, because I have so little weight on me right now, it seems as if any physical exertion pushes me into an induced fever. When I’m at a comfortable weight, I’d REALLY be interested in working out with you man!!!

If you all want to feel swoll/get pushed beyond your limits, just tell me and I can make it happen. Currently, No Gym membership (I might get on that 24hour deal train and come meet you guys), so for the moment you can always come up to my place and I can destroy you in our little fitness center with dumbbells and circuit training. :stuck_out_tongue:

Do you get dizzy, like if you exorcise when you haven’t eaten in hours?

Improvement Thread Meetings- First and Third Thursdays of Every Month

In order to give people a place to meet up and work together on their goals, I am going to start holding meetings for the Improvement Thread every First and Third Thursday of every month. For people who have wanted to work on a goal, but have been having trouble working on it alone, it’s a chance each month to sit down and really work on your goals, measure your progress, and to meet with a group of people who can keep you motivated by giving tips, and generally creating an environment that is about working towards the things you want and really accomplishing things. As stated in first post of thread, our biggest obstacle to achieving things is usually ourselves and challenge of staying motivated and dillegent when working alone. These meetings are a chance for people to get past that by having a set time dedicated to working on what they want to do, and surround themselves with people who are just as motivated about doing what they want. It’s a weekly place to come and stay motivated so that you can really do the things you want to do.

In order to have a middle ground for people to come to from North, South and East, the meetings will be held at the University of Washington, Odegaard Undergraduate Library (map). Starting at 7:00 ZPM and ending around 8:30 to 9:00 PM, they will provide around 2 hours where people can come together and work on what they want to accomplish (although people are always free to stay longer (although the building is closed to the public starting at 11). The library is a great place to meet because it has internet, power, printers, and other generally useful things.

While absolutely everyone is welcome to come and work on any goal, a large part of the first few meetings will be focused on job finding, and the helping improve people abilities and tools for that. Right now it is a primary focus for a lot of people, whether they need a job period, or would just like better employment, so it will be a large part of the meetings for now with sections dedicated to it.

To give the meetings some structure, each session will have a specific focus which will be laid out and created in the two weeks leading up to each it. From improving your resume, to making contacts and doing well at interviews, each meeting will focus on one area of job searching and will have a section dedicated to it. People are encouraged to post up anything they would like to talk about or any tips for the weeks focus before hand so it can be discussed online and gone over for the next Thursday.

If you anyone feels they have a particular knack for an aspect of job searching such as interviews, resumes, or making contacts it would be great if you would lead a brief session during on of the meetings where you let people know what you have to teach, and go over some keys points. It is also great experience for prepping for and running meetings, which could help you even more in your job search.

For every meeting, the first 20 minutes will be a resume review. Everyone is encouraged to bring a resume and prefferably one job that they are applying for, and ideally would like to give specail attention too. Depending on the number of people, everyone should ideally look at everyone elses resume at least once (even if you spend more time with one persons) and offer a critique and name something positive they should keep or emphasize.

After that, we will go into the topic of the night and layout key bullet points on how to improve in those areas.

I have to go to work, but I will be back to finish this later. If anyone has any suggestions or questions, post them up and I can answer or add them when I get back later tonight.

How’s the cooking coming along Brent?

Goddamn Brent. You are like my favorite person that I hardly get a chance to see. Amazing. Err’body should get in on this.

I will be there for sure, even though I am not currently looking for a job. I will definitely help in any way I can.

Now the real question is what do we do after, bar or food!?

Also, in terms of my progress i met an academic advisor today and we had a really really good talk that made me seriously reconsider what I was planning on doing for school, so I plan to see more advisors in a couple departments to talk about graduate school and a field of study for a major.

I still need to work on the art stuff though, its been bugging me but I’ve been swamped with midterms.

Don’t believe him, this man is a flake.

You are following in my path nicely – 6th year senior status.

What the fuck? I don’t do exorcisms…

No I don’t get dizzy, I get fevery…meaning my body temperature sky rockets, my fingers become numb and I begin to feel incredibly cold. The exercising is working in an adverse affect because my body is already in a constant fight against infections in my body. By exercising, I am jeopardizing my system to work even harder, inducing a fever (a sign of your body working incredibly hard), which in turn makes it even harder to do things such as eating (gaining weight) or other various daily activities.

When you get as many fevers as I do, it’s nearly impossible to maintain a healthy appetite let alone stay motivated to even accomplish daily activities.

I kind of hate posting as of recent, but this is excellent. I’ll be there for the first Thursday with resume and guitar in hand. Props to Brent! ++

I dunno man, if the advisors give me the advice I think they will I will probably be done within 4. We’ll see though because I don’t mind going longer, especially if it helps pad my gross gpa

Well damn, Brent… what’re you doing making an awesome thread like this to get people motivated in achieving their dreams… then going another extra mile to put together legit gatherings to help 'em along? And the rest of you… taking this seriously? Actually going about achieving goals in a reasonable manner?

I didn’t think I’d ever see the day so much goodness would be attempted. I thoroughly approve. :clapdos:

I’ma play along since I love this idea so much. God knows I need to get motivated, too. Admittedly, a lot of my goals connect with each other, but that ain’t such a bad thing.

Actions towards goals (starting 2/26):

plan

[details=Spoiler]- Graduate Multnomah University in excellent standing
I don’t expect many of you to know this since I don’t go on and on about it, but I’m a full time student at Multnomah University, a Bible college. It’s taken me a while, but I’m finally set to graduate next spring. Two years at community college before starting Multnomah… transferring schools twice since then, including to a school clear across the country… definitely hasn’t sped up my getting a BS. To be fair, I did get a completely unrelated Associates’ degree before starting at Multnomah, so six years for getting a BS is a little more understandable. Still, I’m more than ready to have a BS under my belt. (For any who care, my BS is a major in Bible and Theology with a minor in Music Ministry.)

My personal strength is also my academic undoing. I’m generally smart and good on my feet. I make things happen at the last minute, but I tend to do so quite well. I think all of my previous poor grades were a result of my laziness… not of my inability to learn. I simply haven’t taken all of my classes seriously. With graduation on the way (but still far enough off that I can turn things around), and my desire to pursue further education, I realize that I really need to get back to taking this stuff seriously.

So, my goal is to get as close as possible to a 4.0 this semester and the two that follow. I don’t think I can pull of a 4.0 at this point this semester, but I can strive to get as close as possible. So, taking into consideration that I suck horribly at self-discipline, my plan of action looks something like this:

  1. Work through my syllabuses this weekend to get a specific plan for assignments to be found in the rest of the semester
  2. Get caught up on the ongoing assignments/reading I’ve been slacking on
  3. Start future projects at least 48 hours before they’re due (compared to my typical starting them the night before they’re due)
  4. Try to legitimately read my reading assignments rather than scattershot skimming™ in my common fashion
  • Get a soundtrack composition contract
I’ve long loved composition and music in general. For at least a few years now (pretty much since the first time I listened to Final Fantasy VIII’s soundtrack and was blown away by “Liberi Fatali” and inexplicably addicted to “Find Your Way”), I’ve wanted to compose music. I worked on it a little here and there, but I lacked training and understanding to write more than a few catchy melodies with occasionally good harmonies. Over the last couple of years, I’ve gotten a little music training, but I’ve still a long ways to go. Still, recently, I’ve determined that composition is what I am most passionate about. Likewise, it is what I am bent on doing with my life. Sure, I’ll do other things, but I’m finally setting aside uncertainty and pursuing it full-force.

Sure, I’d absolutely love to write symphonic works for public performance, and I hope to do that some day, but my greatest love remains soundtracks for games and film. Uematsu-san is a huge inspiration to me. But I digress.

My goal is to have a contract with either a game developer or a filmmaker. I’m being as realistic about this as possible, so I thoroughly expect this contract to be with a no-name indie outfit, but I can live with humble beginnings; the creative act appeals to me more than the world renown. Because I want to have some kind of framework/timeline for this, I’m going to put my target completion for my first contract at five years from now… which is about when I estimate I’ll be wrapping up studies at UCF if my five-year plan pans out.

In order to achieve this, my plans look something like this:

  1. Build up my portfolio by composing at least one decent song a month
  2. Get as much composition training as my Multnomah music electives will permit
  3. Listen to and experiment with different genres of music
  4. Start/join a jam-oriented band to get more experience in collaborative songwriting
  5. In one year’s time, start hounding the crap out of indie devs/filmmakers in pursuit of a contract

Brief synopses for other goals

  • Move to Florida
I lived there last semester, and I absolutely loved it. I’ve decided that, as soon as I graduate here, I aim to move back. I’ll need to save money between now and then to afford the move/get situated there.

  • Get and hold a decent job
I’m striking out on the job hunt these days, but I need income. Badly. Especially with student loans soon to need paying off… and with a move less than a year and a half away. Gonna wanna keep this job until I move, though. Current project: Create a new resume.

  • Own my own house
This one isn’t exactly an immediate goal, but I see no reason to push it off. The town in Florida that I think I will initially move to has extremely low cost of living. I could get a very decent first house for under a hundred grand there. (I could get a perfectly viable first house for $60-70k.) This is gonna mean a need for more savings and reliable income.

  • Pay off student loans
Pretty self-explanatory. I think I have around $15k in loans right now… which isn’t too terrible. I should have no more than an additional $2k by the time I graduate, and I think that’s definitely leaning toward the unfavorable side of probability.

  • Graduate University of Central Florida’s BM in Composition program
I may not require formal education to compose, but the reality is I do well under training. Moreover, I may have the ability to write catchy melodies, but I need more than that to succeed in the world of soundtrack composition. UCF has a great program for this that will cost me around $4k/year for tuition. It should take me two-three years to graduate. However, I won’t start until a year after I graduate Multnomah for the sake of gaining Florida residency first (otherwise… that $4k/year becomes $22k/year).

  • Learn to play violin
I’m a guitarist by nature, but the violin is tied with the piano for my choice as most beautiful instrument. I don’t plan on becoming a concert violinist, but I rely heavily on strings in most of my composition. I’d much prefer to be able to take a real violin in my hands for when I’m coming up with violin parts.

  • Develop piano skills
I’ve taken a year of piano class, and I’ve learned things like “how to find and play chords” and “proper fingering for scales.” Still, I’m out of practice even in that. Since I’ll be doing a lot of my composing from behind a keyboard, developing these skills will be quite helpful. I haven’t yet decided how I’m going to go about doing this in practical terms, though.

  • Write a musical
I’d say it’s just a specialized branch of composition, but that’s not quite true. I have to write a meaningful story with living characters, too. Don’t have a practical plan for this one just yet, either.

  • Learn to suck less at Tekken 6
Street Fighter will always be my choice series, I think, but Tekken is quickly growing on me. Plan to watch more training videos, read up on the guides here, and pick a character or two to really focus on learning.

  • Make it to at least one SRK-related gathering a month
’Nuff said. Gonna have to make it up to Seattle at some point, too. Difficult in light of the following, though.

  • Get my driver’s license
Yeah. I’m 23. I don’t have it. Meh. I couldn’t afford to drive previously, so I couldn’t get my license (somehow, it was part of my parents’ insurance policy that no licensed driver could be uninsured… so even if I wasn’t actually driving, I would have had to pay for insurance anyway). Then I got used to public transit (which more or less sucks), and I never bothered to get it. For better or worse, driving is becoming more and more necessary for me (two hours each way to commute 20-something miles across state lines every day… sucks), and it will be vital in Florida. Just gotta get that currency flowing and get behind the wheel.

  • Find an exercise routine that works for me
Plenty of excuses can be made for a lack of exercise routine, but I especially hate mine. For some reason, I can’t breathe in the Vancouver air. In Florida, I was playing sports/running on a daily basis. Here, I can’t walk two-three blocks without feeling like I’m having an asthma attack or something (which I was tested for and have no indication of actual asthma). I have to develop an exercise plan that I can actually make use of that doesn’t involve me running outside. In my house, I have free weights, and that’s about it. Getting cardio sucks.[/details]

Progress with goals:
Taking a cue from Brent’s first goals post, I’ll give an update next week when there is something to report.

…Well that ended up long as crap.
