Dr Grammar: Just to clarify, so using meter for EX HH is good but you don’t often switch cancel it (waste of meter)? If you did, I thought the charge Super would give more damage than other options. Also I’ve heard ppl can charge-super off regular HH but I can’t even get it to come out in time off EX
What are the differences between the 5MK->MK string and the 5MP-MP string? From just lab testing I thought the MP string had more range.
I would like to know too. Currently I do 5MP-MP because from there I can do 5LP for OH, 2HK for low attack (most people don’t punish), 5HP for pushback, LP dash for pressure or HK Hunting hawk on hit. To my knowledge you cannot cancel 5MK-5MK into HK Hunting Hawk, it must be EX HH. Also it seems like both can enter flamingo, maybe MK-MK has a better frame advantage than MP-MP after stance change?
MP-MP string is really good. Hwoarang doesn’t have great pokes but MP is actually really decent, I think of like Bison’s HK but cancellable. As for MK-MK it leads to more follow ups. Example: stance cancel into flamingco for a low mixup, or finish the string with a HK xx dynamite heel. You can even dash cancel the dynamite heel to apply more pressure.
Does this differ from MP-MP though? With MK-MK are you actually cancelling the recovery frames or just switching stances? With MP-MP you don’t cancel (I think). Also you can do the mixups I described above which are the same things you described.
Yeah, that’s right. With your other character, you are charging starting from lv.2, right?
5MP itself has a lot of range, but the MP follow-up tends to whiff at some ranges. 5MK > MK > HK is more likely to connect in strings, and it’s also much easier to hit-confirm. 5MK > MK can also link into FLA MP with the Flamingo transition. On block, 5MP > MP is around +2 with the Flamingo transition, but it pushes you back a lot, which means you don’t get pressure from it. 5MK > MK is +1 on block with the Flamingo transition, and it often leaves you in range to hit with FLA LK. Also, when special-canceling the strings on block, 5MP > MP only has 16 blockstun (equivalent to a medium attack), whereas 5MK > MK > HK has 21 blockstun (higher than a heavy attack), giving you more freedom to use things like SCDC or Special Step xx Dynamite Heel.
Go into training mode set ryu to do cr.mk randomly then block in between then try to stand right outside that range and react with st.mp chained into st.fp that’s. Hwos main ranged dep (basically use it when u can’t use mp xx mp) poke and that hurtbox on it I swear is random. So u can just throw it out when u think they will throw it out even when there in range
I like to use 5MP > 5HP~MP, which makes the boost combo come out on hit or block and the MP > MP string come out on whiff (which you can make recover faster by holding 3). Other pokes to use occasionally are 2HK (can be canceled into 623HP or 214LK) and 214LK, which have more range but less reward. FLA MK has decent range, and it’s possible to hit-confirm it into the FLA MK > LK string as a combo starter. (It doesn’t need to be confirmed against large characters who can’t crouch under the 2nd hit.) 5LK and 4MK can be useful for counter-poking. 2LP can be useful for ‘close quarters’ footsies.
Does Hwo have any good normals/specials that you can whiff on purpose while out of range to build meter? As in, do they all build the same amount or are some better than others?
Medium attacks universally build 1/80 and heavy attacks universally build 2/80 on whiff. Hwoarang’s 5MP > MP string builds 2/80, and I believe it animates in approximately 30 frames with the Flamingo transition.
I just CADC to build meter, that way I have good spacing, it irks my opponents and makes them run at me and make mistakes, and im at a safe enough distance to SS under fireballs, also how do you guys use hwoarang for footsies, i feel he actually has a ton of footsie potential but all i can do is punish and mixup and pressure lol
I don’t think Hwoarang is really big on footsie battles. He has nice range on his sweep, one good footsie tool that I like to use is his l.HH, in the neutral ground game someone is gonna run into it at least once.
