The Hugo Thread

he’s a grappler but his main grab sucks you really got to get close to use it

yeah, his moonsault press is worthless unless you use ex, just because of how slow it is and it has no i frames, he might as well have that big damage to make up for his main tool of the spd being such ass

mfw the box is still salty over me taking his points because he couldnt derp out hugo with rolento, the hate in these ppl these days, so sad :frowning:

Ugh it’s hopeless trying to use hugo…i feel like zangief just has something that hugo’s desperately missing

like better footsies, better spd and a reliable AA without the use of meter?

“Hugo is like MvC2 Sentinel” - James Chen

Only time I’m really using Moonsault Press is for quick whiff punish and roll punishes

Idk but Hugo is pretty good as long as opponents don’t zone u out. His wake up leaves much to be desired bu It int that bad…

Probably…it’s just that with zangief you never really feel like there’s no hope of you winning but with hugo it becomes frustrating due to how slow a good chunk of his moves are his monster lariat doesn’t really compare to zangief’s double lariat and his moonsault press is just about useless…i know people say hugo’s better than zangief but right now i seriously find that hard to believe

yeah, ppl are probably just salty that they are losing to hugos because they havent played 3S or refuse to learn how to fight him, opposed to zangief who has been around forever and people know how to fight

I think Hugo really is better than Gief in this game in general. But the trick to making him work is that you can’t really think of him as a grappler at all – more like an extremely slow, hard-hitting frame trap character. His SPD does way too little damage, is way too slow, and has way too little range to be the FOCUS of his game – but it’s not really useless at all. It does pretty much what it needs to do, which is to wake up people who’ve been conditioned to sit still and not hit buttons by Hugo’s frame traps, backbreaker, and lariat armor – and then ideally, they start hitting buttons again and you get your sweet delicious no-work clap combos into obscene damage.

I don’t think this character is top tier but he HAS to be respected in this game. He hits like a truck and makes whoever he teams with hit like a truck for very little meter (often the price of a single tag cancel for 450+ damage). One stray c. MP in the clutch can mean a massive comeback or the outright end of a match. The only trick is playing him as part of a TEAM, so that he isn’t burdened by his low mobility and his partner isn’t burdened by an ass-whupping that requires Hugo on point in a bad matchup for Hugo.

Are there air-to-air’s that can beat his Back Breaker? I like this move, but in matches I tend to forget to make us of it.

Hugo is so fucking beast. I get 750dmg for free off a few resets I came up with for Asuka.

Share! I’m messing with a Asuka/Hugo team now. Trying to find a reliable point for Hugo. I was messing with king but I don’t know how I feel about his play style. It’s either Asuka or one of the mishimas.

yes. i’ve only had that experience against my friends kazuya but there certainly are.

The mistake people make with grapplers in this game is that only zangief is a traditional grappler.(OPINION)
King rushes down with throws.
hugos throws are good but his lariat is clearly where its at for reating to button presses. he also has combos. zangief at best will have to use a lariat or green hand. hugo can back breaker, clap em out, lariat again or super.
zangief can guard and punish from a character length away

I’m liking Nina at this point. She has great footsies and even if you don’t have the best execution you can easily hit confirm her pokes into tag chains, into hugo damage at the very least.

At the most, well you can do some pretty wild shit with those two.

I agree with Theautophobia. Hugo isn’t a grappler to me, which is good because the range on his moonsault press leaves something to be desired. He is more of a shut down / reaction type of character.
Jump? --> backbreaker
Normal? --> Lariat
Turtle? --> walk to corner
I also feel that [character with ridiculous hit confirms] x Hugo are gonna be sick teams.

Has anyone been using his s.Hk vs people that like to roll out the corner? You can tag cancel for a free high damage meterless combo. I’m getting 425 ishh with Asuka. The only problem is s.HK is not safe on block. high risk high reward?

P.S. s.HK is an overhead

Command grabs are just not that good in this game for the most part. Can’t be tag canceled so they end up doing less damage than most other mixups, slow startup, result in knockdowns which allow the opponent to play the stand/roll/backdash mixup, and only 2-3 of them in the whole game have good range.

Reasons I like Hugo:
–1200 life
–Basic 500 damage bnbs
–Can keep the opponent standing in 500 damage clap/ex lariat combos, which is really really good because that means the opponent can’t roll away after, you keep better positioning
–Can set up 700 damage combos that never knock the opponent down and lead into great mixups for the incoming character
–Really simple footsie game: lariat, lariat charge, lariat charge fake, lp buffer, lk buffer, occasional cr mk
–Hk backbreaker is an amazing escape option
–Meatsquasher is one of the best command grabs in the game because it actually helps with positioning
–Once the opponent is cornered, they just have to deal with claps, meatsquasher, or on reaction backbreaker
–Fun frame traps
–Lariat is amazing in week 1
–Splash is amazing in week 1
–Nice basic meaty mixup: cr lk xx cr mk, cr lk xx st hp, cr lk xx meatsquasher, cr lk charge lariat
–Can build meter well
–Claps nullify fireballs for so many frames

Reasons I don’t like Hugo:
–Most non-light normals are nearly useless
–Jump is so bad that jumping over some projectiles is literally impossible
–Very slow walk speed
–Lots of his mixups and frame traps can be escaped with backdash, Hugo has to get risky about chasing people down if he expects a backdash

Overall I think he’s a strong character. Some of his bad matchups will get flushed out more and people will figure out ways to deal with him; that’s what almost always happens to both grapplers and to characters that are strong early on. But I still think he’ll end up good. And by the way, I like him on point because I like using him to start 600 damage non-knockdown tag cancel combos that result in my partner coming in and playing high/low/frame trap/command grab mixups without the opponent being able to roll away.

Hugo has 1200 health? I thought he has 1150. Also I have seen people use body splash on their way up in their jump arc to manipulate Hugo’s hurtbox. Does high-jumping over fireballs help at all? It only adds a frame to his jump though. Or is it the 7 pre-jump frames that is the problem?
