The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

Yeah I can’t say TCM2 is for everyone but it is free so maybe check it out if you get bored.

I did watch Kill List a few years ago. My memory of it is foggy but I remember enjoying it. It’s got some pretty brutal violence in it as I recall.

Awesome, been wanting to watch that lately. Such a batshit insane sequel that grew on me over time.

Watching TCM2 now, forgot this was a Cannon movie which makes a lot of sense in hindsight.

Also I can never fault on Tobe Hooper. As a Texas born and raised man myself, his authenticity to the area, dialect and such is a treat to see.

Definitely watch the Cannon Films documentary on Netflix if you haven’t already.

Oh, I have. Was such a beautiful clusterfuck of a mess.

The 80’s was amazing.

So caught the Poltergeist remake and 28 weeks later the other night.

On Poltergeist: who the hell greenlit this? I think the run time was only 90 minutes but it felt like 2 hours. There was hardly any scares or tension as well, it did the usual jumpscares but warned you ahead of time it was coming.

Creepy clown dolls? Bellowing tree? TV that isn’t receiving anything? My god I wonder where it will lead!

The family drama and character building is non existent for the most part. They also switch to the boy as the main character, which I think he did an alright job, just when you are the only three dimensional character in a sea of cardboard cutouts it isn’t difficult.

On 28 weeks later: first viewing, and I know why it took me so long. I was a big fan of the original but when this one was promoted in America, they cut the trailers as this action packed military vs the infected and that didn’t sit well with me.

Thankfully the film isn’t actually like that, and I’m sure the mishandled promotion hurt ticket sells and viewing experience for the film. Was surprised to see Idris Elba and Jeremy Tenner, was also more surprised at how bleak it was in regards to offing people you really wouldn’t expect.

Story was kind of a mess? Its really odd, but I enjoyed it as a small look into the aftermath. Just the circumstances of how the Virus came back coupled with the handling of it was very head scratching in how far they reached.

Has anyone seen Conjuring 2 yet? I really liked the first one (the children actors did a phenomenal job of being terrified in the scary scenes, which made it more believable). It’s reviewing fairly well so far, with a 75 percent on RT, which is pretty decent for a horror flick.

Havent even seen the first one yet, or the spin off, Annabelle the old doll that is spooby.

I should check out the first sometime soon at least.

Conjuring is worth watching. Annabelle is fucking terrible.

(I still feel like I’m forgetting to mention something in here. Sigh.)

I can confirm that the first The Conjuring is a surprisingly good movie having watched.

I can also confirm that Annabelle seemed like an unnecessary, cash-in “prequel” from the very beginning and it would seem that’s what it turned out to be given what I’ve heard most people say about it, not that I’ve looked or bothered watching that one.

My only problem with that series is it is based on the “real events” of a paranormal couple. Considering they were outed as frauds and such but still seem to get a pass, also heard they were dicks.

Just the real events trope is annoying, to many people take it at face value.

(Well, people are idiots, so that’s nothing new.)

Knowing their dicks, which isn’t surprising to learn, shouldn’t stop you from watching the movie unless it’s been proven that (a large part of) the earnings from it to them. If that’s the case, then, yeah, I can see why you wouldn’t want to watch it.

I think I only watched it because my mother and sister were randomly watching it. I didn’t go see it in theaters; just like how I’m not going to see the second one in theaters.

It’s up to you really.

Insidious 4 I mean conjuring 2 was pretty good.

Yeah I watched it last night, too. Not as good as the first one, and I thought the climax was rushed a little, but definitely in the upper echelon of modern horror movies.

(Is that really saying much?)

I honestly can’t really think of that many actually good “modern” horror movies, at least depending on how far back you define “modern” in this sense.

I actually didn’t like the first one that much.

This century, I guess.

(I’m tempted to make a joke how you mean all the way back to the silent era given 1916 onward would technically be “this century”.)

So since 2000 then? 2001?

…Yeah, I honestly can’t think of any “good” mainstream horror movies off the top of my head, at least that I’ve seen, over that entire period save for the aforementioned The Conjuring and, of all things, the first The Ring remake. Out of curiosity, what are you thinking of and counting when you say that?

That’s tough, man. I’m not nearly as versed as probably most of the folks who post here, but here are some of the “modern” horror movies I remember liking:

Conjuring 1 & 2
The Ring
Stir of Echoes (1999)
Quarantine maybe?
It Follows
Cabin in the Woods
28 Days Later
… I can’t really think of too many more off the top of my head. There have been some serviceable, even enjoyable, horror movies besides what I have liste. But most of them just aren’t very good movies overall. I am interested in Crimson Peak.

Oh, and What We Do in the Shadows is the best vampire movie in a long time.

A Serbian Film

come to mind.
