The Horror Thread: Talk all things macabre

(Ah. I see. Thanks for the reminder since that jives with what I’ve heard before.)

Two things, though neither are particularly of note:

  1. Due to having confirmation that the title was Contamination .7 instead of me just imagining that unnecessary period (or, I guess, decimal point), I found it rather quickly on IMDB, though as you said, it’s entitled something else on there: Crawlers. That still doesn’t explain why it didn’t come up at all when I just searched for “Contamination”, which is weird because I know that IMDB tends to search alternate titles too even if it’s not the exact name.
  2. Apparently The Forbidden Planet came on today on TCM…and I missed the first six minutes of it. It’s hardly a horror movie either though, even if it does relate back to my Rocky Horror Picture Show and “what is horror” questions that no one responded to–either way, seeing that a young Leslie Nielsen is apparently supposed to be in the movie is a bit jarring. I’m so used to only ever knowing that him as an older gentlemen, though I was aware that he mostly known for serious movies before Airplane!.

EDIT: Oh gods, he’s the blond guy that’s the main character. Wow. Even more jarring to realize I’d been looking from from the beginning only to not know it.

Got to see Nina Forever and Southbound.

Nina Forever is a great romantic black comedy. Quite a bit of nudity and sex. Not at all scary really, but the effects are great.
Think Babadook meets Spring.

Southbound was a really good anthology horror. Similar to VHS but with a very well done thru line. The shorts ( 5 of them) flow effortlessly into the next making them all interconnected in some way. The hospital one being my favorite.

Both available on VOD or in theaters if you’re lucky enough to be near one that’s playing them.

Yeah I saw the trailer for Southbound a couple weeks ago, thought it looked pretty cool. I’ve never heard of Nina Forever.

Apparently Jeepers Creepers 3 was confirmed. I dunno how I feel about this, but I’m surprised so far it isn’t a reboot.

More like the first and less like the second is a good starting point.

Ugh.

The first was only good for about the first 2/3s.
Maybe they’ll just remake it like they did Cabin Fever for absolutely no reason.

That reminds me: Saw Visions and The Veil (both streaming on Netflix) and oof.
Veil is just boring, but worth it for the Thomas Jane hamfest.
Visions is basically what you get when someone watches a couple horror movies and decides to combine them thinking they’re being clever. (they’re not)

Spoiler

The beginning and ending is essentially the plot of Inside. Minus the terror and blood and violence, of course. It was actually kind of offensive and nonsensical.

(goes back to check if this got posted since Manx posted in the lounge on Thursday but it’s apparently been around since October)

Apparently it hasn’t been, so I’m just going to leave this here, even if it’s not actually horror obviously:

Incidentally, while going back to check, I see found the trailer that Apathy-Inc posted of Nina Forever (and Tales of Halloween) because it was back in September on the very page–21–before I started checking this thread with regularity. Nina Forever actually looks pretty interesting:

Speaking of Thomas Jane, I saw that bear attack movie with him, Cyclops and Billy Bob Thornton. I thought it might turn into a gritty Yogi Bear reboot after Billy Bob described the bear as “not your average bear”.

I randomly came across The Den on Netflix. Surprisingly good. It’s The Strangers meets The Social Network .

(Oh hey, Zulu. It’s been years.)

Damn it. It’s like every time it randomly comes on TV, I always miss the beginning (half) of The Children. Has anyone else seen it? If so, then what were your impressions of it?

Has anyone seen Crimson Peak? I’m somewhat interested in watching it.

Crimson Peak looks great and the performances are top notch but I just didn’t really get into it. Story didn’t click.

They’ve got another one coming out soon that’s just like it called “Ratter”.

I couldn’t stand the Den. My suspension of disbelief only stretches so far.
Randomly terrorizing people for really no purpose isn’t scary to me, it’s just annoying. Even Saw had reasons behind why the victims were chosen.

(Haha. Killer Klowns from Outer Space came on today on Chiller and it’s coming on tomorrow morning as well. I’m tempted to watch it again after all these years, if only because it’s actually a lot more gruesome than I remember it being even if I’m not normally swayed by gore.)

That said, I’ve two questions, one of them also relating to Chiller:

  1. Does anyone remember a series called The Gates? I randomly saw it on there a couple of weeks ago with Frank Grillo of all people being one of the actors on there, but I honestly don’t remember that series at all even though you’d think something like that would have readily come on Syfy back when it was Sci-Fi and I’ve watched Sci-Fi with (declining) regularity over more than a decade.

  2. Anyone planning on going to see The Witch? From the sole trailer of it I saw on the TV, it actually looks more interesting than the bland name suggests; at the very least, it looks far more interesting and less eye-roll worthy than the 2016 The Boy–not to be confused with the 2015 The Boy. This even before I searched out the extended trailer just now:

The Witch looks like it has some awesome atmosphere. Looks terrifying from the preview. I’m interested.

Yep. It’s on Netflix.
Started out with a lot of promise then fell off and really seemed to lose it’s way. It got canceled after a season and none of the mysteries ever got resolved.

(Wow, I’m surprised this fell all the way to page 3 in just a couple of weeks.)

I just watched Grabbers last night, after only finding out about it just two weeks ago when it was randomly on Chiller; I decided to stop watching after half of it so that I could watch it “properly” on a DVD given how much Chiller seems to edit out of the movies they show. As it was, I rather enjoyed it despite the only person I “knew” in it being Russell Tovey, the English he of the stick-out ears; naturally, he stands opposed to Colin Morgan, the Irish he of the stick-out ears.

I could have done without the slightly forced romantic sub-plot, but it didn’t strangle or otherwise hold-up the plot as much as it usually does in horror and sci-fi media. In fact, the fact there was a romantic sub-plot let there be a love triangle between Russell Tovey–as weird as it was to see him be so “aggressively” heterosexual in his flirtations–and the two main characters, which itself allowed for a few of the funnier jokes and quips. If anything, then the most jarring thing about the movie as a whole was that the CGI in it somehow looked a lot better than the CGI of quite a few Hollywood movies that probably had like 10 times the budget; I’m really not sure how that works.

As it is now, the next possible (comedy-)horror movie I watch is likely to be Sightseers, which I had never heard of either despite it being on an Edgar Wright film apparently; perhaps because it didn’t have Simon Pegg or Nick Frost in it, at least as main characters from what I can tell. My mother and sister, who I had watch Grabbers with me, found the trailer for it, which was before Grabbers proper, rather amusing; so did I, which is why I’ll be watching it next, even if it’s arguably not a horror movie despite technically being about killers.

For the record, the two other trailers were Maniac and Byzantium. They both look interesting and I’ve at least heard of Byzantium before; I’ve even seen that it’s been on TV before; I’ve just never gotten around to watching it (yet) given stuff about vampires was hard to sell me on even before Twilight ruined things.

I forgot to say thanks for the reply. Sorry.

Hmm…that’s unfortunate to hear, though it’s the way of a quite a few shows unfortunately, regardless of genre. It still bothers me that I don’t recall ever hearing it though. Even with as little as I watch TV nowadays, I tend to at least vaguely know of even esoteric shows in passing.

Maniac is pretty hardcore, I remember a lot about that film actually making me uncomfortable. Really felt like I was spiralling into the madness with him and the kills are so brutal.

Loved it, and surprisingly, also the remake.

Yeah when I heard the remake would be entirely first person I had some serious doubts but it worked really well. Elijah Wood plays a good creep.

Watching Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 for the first time in like 15 years. I forgot how batshit this movie really is. Dennis Hopper is amazing.

If anyone is interested, it’s free on Paramounts YouTube page.

(Hmmm…good to know, even though I’m personally not interested in any of Texas Chainsaw Massacre movies, at least at present. That said, I forgot to say thanks for the information about Maniac, so thanks.)

So, I finally get around to watching Sightseers today. I quite enjoyed it, though I’m still not quite if counts as a horror movie so much as a rather dark pseudo-romantic comedy. At any rate, it was far more enjoyable than most rom-coms are and it had a better ending than I was expecting too, which is saying something given how easy it is screw up endings.

Anyway, two of the trailers on that were also horror movies that both looked somewhat interesting and seemed vaguely familiar: Kill List and Blue Caprice. Has anyone watched either of them?

(For the record, the other two movies were the already talked about Grabbers and the non-horror movie The Angel’s Share.)
