Completely forgot about Mimic and The Relic. Two decent 90’s movies that presented their own unique brand of horror/monster.
It was decent at best. I really wanted to like that one back in the day.
I thought they were terrible.
Relic is decent at best, the story is ridiculous when you find out where the creature came from.
I completely forgot about Mimic, great movie, has it’s own unique thing going on. I especially love when you realize who Mr. Funny Shoes is in the subway scene. Also any movie with children being brutally murdered scores points in my book. Not because killing children is cool, but simply because the movie has the balls to pull it off, and not solely for shock value.
A certain AvP Requiem comes to mind. Damn near applauded with the child scenes because IRL these things give no fucks about any kind of human. For movies that based on what-ifs, most tend to stay away from the more delicate horrors that would be presented in real life situations. Very interested in seeing Krampus this December since it seems to be no holds barred in that anyone can get it.
AvP Requiem is a guilty pleasure. It’s terrible but it’s pretty self-aware of how terrible it is and it has some great gore, plenty of scenes of Predators fighting Aliens, and a PredAlien Queen.
Should we add Species to that list? Or is that getting into the sci-fi moreso?
But then again, sci-fi and horror go hand in hand many times.
Event Horizon, Alien, Predator… Jason X, Leprechaun 4.
Oh ya! WISHMASTER! That movie was pretty sweet, in a shitty 90s horror kind of way.
Does Re-Animator count towards being sci-fi horror?
Sci-Fi horror is still horror. I consider Alien a horror movie, and a sci-fi movie, but I don’t consider Star Wars to be a horror movie, as well as a sci-fi.
Relic was odd. The book’s took awhile to explain where the monster came from, but hinted at it for quite awhile. In fact, they defeat the first monster, before figuring out who it was, and the scientist that was the monster, doesn’t show up until the second book. The movie just rushed everything into one full ass movie. Still, not terrible. Fuck, I think I am going to re-watch that.
I don’t wanna discuss AvP. They keep fucking that movie up, and just SHITTING all over both franchises mythology. Oh Earth would be FUCKED if Aliens were here, oh wait, they’ve been here forever, and there was no need to go to space to obtain specimens or samples. Predators only hunt in the hottest environments, except for this one hunting party that went to fucking Antarctica. Predators are solitary creatures, that have no home planet, and just travel the stars hunting, being born and living on their ships their entire lives (with each hunting clan having different ships, equipment, and markings), and then the last two movies is like “naaa here’s their homeplanet, looking different each time, and here’s their home planet with breathable air, even though Predators have been shown to need to breath their own air. Oh and now there are super Predators.”
The AvP comics tended to be good. The first one was all right which was the catalyst for the AvP idea and was the basis of the movie. The Anderson shitfest stole a few things from the comic. I still think AvP could be done justice one day.
Species is pretty fun. It’s essentially a female take on Urotsukidoji.
Yeah, all I’ve wanted is the first comic. Alien planet that humans have recently started colonizing, Preds show up to train, humans accidentally cause an accident, injuring the leader of the Predators and releasing the Alien Queen, and the younglings go out and just start killing everything (including the unarmed), in breach of Predator conduct.
Humans heal up the Predator, who repays his debt and slaughters off the rest of the Predators, and eventually him and Machiko (the badass human) kill the Alien Queen. Predator dies, Machiko lives on the planet with trophies on her walls, until the Predators show up in a sequel, and arm her to the teeth and bring her along on a hunt.
Literally, the movie would cost less too, because you could film in like Tunisia or Montana or some desert shithole as the alien planet.
Species was meh. The later movies were downright awful, but the first wasn’t TOO bad. I didn’t like Forest Whitaker’s role, but maybe that’s cuz he looks more alien than the Species broad did.
The original script was a pretty straight adaptation of the comic but a lot of issues came up:
Predator 2 and Alien 3 flopped in America. Predator 2 flopped harder.
The original script was projected at something like 70 million dollars.
The producers for the Alien and Predator franchises did not work well together.
Supposedly, I have no idea if this is true or not, Fox told Sigourney Weaver about the AvP project and she thought it was dumb and did Alien Resurrection to stave off AvP. It probably helped that she was paid 10 million dollars and given an Executive Producer credit too.
The big reason to hate the Paul W. Anderson AvP (other than it being a PG-13 Paul W. Anderson shit fest) is that it killed the prospect of an Alien 5 written by James Cameron and directed by Ridley Scott.
The Capcom arcade beat 'em up is loosely based on a script of the AvP movie that was supposed to come out around 94.
Because Danny Glover vs Predator was retarded as fuck. I’m not saying you needed Arny (seriously, he was huge, Predator was huge, he was making T2 at the time, and you couldn’t fucking just WAIT???), but Danny was an awful fucknig protaganist. I love him as an actor, but you ain’t telling me a street cop is replacing army special forces. I don’t mind Pred 2 though, it had some great scenes, and you gotta admit that Columbian broad fucking that drug dealer the Jamaicans slaughter is riding that cock like a champion.
Good, it should cost that much to make a badass Predator movie these days. I’d also like to see them start using CGI Predators more, the costumes are nice for closeups and shit, but in action, they move too slow. Predators showed this off perfectly during the fight between the Pred and the Yakuza dude with the sword. Preds should just be replaced by CGI dudes who can do crazy martial arts and shit with weapons.
Then get better producers. The thing I remember most about Freddy vs Jason, besides it being one of my all time favourite movies (even though I didn’t like them not using Kane Hodder as Jason), was that the first thing they did was establish a list of things the movie HAD to have happen, in order to be a proper movie, and equal to both franchises. This should have been done in AvP. They made it on the cheap, and it shows, and it cost them. Aliens is not a movie you really ever do on Earth, so putting Aliens on Earth twice, was fucking dumb. The second one wasn’t THAT bad, but still wasn’t what it SHOULD be. One of the best parts of Aliens is that it takes place in the future, with crazy weapons and spaceships. Setting it in modern times is just wrong on sooooo many levels.
I know that, and that game was fucking amazeballs.
I like you, post more often. I’m now your biggest fan.
EDIT: Also, forgot the reason I came here to post. Anybody able to stream some horror movies today or tomorrow or this weekend? It would be nice to get a few good horror movies together, and watch em together like the losers that we are.
I was gonna watch Relic because of you asshats, but instead I’m gonna check out Super 8. Never seen it, and it seems sci-fi and horrorishy enough that I’m down. I’m also incredibly inebriated, so we’ll see how this works out.
Alien and The Thing and other movies like that are just sci-fi horror movies, that deal with aliens. Other good example is invasion of the body snatchers, though I think the invasion of the body snatchers from the 70s was the best.
The Thing is sooooooooooooooooooo good especially when you realize the black guy at the end is a Thing.
The Thing had 2 endings though.
1st episode of Ash VS Evil Dead leaked early. About to watch it now.
how so?
The alternate ending was removed.
