Yeah, but that title shot was back when Ippo first got the japanese title from Sendo. Kimuraâs been sinking ever since. Which makes Mashiba seem weaker since he had such a hard time against Kimura.

But remember Mashiba was supposed to take on the world stage after his match with Kimura, but since he had trouble putting him away and Kimuraâs been sucking ever since his match against Mashiba, Mashiba lost his chance at a world ranking for a long time.

That was a grip ago. Granted it was a great fight, and Kimura did work. But for whatever reason, he just kind of didnât develop after that. I mean its weird because Kimura actually has skills. But since he is Aokiâs best friend, he automatically gets dropped to Aoki tier.
Kimura is forcing himself to fight in the Jr. Lightweight division because Aoki is lightweight. Kimura secretly the better one but hides it in respect for his bro.
EDIT: Been watching the anime from the beginning. Itâs still really strong. When the coach tells Ippo spar with Takamura to help him develop tech against Jason Ozumaâs hooks and Takamura just suckerpunches the shit out of him the instant the whistle blows is godlike. Then when Ippo finally ducks a hook Takamura gives him an elbow drop before Ippo can swing.

I feel you on the whole thing with Kimura, which is noble but yeah I feel him. He doesnât want to body his homie and make him quit. But I feel that if Kimura was given the attention like ippo and takamura then he would be really good and most likely be champ.
