What’s a good way to train with Guy before going online again? I have a bad winning percentage but ended on a 5 fight winning streak before PSN went down.
…practice combos?
Online is bad.
Practice everything in training mode, granted the AI can get everything frame perfect it’s good practice as well going to casuals, at least with the AI you can practice blockstrings and run/stop pressure.
To elaborate a little:
If u want more wins, its time to get boring. Perhaps u can train accordingly;
-
Get confident with your combos. Try getting them to almost 100% whenever u execute them. In training mode. Refer to youtube maybe combo exhibition. Know why u use them, when to use them.
-
Safe jumps/meaty. They are very reliable, sort of like fundamentals. An easy way to start off Guy’s blockstring.
-
Practice run/stop. Understand what comboed into run/stop is safe or unsafe, upon block and hit. When to use them, when not to overuse them.
For details, refer to the different sections in Guy thread.
Online isn’t bad at all. Street Fighter isn’t about learning your character and expecting to win. It’s about learning *how *you should use your character against every other character. Online, you’re gonna be hit with mix-ups and trickery that you would probably never learn yourself, because quite simply, you don’t main that character, be it vega or whoever.
Just understand that by picking Guy, you’re choosing to not use easier characters that have a much better wake up game and for some, much better wake up pressure as well. And seeing how SSF4 is based so much on knockdowns and ambigiouty, that’s not a good thing at all, for Guy.
What do you guys have as your training settings?
Depends on what you require.
action : stand
guard : auto block
quick stand : on
counter hit : off
stun : none
super bar : infinite
ultra bar : infinite
attack data : on
input display: on
difficulty : hardest
Ok so I always hear about using tk izuna but for some odd reason When I go for it they never jump which sends me flying right into my opponents face lmao. anyways how exactly do I prepare myself to use it? I know it works well against guile and chunli when they jump at you but I cant for the dear life of me figure out how to apply it in a match. Ive read all the setups for it but im still clueless espcially using it against ryu’s jumpins.
I honestly don’t think it’s worth it. I’d rather EX tatsu/s.hk/cr.mp/cr.mk/cr.hk underneath them. I only Izuna drop on reaction to the opponent jumping, say out of a crossup or I predict that he’s going to jump on wakeup so jump on reaction, confirm that they jumped, and then air grab them.
so basically I shouldnt use it as much as would like to, I should only use it on predictable situations like air to air instead of doing the tk version?
Only use TK when the person is jumping at you, you are punishing an airborne move.Which there are plenty of to do so, most cases you will have to use EX Izuna to usually ensure it.
"How exactly do I prepare myself to use it?"
Just use it as a dp, sort of like use it when u see people jump.
Tk izuna (jump forward) has more reach then ex tatsu. I usually use it when opponents are at the peak of their jump arc, where they are less likely to hit an attack button. I usually tk izuna when i have no bar or when the jump is within tk izuna’s reach.
"clueless espcially using it against ryu’s jumpins"
Against characters who jump fast or have weird jump arcs, its a bit difficult to instant izuna on reaction.
Ryu is an average speed character, u should be able to react to his jumps. Perhaps you are too much on the offense, that u cannot react to jumps. Try doing your usual block strings, pause and anticipate at times, if they do not jump carry on.
Lets just stick to jumps for now. Perhaps later u can move on to catching dictator’s horizontal flame move, or adon’s wall dive etc.
Yeah instant izuna is hard on characters like Cody,Adon and Ryu who have short jump arcs. Also jumping HK from Ryu and Cody generally beats all of Guys anti airs except for cr.mk anyway.
how do you aproach viper? let’s say she’s sitting fullscreen away and does a lot of seismos…
also when i get in her range, what normals are better against her “footsies”?
If your full screen away use Forward Jump Elbow Drop, Bushin Flip Elbow Drop, Focus Attack Dash Cancel or Ex Run. It is recommended to be within Half-screen away from your opponant to start your offence. There work your way in by; Whiff Punishing with moves like Ex Hozanto and Run Attacks, Bait your opponant with Run Stop and Elbow Drop, use Pokes such as crLK, stMP, stMK and crMP. When approaching Viper, from my testing, it looks like crLK and stMK are Guy’s best poke option’s against Viper’s crMK, since that’s probably her best poke attack. End block strings and use crMK on Viper’s wake to avoid her up-attack reversal. Overall your number 1 goal should be to push Viper, (or any opponant) in the corner and ‘work’ to keep her there since Guy’s game is stronger in the corner.
Once you get her in the corner focus your attention on Anti-airs and then Blockstrings. When available, Viper will use her High Jump to get out of the corner. Be ready to use Izuna Drop, Elbow Drop and Neutral Jump Attacks such as HK to stop her from jumping out of the corner. But if she happens to jump over you, chase her down using Run antics. If she’s not doing much of anything, then annoy her with pokes, overheads, throws and baiting.
i’m sure this has been asked before, but can guy’s u2 be jumped on reaction?
Yup! But it punishes Dp FADC forward on block. It’s guaranteed.
Ok, so I’m just getting into this game again after almost a year, and I’ve got a lot of catching up to do with Guy, as my technology is currently obsolete. What OS’s are you guys finding the most useful in-match? I can’t test atm, but I imagine something could work using something like cr. lk, cr. lk ~cr.fk or something (please correct me if I’m wrong, I probably am :P), but that doesn’t really give me much of an advantage if all they do is block.
Also, are his best anti-air normals still cr.mp, cr.mk and far st. fk, or have you guys found something that works better?
Finally, is kiryu still the best guy to watch for high-level play? I’ve got a lot of matches to viddy…
Yes to everything except the last part.
Ihara, Kiyomatsu and Lord Otaku are all Guy players worth watching for high level play. Also check out combofiends Guy aswell.
thanks for the help guys so far ive slowed down my offense a tad bit to react alittle better to jumpins. I can catch feilongs chicken wing alot so im not doing so bad for now lol.
