The GIMP Thread

I was wondering, is GIMP any good as a free alternative to PS and is it worth downloading? Any opinions are welcome…

Yeah I used to use it a lot, a few of the options are in different places so it takes a while to get used to, but as far as I could tell all the options were there. But I was just playing with it, I am not a graphic designer or anything…

The download site is pretty messy, you need to download 1 or 2 other things with it too in order for it to run.

If someone else posts a link with a better download it would be appreciated, I’ve been looking for an alternative download so I can get GIMP for my new laptop

Yeah, that’s what had me questioning at first. Read a couple of reviews and most siad it was good, but it seems complicated to install and not sure it’s worth the effort. I hate messing with system32 files which seems necessary in some cases… However all I really want to do is mess with animations, layers and cropping tools, doesn’t really seem to justify the price of PS…

Gimp is usually ranked second to PS. I know a lot of people that use it and say that they love it. If you get Ubuntu Linux, the software will come installed with the OS. I’ve never used it personally, but upon first glance, it does not seem too different from PS.

Yes, it is. Unless you’re a professional graphics artist or something, then I doubt you could notice any missing features compared to PS.

Cool. I Installed it, seems pretty decent…

So, does anyone know how to use GIMP here? I figured out how to speed up a gif, but I’m having an issue with it. I changed the ms at which I want the frames to run, but when I save the gif, it runs at half the speed at which it previews in GIMP. Anyone know how to save it at the speed I set it to? Or an alternative way to speed up the gif?

if i remember correctly, Worthless used gimp a lot. you could send him a PM.

I only use gimp, I love it. I used to have photoshop on another computer. Maybe it’s just that I use mostly basic features, but I’m happy with it.

Indeed.Although i haven’t made an av in forever there are somethings here and there i remember.

The gimp is awesome. A lot of the avatars I have made was made using gimp.

I have GIMP on my laptop and for what it’s worth I found it pretty easy to install. Used it to make my av, too.

I make all my graphic art in Gimp and I’m very pleased with it. So yeah, its worth downloading :bgrin:
