I think the major problem is that this is exactly what you see in the media/movies AND women really push that idea when they give some chump advice. They always tell guys to do nice things like bring her flowers! When you ask those women if the guy they are with did that for them, the answer is usually no…BUT I WOULD HAVE LIKED IT IF HE WOULD HAVE!!!
The concept of a friend zone becomes laughably meaningless when you take a good long look at yourself and realize you aren’t a terribly good friend. A good friend isn’t in it for the faint hope of getting a polished knob. (EDIT - This doesn’t mean you can’t start off a potentially romantic relationship as friends first; I’m talking about something different.)
When I was a lad, I had that epiphany, and moved on. I recommend the same thing. If you legitimately want to be the object of your romantic desire’s friend, drop that romantic desire and find it elsewhere. If you don’t, scrap the sham “friendship” that is fair neither to yourself or the other party.
The moment one party is thinking about getting some action, it is a bit incongruous to call that relationship friendship.
