The FPS (DOOM, etc) Thread

They may not be extra levels. I’m playing these levels via level select. It juat dawned on me that I have missed them since I wasn’t playing on Hurt Me Plenty.

I cannot wait for this damn game. I loved 2016. My favourite FPS in years. Eternal honestly looks like an improvement in every form.

Out of the Battle Mode and Invasion online options, which are you most excited for?

I can’t wait for Invasions.

I’m going to play the campaign on HMP with them off for my first run-through, and then turn them on for every run after (unless I’m going for speed runs, which I’m not sure about).

I’m also going to invade a lot.

I do hope Arcade Mode from 2016 comes back though. That was a lot of fun, and I loved the leaderboard aspect.

I’d also like to see the classic Deathmatch come back.

To be honest, I’m not too excited for Battle Mode, but I can see that being something that surprises me, so i’m definitely going to try it as all demons and of course the Slayer.

In classic DOOM II, have any of you done any runs where you die every level, leaving yourself forced to start every map with just a pistol?

Twice now, I’ve accidentally hit Quick Save, instead of Quick Load when I die, forcing me to start the level without supplies.

After the 2nd time, I realized how much more challenging and fun this makes each map… I am playing on HMP - this would probably be impossible on UV or NM.

Not in Doom II but I had to pistol start a map from Thy Flesh Consumed on UV through a save fuck up.

@Skort, I don’t know if you’ve seen this thread yet, but figured you may like to if you haven’t.

That looks real clean on your PC. Please take some screenshots of Eternal (but no spoiler please?)

I shall !

May take me a while to finish it. I want to play it on Nightmare from the start. May be a mistake because 2016 on Nightmare has been busting my balls in some areas quite often and Eternal seems to be more difficult.

Lol, you’re nuts!

At least start on UV. I’m starting on HMP but I’m a wuss.

I couldn’t get past that Scourge (? - shit what do you call those areas where the guys respawn after you pull the thingy out of their thingy?) on the second level on NM. I heard that was the hardest part of the whole run. I tried too many times and gave up. I definitely felt the disadvantage of playing on a pad there. It was the only time I felt it and o Ly on hat difficulty. There’s just too many quick turns and accurate aiming that’s needed.

I know you can connect keyboard + mouse on a console though i have no idea how precise it is compared to using them on a PC.

Maybe give it a try and see how it plays out if you can find a compatible kit.

As for the difficulty, real talk on Nightmare the mobs that have been giving me the most problems are the shield dudes and the lost souls.

Shield dudes are annoying to take out while you are chased 24/7 and the lost souls while they die in 1 or 2 hits ,they also are kinda hard to spot at times when you are on the run endless, and those things almost one shot you even with health upgrades.

Still good times ! :stuck_out_tongue:

You can connect a mouse and keyboard on PS4 but it mostly works in the menu only, unless a game allowed support for it. More games are allowing it now (Fortnite does), and while I’m hoping Eternal does, I’m not expecting it…

There is a $200 CAD controller you can use that acts like a keyboard and mouse, but it really replicates a controller (the left stick is mapped out as WASD keys, and the right stick is mapped to the mouse). There are some settings that allow the mouse to act more like an actual mouse, but to be able to do the quick spin-arounds, or delicate aiming there’s an extra button you have to toggle as you do it (which just increases/decreases the sensitivity)… It’s better than a pad, yes, but a lot of coin. If this was a brand new console, I’d get it, but seems a little too late for such an accessory now. I’m also mostly playing the campaign causally, so I don’t care that much. If I was going for world record speedruns, it’d be different.

The pad control in DOOM 2016 was the best I’ve ever seen as well, and thankfully you can mostly just run around in circles and fire ahead of you as you run, which helps it, but that one area is too small with too many demons firing behind you at once. You kind have to at least spin around as you’re running away to fire, which is where the pad suffers, and it only became important on NM. That area was manageable, for me, on UV.

Also, the reason I say I don’t think Eternal will come with general keyboard/mouse support on PS4 is Id re-branded one of the faux PS4 mouse/keyboard controllers specifically for Eternal lol.

Also, yeah, I hear you about the shield guys and lost souls.

I’ve always hated the lost souls. In the classic Doom games, whenever I saw a pain elemental (which spat them out like sunflower seeds), I would run in the middle of a swarm of other demons, getting clawed at and shot, while aiming solely on those pricks, hoping to take them down asap.

The shield guys were tough too. I always modified the pulse rifle (I think) with the bomb mod as quickly as I could, but that doesn’t help in the early maps.
