Hmm not sure about the selection. Vela is injured so he goes with Blanco? Now I love Blanco as much as the next Mexican, but he’s 37 and really can’t do it for more than 25 minutes as a sub. Why not start Barrera? He was lethal against France, totally outpaced and outsmarted Evra, who has consistently been one of the best left backs in Europe, and was Man U’s best defender this season.
Oh well, I still think we can get the win to avoid Argentina.
Goucruff ,here’s what the bbc had to say “Yoan Gourcuff’s World Cup is probably over. He goes up for an aerial challenge with MacBeth Sibaya, leads with his arm, and catches the South African. Colombian referee Oscar Ruiz immediately shows a red card. Not sure there was much intent to hurt, he might have been unlucky there. Djibril Cisse looks devastated.”
2-0 now,French look a shambles.
Uruguay 1-0 up,Mexico in trouble if SA can score again.
The red card was well applied. The natural way of heading a ball is putting the arms down so as to get more height. He performed an aerial elbow smash against the opposing player: he might not be sure if he would hit him on the head or maybe break one of his rips, but he has indeed assumed the risk of hitting the other player.
It is a much different situation than that of Kaka: the Brazilian player had noticed he was getting charged at, but merely brought his arm close to his body: he had his forearm protecting him, hot his elbow. Would he raise his elbow in the hope the other player would get hurt, he would have deserved the red card he has also received.
Anyone else smell a MASSIVE FIX coming along? Everyone knows the hosts need to stay in the comnpetition, especially as it looks like all the African teams are going out first round.
Just saw the sending off, looked a bit ridiculous to me.Yeah he had his arm raised but he was looking at the ball and there was no intent.A yellow at the very most.
Where do they pull these refs from, makes Howard “Old Trafford” Webb look competent by comparison.
Well, one bring your arms up, then jumps and brings them down. And one can also move them in order to project the head towards the ball. But you agree it was deserved.
I also agree about the fix: it is not like South Korea last cup. Somehow, even with Parreira as coach, they seem an acceptable team. France is also involved in their own problems, such as Anelka getting sent back home and the so called “traitor.”
I’d rather have Mexico advancing: they are a better team all around. If Uruguay and South Africa together do not score 2 goals, that’s what is going to happen. Whoever advances, still, will have to face Argentina, who are likely to win and get to quarters.
I guess with all the crap they’re in they were actually expecting it, and there should be no problems in that sense. Seems much different than Brazil vs France in 2006, when Brazil has shown nothing, upsetting or ashaming a bunch of people.
As for the foul, notice slow motion gives the notion of whether it hit or not, but removes the notion of how hard it hit. I am confident he has assumed the risk of hitting the South African. In soccer one just does not charge at other players with the elbow.
As of now, with France having scored and Uruguay vs Mexico being a pretty even match revolving around the center of the field, it seems pretty safe to assume it is Uruguay first and Mexico second.
South Africa ARE really shit though. I know they got a draw against us and beat France, but they were much more ‘themselves’ against Uruguay- a very weak team short on genuine talent who have just been organised fairly well by a World Cup winning manager in Parreira. They looked better than they should against Mexico because they had the huge home advantage, opening game boost and frankly Mexico were nervous and ver, very wasteful, as well as ‘unlucky’ with decisions (home bias).
They may have played OK against France (I don’t know, was watching Mexico vs Uruguay), but let’s face it, a pub team would look good against that France team who are in utter disarray.
Seriously, there aren’t many worse teams in the competition that South Africa.
that Gourcuff sending off was the typical soft decision that goes for a team that are getting the benefit from the officials. If it would have been the other way round, and say, Mokoena had done the exact same thing against Cisse, it would NEVER have been a red card.
Oh well, academic now. Mexico are through to a re-match against Argentina from 2006. I was at that game in Leipzig, it was heart breaking. Mexico have a suprisingly decent record against Argentina, so I’m hoping we can work with the holes in their defence. Mexico don’t play too well against teams with a compact defence who have men behind the ball (like Uruguay did today after going one up) so perhaps we might get an early goal like in 2006 against an Argentina side that is very attacking. Should be a good game.
With Nigeria pretty much out, I think it’s safe to say the rest of the matches today will be about South Korea and Greece. I hope South Korea gets the second slot in Group B.
Peace out host country. Argentina should have a cakewalk against Mexico. Mexico looked sluggish out there today. Too tentative, wasted a number of opportunities.
I would give South Africa a chance of getting out of a group made up of New Zealand, Australia, and North Korea.
They’re bad, but they’re not as god awful as people were expecting them to be. They’ve played fairly well for the last couple of years.
Anyway, I was really hoping for Mexico to win today just so there would be a shot to see U.S. v. Mexico in the Quarters. Oh well, now I don’t have to worry about them anymore since they’re going to get stomped by Argentina.
Barrera chokes in every play. Perez is smacking away balls any other goalie in Mexico’s roster would catch. Franco is ass, plain and simple.
Today’s most shameful moment? Franco gets a bad pass, his bitch ass lets the ball run out, but Hernandez from the other side of the field puts the extra effort to prevent the Goalie kick and turns it to a hand pass. Aguirre should have brought Nery Castillo.
I’d play Hernandez instead of Franco against Argentina cos Franco isn’t gonna win anything on his head or chest against Samuel and Demichellis. I’d have strated Ochoa in goal instead of Perez, but now the tournament is going he has to stick with perez, who is a little too old and not quick/agile enough in comparison to Ochoa or even Oswaldo Sanchez. Barrera is a great sub who will give Heinze or Guttierez a LOT of trouble.
Argentina won’t have an easy match against mexico. History shows they usuall have close games, and Mexico have beaten them on a number of occasions, including in competitive games like the Copa America.
