The Football (Soccer) Thread - Season 2017/2018

I wasn’t talking about that goal in particular but yes, that’s a terrible mistake by the ref.

no it doesn’t matter if the defender is on the line if the goal keeper is out ahead of him, he shouldn’t have touched it.

Edit - LuckyDay is correct

GO FRANCE!

Did you know a lot of their players are Muslims?

Anelka, Henry, Benzema (he’s not in the cup :frowning: ), Diarra, and Ribery. I’m probably missing some.

My bad, i looked at the vid just now and you’re right Luckyday.

Why act so suprised? it’s common.

Holland also has some Muslim players, so does Germany etc.

Yep France is like that but religion doesn’t matter.

Yellows everywhere and now a red. Jeez.

Seriously. It sounds like there’s an open wheel race next to the stadium. Who came up with that shit?

The offside was a good call, shame though. I seriously couldn’t believe that last S.Africa attempt that went off the post… Holy shit. I’m surprised France hasn’t scored yet either, I have them making it out of pools in my bracket and this is very disappointing.

I’m at work and not able to watch the game going on right now, keeping up with the score and commentary, but it’s hard to tell how it’s going really.

Sounds like France has had more of the chances and just hasn’t been able to put them away. Has Uruaguay had any threats?

I thought it was funny that Henry was calling handball in the box.

Tense games today. I’m disappointed that France didn’t make a strong showing.

USA! USA! USA!

People are sleeping on our team, we’re actually pretty strong this year! The world media doesn’t like to give the USA team any credit, mainly because A: They’re haters and B: They know we’ll be hyping ourselves.

I’d love to see the British headlines if we manage to beat them. Don’t think we WILL beat them, but we could probably force a tie.

^_-;

Seriously?? USA is a strong team, they are pretty similar to Chelsea big strong players that like to keep the ball. Our defense is shit so the US will have a big advantage during set plays.

Sleep on nobody.

Media never give US team the credit they deserve, nothing new.

ESPN begin ESPN and they are over hyping the match so fucking much already, they use lines like: ‘Most anticipated match by the whole world’, ‘Could be the biggest upset in World Cup history’. It isn’t even elimination round yet…

Good thing the game plays on Sat otherwise I have to call in ‘sick’ for work.

Wait, why does the U.S. deserve more credit? They’re good, I’ll give them that, but they haven’t earned a great deal of respect in their past showings. Granted, I’m hopeful they’ll keep improving, but they don’t have the same history other countries do.

Well, when they win against good teams they got called lucky, the other team have a bad day etc. When they lost media are like ‘See I told you.’ Also when they have a good team, for example this year or 2002 team, media still downplay (I really can’t think of a better word) the team. Just shit like that, but hey I could be biased since I like US team a lot despite I am an England fan.

the us national team doesn’t play anywhere near the same brand of soccer as chelsea does…

Yeah, it’s not even close. Chelsea moves the ball and attacks in an entirely different way.

Nobody wanted to play the U.S. heading into the knockout stages in 2002. And following that tourney they were ranked in the top 10 in the world for a while, before slowly going downhill a little.

In 2006 at the Confederations Cup the whole world was talking about the U.S. team. They were still underdogs (and rightfully so), but everyone gave credit for the form they were in and how potentially dangerous they were.

In the end, they aren’t given credit because they’ve never won anything outside of Concacaf. It’s not any different for any other teams across the world. There are some great teams that have never won a cup on the world stage, and everybody knows they’re still dangerous.

2006 was a good start, and people thought coming into this World Cup we would be favored to go deep. But the qualifying run this year was pretty flat, and I don’t think overall the U.S. has done anything to make the world stand up and take notice.

It’s more a match based on pride and bragging rights. For the entire history of the two countries up until about World War II England has always been able to look down on the U.S. as sort of a little brother or inferior in a lot of ways. Football is the thing that until this day England can hold on to and claim to be better than us at. They want to keep it that way, and we want to try to show them that we’re on our way to getting up to their level.

There’s a really good story written on the history between the two countries in relation to football somewhere, can’t remember what site or who wrote it, but I need to dig it up.

lol not saying they are as dominate as chelsea, games I saw they shared some traits maybe thats just me =/
