The Football (Soccer) Thread - Season 2017/2018

It did get some attention. News and talk shows for once. The US team showed a lot of heart. Here in Seattle, our MLS team is a huge draw because we have no basketball team. Probably one of the few MLS teams that actually draws a crowd. I hope that the US team doing well in the confederations cup could be the start of people getting hyped.

Iā€™m trying to avenge this loss in PES, but this game cheats like fucking crazy. One of my attempts I lost 7-5 a.e.t.

Thatā€™s right, 7-5. a.e.t. If cross kicks near the goal like werenā€™t broken Iā€™d probably lose 7-0.

Good to see that they got the coverage that they deserved.

The US has produced top athletes in athletics and tennis for years and if the same attention was giving to potential football players, then the US could become one of the top teams in the world.

The proper running of the MLS is a good start.

Itā€™s very likely the US will be awarded the hosting duties of the 2018 or 2022 World Cup and maybe that will prompt an increase in interest and spending on football in USA.

How many of you attend MLS games or play at a local/school level?

I dont really understand why the big drive to get the US involved. Not like the game in Europe needs the money (maybe south america could use them somehow- Tim Vickery does a great weekly blog on goings on there on the bbc site)

Will be interesting to see how the US team develops over hte next few years tho. Plenty of money about and publicity. the athleticism is obviously there with their players, but its the technical know how that really counts at international level. Ive seen a few MLS games a few years back (the draw games ending in a 1 on 1 shoot out were hilarious) but technically it was horrific, on par with womens football.

How is womens football progressing as well? Kelly Smith just moved to th estates from Arsenal which was a shame, but money talks.

final score should have been 4-2

Didnā€™t make the back cover of Chicago papers(Though there was an article about it inside the papers), and it was glanced over in local Chicago news in favor of Baseball.

Saw a lot of stuff on ESPN though

If we would have won guaranteed you would hear a lot of noise coming out of the United States.

Even though we did okay, even very good by considering who we played, I kinda feel like anything less than victory is unacceptable in the United States.

Youā€™ll hear some people talking about how we did good, yada yada yada, Moral victory, blah blah blah, and then itā€™ll be brushed under the rug

So it seems 2 teams which usually make the world cup are now trying to survive. Mexico and Argentina are both barely hanging on.:rofl:

They will both qualify fine- just take a look at the fixtures. Lots of home advantage ties against traditionally weaker teams

Iā€™ve been to a Dynamo game or two, but since I am cheap and hate driving out to where they are held (a long distance from my home) I usually just try to catch the local tv broadcasts.

^^^

Which brings to question, why is Brian Ching not on the US team!!

Unfortunately he left to go but he was discovered injured before the tournament and came right back home. He only missed like two or three Dynamo games though but even his first game back he came off the bench in the second half. He is supposed to be on the US roster for the 2009 CONCACAF Gold Cup though.

People should be more worried about teams like Sweden, Portugal, and France (Egypt too, if you wanna talk about African teams), who ARE in risk of losing their World Cup spot. Argentina should do just fine, Mexico will probably suffer a bit (Costa Rica and USA are definetly taking those first two spots).

Countries qualified to the World Cup so far:

  • South Africa (duuuh)
  • Netherlands
  • South Korea
  • North Korea
  • Australia
  • Japan

The team I support, Shamrock Rovers, who until this season had been without a home ground for 22 years due to the previous owners being money hungry assholes, finally got a new stadium built by the local council for the start of this season.

Only one stand at the moment, but the second stand will be finished in the next couple of weeks and to celebrate a few friendlies have been arranged.

One of which will be Real Madrid.

It could very well be Ronaldo and Kakas first game for Real Madrid and itā€™s against my local team. Tickets sold out in hours.

Canā€™t fucking wait. :bgrin:

Beckham booed in 1st LA home game back with Galaxy

Lol told that nigga to go home.

He does need to take his washed up ass home back over there to the UK. Him and his talentless wife.

Iā€™m happy that he is getting a hard time, because he clearly ainā€™t over here to play high quality Football(Soccer).

Since people donā€™t know who the fuck he is in the United States, any hope of a Hollywood career was doomed to flop, so heā€™s trying to use ā€œThe competition over here sucksā€ argument in order to get out.

Please take your ass home Beckham. We donā€™t play that shit

Galaxy should just cut their losses and sell him to a European club. No one player is more important than the team.

That ā€˜competition over here sucks argumentā€™ is valid though. His short stint at Milan had him playing like he did at Madrid and United. You could tell he had more spirit than he ever did in LA because the competition was more intense. Thereā€™s a reason why he needed to play in Europe to train for South Africa cause in LA, he would be taking a nice stroll during an MLS match whereas in Milan, he was sprinting and doing full tackles .

Also, in this day and age, to expect loyalty from a professional athlete is like expecting a porn star to have a tight vagina. Sure, there are probably a handful, but the majority go where the money is bigger and better.

Itā€™s very a valid argument.

Iā€™d expect him to play better when he plays in Milan, because if he doesnā€™t step up the intensity, over there they will rape him no regrets if heā€™s caught slacking.

He came over here for money though bottom line. Canā€™t fault the man himself for that I guess, but his lackadaisical attitude over here hasnā€™t gained any fans either.

Beckhamā€™s already got several European clubs interested in him when the MLS season is over (a.k.a. when the Sounders win the MLS cup). You can bet heā€™s taking his ass back there when he gets the chance. Heā€™s not committed at all to the Galaxy and the fans know it. They donā€™t want him anymore.
