Sheâs been great at knowing what Barry needs, more than anybody. Deep down, she does have feelings for him, and is basically one of the reasons he does what he does.
Keep in mind, earlier this season she went and found his father for him when he needed him.
First season she was just somebody selling coffee that he was trying to impress. Now she keeps his secret, and helps guide him, as well as develop herself as a news reporter, so they can set her up in future roles.
But you made it clear you donât really care about her own life either soâŚyeah, again I donât know what you expect from her. Sheâs not going to be like any of the women on Arrow. Sheâs not a fighter, she was never a particularly amazing reporter even in comics. Sheâs been moral support since her conception. If that doesnât fly with you then simply put Flash isnât for you because due to how broken he is, most of his supporting cast is GOING to be moral support more than anything. And it is.
See I love the show, the rest of the characters are great.
My issue with Iris is, I get that sheâs Barryâs love interest but they really need to find a way to not make her seem shoehorned from a practical standpoint.
And again, what would you want them to do? In every media adaptation Iris is exactly what she is now. Nothing more than moral support.
She canât become a fighter, even if she wanted to she couldnât hang with Metas. Sheâs nowhere near as smart as Caitlyn or Cisco. She doesnât have a ton of influence. She canât be anything else even if she wanted to. The only issue anyone here had with her was that she was being a detriment. Unsurprisingly the second people stopped treating her like a damn china doll and let her in on everything, she stopped being a detriment.
Hell look at Joe. What does he provide? Heâs a copâŚthat doesnât really help as weâve seen. He canât keep any of the metas contained, being a good shot doesnât really help and when he investigates things they only seem to bring more enemies to their doorstep. But the fact that heâs a loving, caring father is all that is necessary to his character and not a single damn person in this topic will ever say that heâs a worthless character on this show. However according to your criteria he should be as bad as Iris.
In this series, the only reason she got the job as a reporter was because of her writings about the Flash. The writers should continue that storyline with her, only now she WANTS to do that. Then she does have a purpose - to give a very positive perspective on what Flash does. Hell, even do exclusive interviews with the Flash and such. Correct me if Iâm wrong, but Central City loves the Flash. This gives the writers a very believable way to have that happen. Plus she can use her media connections to thwart any journalists who might be writing bad, incriminating, or stories that might lead to the identity of Flash and Co. Not to mention villains can still periodically capture her for info since she seems to know so much, but Iris still risks her life because she is helping Flash in her own way.
By the way, donât use the comics as a defense against why they canât make a character do anything. These shows have proven to take liberties on pretty much all the characters. First off, they made Iris black. And itâs not like Caitlyn Snow works so closely with the Flash in the comics.
lol yeah, Joeâs current role is to inform Barry of shit, have shit explained to him, and show up to crime scenes, get owned, then call in Barry for backup.
Being head of the meta human task force, he has access to information about meta crimes even before Barry. And he can do whatâs necessary if he thinks a meta is involved in a different crime he is investigating. Remember when people started seeing Wells 2.0? Joe kept it quiet. Imagine if some random other cop was sent to investigate that robbery. So many questions would start to be asked.
Plus, letâs say that task force didnât have Joe. What happens if those cops encounter a meta? They are screwed. Joe has the cavalry on speed dial (pun not intended). Or what if a crime is committed by a speedster? Joe can point suspicion away from Flash, even if Barry was somehow involved at the scene.
The writers made a clear cut role for Joe and have used him pretty well (Cop and father figure). Iris on the other handâŚ
She doesnât have to actually be useful, Iâm into comic stuff I understand I have to swallow a lot of illogical bullshit but theyâre not even trying with her.
At least show that her writing in some way sways public opinion.
The issue here is that they are attempting to overextend the role of a character that quite honestly should be a minor reoccurring character at best. Iris should have be about as prominent as the police chief to be honest. It kind of silly to have her at s.t.a.r labs with everyone else who is useful and has a role to just basically be a glorified cheerleader. As it stands sheâs useless and her plot points are annoying and take up time. Sheâs the equivalent of bad filler that the show wants use to take seriously as a character.
No, the issue is the writers donât know what to do with her. Felicity in Arrow was supposed to be a minor character and look at how well they used her. Flash completely transformed Caitlyn Snow into part of the good guys and uses her brains to help the team. Weâre not saying make her integral to every story, but Iris has unique skills (journalism) that is being wasted for âmoral support.â Letâs be real here: everything she said or did for guidance can be filled by somebody else. Joeâs his father figure and can give him sound advice. Getting in contact with Barryâs real dad could have been done by him.
Arrow has some of these problems too, mainly Roy and Thea. Once they became sidekicks, their skills are now just Arrow-light. Everything they can do, Ollie does better. Their character development and use suffer from that, especially since thereâs Diggle and Black Canary (yes, even her) offer henchmen relief. I think the writers noticed this, which is why Thea has different unique attributes - managing the bar (isnât a big deal anymore) and helping with Ollieâs campaign. She can support the team and be useful in areas that the others canât. Ollie is preoccupied fighting a criminal? Thea can easily and believably cancel meetings or step in for him.
I miss Roy. One my favorites in the comics and I liked his character in the show. Had his own little niche as being Ollieâs âeye on the streetâ and his interactions with Sin who the show completely forgot about once he left.
