DevilJin, the main reason I’m not in any tournies yet is I don’t have a stick. Playing on DS3 haha. Will keep you posted on if I get 2 outed.
Man I would love to go to tourneys and test myself even if it means I get beasted and go 2 and out. There are really NO tourneys where I live though. I try my best to make do with what I have in the hopes of one day coming to america to compete though. Im not scared of losing at all.
you get neg for the stupidest shit…neg me more…i love it
I was interested in going to OzHadou this year, but ended up pulling out for a couple of reasons. For one thing, I hadn’t finished my stick yet, so I had next to zero experience playing on one and also the entry fee was around $45, and I only would have been able to stay for shorter than I would have liked.
Now that I have a little more experience with a stick and feel more confident to use one in a competitive environment, I’ll probably try to attend the next one, even if it’s only for casual play.
I think that a big thing some people worry about is the level of competition being a huge gap that you can’t ever close, and it might end up frustrating your opponnent. I played someone online yesterday in 3S who was leagues ahead of me in GGPO, and I actually apologised for not being much of a challenge for him (he didn’t mind of course). After a handful of matches though, we started to get much closer matches and I even managed to win one or two against him, and just had a blast playing someone at such a high level and picking up on new tricks and how to counter them etc. Like someone here said earlier, if you don’t overthink it and just have fun, theres a lot less to worry about.
KOF98 on the other hand, I still got royally owned with no comeback on my part, but I’ll keep at it until I can get half-decent (hopefully):looney:
Ah, I see.
In that case, yes, “that’s lame”, though defeat is understandably discouraging and such.
Ah, I see…again.
Like I said, I skimmed things instead of reading them in their entirety like I usually do since I posted that right before work. My apologies.
You remind me what a huge bitch transportation and time issues become the larger tournaments get. How long does EVO usually last? Three days, right?
Basically.
On top of that, I just find it really weird that a lot of tournaments are being held at people’s places or not. I mean, I can understand WHY (i.e. because arcades are pretty dead in the U.S.), but it just seems like it’s just asking for trouble (at least if a lot of people coming are people you don’t know at all).
Then again, this is coming from someone with trust issues who has never invited someone over to where he lives ever (for various reasons), so that may just be my sentiment.
It’s all good. Even if you did read all of the posts, the other reasons you have posted were never said outright, if any, at all. Which is why I said they were already taken into consideration :p.
And yes, EVO is held over three, very long and squeezed out for as much time as possible, days.
THE best post ive read in a long time DJ.
I have to admit first tourney i went to i was how you say? “scurred?” but that didnt stop me from entering. turns out i got 5th…that was around your way actually in Bmore…anyhow, you 100,000% right my dude the only way level up and be respected is to earn it…and the only way to earn it is to beat respected players…NOT xbl or PSN matches with randoms.
Good shit.
Damn DJ +1000000 rep
Its like you read my mind on this subject. I can understand where the dude is coming from being nervous but it should not in the least bit just STOP you from coming. If u take a fighting game seriously (to the extent u can take a GAME seriously) and you consider yourself nice…theres only one way to know…and 99% of us are shocked in our first tourney to realize how garbage we actually are…but for me personally that only made me strive to get better and FAST. for months i was at CF every week, at almost every tourney levelin up lol. anyways…true story deviljin good thread.
justins like 24. kellz like 27 i think.
being 28 at CF will put u in the young people percentile trust me.
Good to know, I need to remember to visit that place if I ever find myself in NY.
Man you have the WAY wrong attitude.
Set you back? Bullshit…what you are saying is that your fragile ego cannot handle a public loss.
THE ONLY WAY TO GET BETTER AT THESE GAMES IS TO LOSE TO BETTER PLAYERS.
Facing better players and losing to them (despite giving it 110%) is the only way to refine your game.
Nah, not at all. I entered a tourney in Minnesota when I was home for a few weeks, got my ass whipped. Didn’t help that I brought my 360 stick to a PS3 tourney and had to play on a regular controller, but eh. Blew 5 dollars, but got to play someone way better than the usual XBL crowd. Got to see some cool matches, too.
I understand that the only way to get better is to play better people, i pretty much only play people that can beat my ass. Scrubs don’t make me better. anyway…
what i’m saying is, I’m just the type that, if i get absolutely raped, lose some motivation. its a character flaw but that’s fine. too many bad experiences.
i digress, when i go to my first tourney I won’t get crushed. I’d be more than happy to go and get beat by people that are simply better, and to realize why I lost. But getting skullfucked is different. why am i even posting this stupid shit. you might as well neg me.
Wise words from this guy… I still wanna go to a tourney and get my teeth kicked out tho! I do much prefer to sit down for a good few hours at a time.
I suppose the ultimate test of a tourney is the ability to be unphased by the pressure and adapt within seconds to someone’s playstyle. Seems like the likes of Daigo often sacrifice their 1st round figuring people out, not trying to go in for the damage but waiting to see what kind of player they are, then from the second round, busts out the guns…
I agree that at a tournament, because of nerves, being unfamiliar with the playstyle of your opponent or whatever, that you may not play your “best.” But tournaments bring people you’ve not gamed against (likely) to a place where you can finally play one another. If you want the pride of being able to say you’re the best, you gotta go to these places that have guys from other cities, states, provinces or countries. That’s why tournaments are considered the top end for the FGC.
Nerves are the main reason i’m not up on any. Usually my right leg would go crazy up and down for the first few games in anything, offline or on. After that, I calm down some and i’m set. It’s just weird having my leg going crazy in the middle of a room. Even happen when someone brought melee for someone.
I have no problem going to tournaments. Unfortunately I live in an area that doesn’t really have much, if anything, in the way of fighting game tournaments. There is the occasional gamestop thing, but I’ve been to one offline SF4 tournament. Maybe I’m just missing the action, but it’s pretty dead around here…unless I wanna drive down to TX.
PS If anyone lives in or around Norman, OK, PM and we can play or something!:wgrin:
I’ve been going to tourny’s just to hang out with my friends and I’ve met quite a few cool players, but I haven’t entered yet. Firstly, I hadn’t owned the game and the only combo I could do were crouching medium-kick hadouken, it would be a waste of time and money for me to enter, I’d just be giving someone a free pass.
Now, I have a stick (borrowed, gonna buy one eventually), I’ve played quite a bit on-line, practiced my balrog combos, and the reason I didn’t enter last time is because I was poor as fuck. I’ll be entering next time, I’m really excited to see how I fare against people other than my close friends who we all read eachother like open books.
Nerves go away. Not going out of fear is sad. Man up and face your fears. I was nervous as hell my first tournament. After that I vowed to keep going until I conquered that, and now I have. Now they are a blasty blast.
its not that im scared to enter tournaments, its just college now takes up alot of my time and my only resource for playing SF4 during semester time is online play 2-3 hours MAX =/
i wish i could go to a tourny and get my ass beat, cause i want to experience awesome new combos and strats first hand instead of just lookin it up on youtube…
Not gonna lie. I’m horrible afraid of going to a tournament. Don’t want to embarrass myself. Especially since I’m a terrible player
Something in my head says " they’re gonna laugh at you out of the place"
