The first FG with parry?

So I was working on a video covering the history of the parry in fighting games, and I ran into a bit of dilemma. I was convinced that Weaponlord (1995) was the first fighting game to have a parry mechanic. However, digging deeper, I’ve found multiple websites saying that Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (rofl) was the first to have parrying. Just to be extra trolly, the website that apparently originally made the claim (segafans.com) is gone, and outside of a couple of youtube comments, I can’t find any videos or evidence that there is parrying in the game. THAT said, a blogpost that mentions parying in DDV says it was ‘unintentional’, which I’m assuming means it’s some sort of glitch involving blocking, but once again, I have no actual evidence of it.

So basically, I’m making this post because I figure /someone/ on SRK has got to know this, haha.

Samurai Shodown 2(1994) still predates weapon lord.

Excellent. Thank you. Anything to not have to cover DDV is great by me.

some sort of proto-parry, when swords clashed together only

In World Heroes 2 (April 1993) you can reflect projectiles by blocking at the last possible frames.

That’s more a clash system then a parry system.

This, besides, it was possible to counter-throw an opponent in response to his throw (however, this quickly degenerated in a button smashfets where the first player to throw won anyway).

Go to the second or third match. There is a scene where the player winds the sword in circles. That is for defense and can be considered some sort of parry.

correct me if i’m wrong, but I think geese howard was the first fighting game character to have a parry. and was playable. at least on home consoles and after using a cheat code to unlock him.

Technically an inashi/reversal not a “parry” in the way most people think of them.

game IMO with first real parry I believe was Killer Instinct 2. if your opponent went for an overhead, you’d mash jab or something and your character does a move where they stick out their arm and deflect the attack, to which you could counterattack.

Killer Instinct 2 was 1996.

Geese Howard in Fatal fury Special (1993) has a command parry. It operates in a similar way to Dudley’s Cross Counter in that it has an animation you are locked into and it has an auto-reposte (throw), but you don’t take any damage if you land it.
I guess these are all parries, but people will only think of how the SF3 version operates.

People used to call this type of move “Geese counter” because that was the first of its kind IIRC.

That’s a counter. Not a Parry. You may as well call Counter Supers Parry Supers.

Then counter hits…
Dat art of the intercepting fist = parry.

A Counter is different from a Parry. A Counter goes into a specific move that is an automatic followup from whatever it was Countering (High, Low, whatever). A Parry nullifies the attack and allows you to follow up with whatever you want.

geese had his counter in ff1 also, i remember the megadrive version you done it by just pressing back and C, it stopped EVERTHING

Yeah i always thought it was ss2 also, ss3 also had the parry which was 95, also gave it a wiff animation to

I know… I was just saying that if you have counter moves as “parries”, then you should also include counter attacks.
Neither of which make any sense.

EDIT: Sorry for this mess, I don’t know why the extra stuff keeps on poppping out. Anyways, I was wondering if there was a thread or wiki that details the history of fighting game mechanics such as this and others like when the first super meter was.
