So I was working on a video covering the history of the parry in fighting games, and I ran into a bit of dilemma. I was convinced that Weaponlord (1995) was the first fighting game to have a parry mechanic. However, digging deeper, I’ve found multiple websites saying that Double Dragon V: The Shadow Falls (rofl) was the first to have parrying. Just to be extra trolly, the website that apparently originally made the claim (segafans.com) is gone, and outside of a couple of youtube comments, I can’t find any videos or evidence that there is parrying in the game. THAT said, a blogpost that mentions parying in DDV says it was ‘unintentional’, which I’m assuming means it’s some sort of glitch involving blocking, but once again, I have no actual evidence of it.
So basically, I’m making this post because I figure /someone/ on SRK has got to know this, haha.
This, besides, it was possible to counter-throw an opponent in response to his throw (however, this quickly degenerated in a button smashfets where the first player to throw won anyway).
Go to the second or third match. There is a scene where the player winds the sword in circles. That is for defense and can be considered some sort of parry.
correct me if i’m wrong, but I think geese howard was the first fighting game character to have a parry. and was playable. at least on home consoles and after using a cheat code to unlock him.
game IMO with first real parry I believe was Killer Instinct 2. if your opponent went for an overhead, you’d mash jab or something and your character does a move where they stick out their arm and deflect the attack, to which you could counterattack.
Geese Howard in Fatal fury Special (1993) has a command parry. It operates in a similar way to Dudley’s Cross Counter in that it has an animation you are locked into and it has an auto-reposte (throw), but you don’t take any damage if you land it.
I guess these are all parries, but people will only think of how the SF3 version operates.
A Counter is different from a Parry. A Counter goes into a specific move that is an automatic followup from whatever it was Countering (High, Low, whatever). A Parry nullifies the attack and allows you to follow up with whatever you want.
EDIT: Sorry for this mess, I don’t know why the extra stuff keeps on poppping out. Anyways, I was wondering if there was a thread or wiki that details the history of fighting game mechanics such as this and others like when the first super meter was.
