Point and case lol.
I can’t think of many games where the payoff for you know, buying (and in this case paying monthly) in a game only comes at the endgame.
And of course, if it’s horrid up to that point, why would people stick around?
Not to mention that you also ignored the more in depth complaints on the previous page. Sounds more like you don’t like discussing it with other people mainly because you don’t want to back up your points.
Point and case lol.
EDIT: Whoops, forgot the lol.
Talking like I don’t know XI. I didn’t address the stuff on the previous pages because it’s been beaten to death over the last few years. What people seem to forget is how old this game actually is.
I know what I liked and didn’t like. I know what my friends liked and disliked. I know what -needs- to be changed for veterans to enjoy XIV, and have high hopes that they will change them.
I didn’t say you didn’t know XI.
I didn’t say that the game is new. Or old, even. In fact, I didn’t say anything about the game’s age at all.
And I actually said that you did not want to back up your points. So it’s been beaten to death? So what? You’re offering info that supposedly will justify the money and timesink and the supposedly awesome payoff when you finally hit 75 and have yet to divulge it.
That’s all man. You’re still avoiding it, regardless of how much you try to devalue what I said.
True, sorry, I didn’t really address your post well, because I really don’t feel like getting into it all on SRK, or on any forum, really. But so I don’t disregard your post entirely, here are my most basic of points.
The enjoyment one gets from all MMOs is subjective. The environment, peer interaction, story and presentation are what I would say are what your money really goes towards. If you don’t enjoy those things, then XI wasn’t for you.
I think you and I both know full well that the moment you resort to stating that naysayers just don’t “get it” is the moment that all doubt is removed.
Which is not to say “don’t enjoy FF11.” Far from it. But FF11 is a terrible game for a great many not-so-subjective reasons.
Dr. B enjoys tons of shit he thinks is otherwise bad, but Dr. B is never bad and liking him is always in season. (I’m running out of ideas.)
I think using the FFXIV thing already is a bit much, don’t get me wrong, I understand where they’re going with it all, but using the term XIV when you haven’t even released the two games you already have for the term XIII is kind of a obscure thing to do.
One thing I’m really pleased about with Square this time around is that they’re already working on English voice overs, meaning it’s most likely a world release. Thier past track record for keeping you held on by a piece of string is pretty terrible. Usually announced two or three years before their release in Japan, then we have another six or so months while they change all the text and get all the English voices done, it was a long wait and even though this has probably been the longest yet, It’s nice to be at the demo stage and already seeing those voice overs. 2010 was a blow, not to say I didn’t expect it but I was seriously hoping for Q4 2009 at the latest.
I have to vent though, this has been a long wait, a very long wait. I honestly don’t remember waiting and thinking about a game for so long in my whole life than I have right now. 2006 I think it was anounced? I waited two years since I heard about FFVIII after VII, and I believe it was another two years I waited since I heard about IX after VIII (that’s of course how long I waited, not how long the game’s were made for).
This is going to be a four year wait for my own personal, most anticipated game ever and while I still know nothing about FFXIII Versus, I’m already hearing the words XIV. I just hope Square Enix aren’t in over their heads…
Nope.
In my opinion, a cat is a reptile.
In my opinion, Dr. B invented modern mathematics.
How might one enjoy a game if it is “terrible?” Is it like, ‘that movie was so bad, that it was great!’ type of philosophy? If so, I have no money to buy that one.
List the “not-so-subjective” reasons. Don’t even need to elaborate, just bullet them. Then instead of replying to your post, just know that I’ll say something along the lines of “Lol, guess we’ll agree to disagree because while I acknowledge some of those are bad, they in no way, shape or form brought down the entire game as a whole for me, especially considering the options for MMOs at the time of its release and even then after. I still enjoyed my days on FFXI from day one of JP release to the day I stopped playing sometime after ToAU.”
Has anyone played Final fantasy 2? Like the original one? Everyone says it sucks but no ones seemed to played it.
^^It sucks, I’ve played it.
Yeah dude, FFII (not IV or whatever) was awful.
Ahhh damn, what sucked about it?
Completely retarted level up system. Grinding at its worst.
Mortal Kombat: Deception is a terrible game. The fighting mechanic is absolutely godawful, the graphics are meh at best, and the character design is pretty shitty(at its worst, at its best it’s actually really cool).
That being said, why do I enjoy Mortal Kombat: Deception enough to have purchased it on four separate occasions, more than any other game I’ve ever bought? The answer is that quality is a completely different variable from entertainment value. Some people may like senseless, repetitive tedium, and that’s why they enjoy Final Fantasy XI. I like comically bad fighting game engines with intentionally terrible voice acting, and that’s why I like Mortal Kombat: Deception.
In more Final Fantasy-related news. I spent ten dollars on the Playstation Network’s port of Final Fantasy VII. After about two hours with a game I only previously played in 2006(hated it back then), I’m not sure I remember very much about it, as things are surprising me left and right, but my only real complaint with it is that the graphics are borderline sickening to look at and the camera angles are only epic and sweeping as long as I’m not trying to move Play-Doh McStrife from one place to another. The characters I’ve encountered so far are very endearing(except Cloud, that little bitch) and the battle system, while not great, is passable because it reminds me of my one true love, Final Fantasy X-2. Could it be that this game is Final Fantasy X-2’s old-but-still-kinda-hot blond-haired mother?
It’d still take it over FFIII and IV though.
Note that I hate the first four games in general.
But still, FFII led to the SaGa series.
I really liked ffx, But x2 was the worst thing ever, respectfully in my opinion.
Story wise, yeah. Everything else, no.
Everything I wrote in my one post had not-so-subjective reasons.
- Game punishes you for dying. You lose experience and may even delevel.
- Can’t solo after the first dozen levels, forced to join parties.
- Mobs rated as easy can still kill you if you try to solo it at 75 if you’re not prepared. Why even bother listing anything lower than tough if it can still kick your ass?
- You’re in a weakened state after being raised. If it’s a mage then party can usually keep fighting but if it’s a tank it stops gameplay while party stands around waiting for the person to recover.
- Server location gave the Japanese the advantage at claims over everyone else.
- Everyone has to follow certain builds in order to receive invitations. PLD/WAR, BRD/WHM, etc.
- End game is a huge time sink. How many dynamis runs does someone have to do before they get an Excalibur?
Others I didn’t mention but should:
- Job imbalance leading to wasting hours at a time waiting for an invite.
- Poor crafting system. Requires too much time and money. You can have 100 in primary skill and 60 in all others plus be wearing your smithing apron or whatever and still fail. If you fail you lose the item you were working with.
- If there are no mages and you’re melee resting for hp takes way too long. Just another time sink.
Individually, these problems may not have brought down the game but all of them together sure did.
The only time I bring up the subjective reasons was when I listed what I liked about of the game. Storyline, linkshells, music and skillchaining/magic bursting. Only one out of the four have anything to do with gameplay, the rest are merely there to enhance gaming experience. Additionally, this small number of pros aren’t good enough to counteract the rest of the game’s design flaws.
Some problems may have been fixed over the years but IMO the fixes came too late into the product’s life cycle and have only managed to retain existing users. If SE had recognized and fixed the game’s problems (how long did they wait before addressing gilsellers?) in the beginning then maybe they’d attract more players and wouldn’t be stuck at 500,000 subscribers for the last 5 years.
X-2 wasn’t bad. Yeah the story is meh but combat was fun. Unlocked the mascot dress sphere and got 100% in the game. I have no proof but to me it looks like they’re reusing Yuna’s running animation from X-2 for Lightning’s in XIII.
