Their second MMO is already a fascination?
Hasn’t it been ages since FFXI?
Not that I like it, but I don’t think this counts as a preference or fascination, seeing as how it’s been forever since the last one.

I should’ve worded it better but why in the hell are they doing another MMO?
Official FFXIV website is now live (that was fast) and has a better-quality version of the E3 trailer.
A few things to note:
The same reason they make Final Fantasy. it;s makes them money.
Question: Aside from you not liking MMO’s why shouldn’t they make another one?
If I read correctly it will not be a simultaneous release. The PS3 version will release first followed by the PC version sometime later (most likely in 2011).
The English voices in FFXIII sound nice. <3 Vanille.
Because if it does even halfway decent, it is guaranteed revenue, every single month.
I don’t mind MMO’s. But from the general concensus gathered here and at other places, people really weren’t too hot on FFXI, from the negative reviews to people bashing it because it isn’t like WoW.
Plus i didn’t think it was netting them much money.
I swear Nobuo Uematsu composed FFX’s music by himself… but I may be wrong.
I thought Lightning’s English VA was pretty good. The sound quality wasn’t exactly crystal clear, so I’ll wait for an HD version of an English FFXIII trailer before I decide whether or not I think the English voices are crap.
I don’t remember if FFXIII is going to be dual audio or not. Anyone have any input on that?
EDIT: I recall reading that the Xbox 360 FFXIII wouldn’t have both languages because of disc space limitations. That’s why I wasn’t sure if PS3 FFXIII was going to be dual audio or not.
I believe its dual audio for the ps3 but not the 360.
FFX was by three people iirc correctly. Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and some other fellow whose name I can’t remember.
Who cares, go Hamauzu!
I’ve played FFXI since the PS2 release in early 2004. So… I’ve roughly given Square-Enix $900 over the years to play this game, wow that’s not including the $100 I spent on the PS2 HDD/FFXI bundle.
I stopped playing it this year, and I’m kinda psyched to see another online FF tbh. The FFXI community has shrunk significantly, so it makes sense to put out a new online game.
If you’re not into MMO’s (the only one I’ve ever played was FFXI) then you don’t really miss anything considering each FF is independent of every other FF’s universe/story. So you wouldn’t need to play it for continuity’s sake.
FFXI was pretty 5 years ago… but it hasn’t aged very well… I’ll more than likely be getting this next year.
Finally I have something else to fap to besides Quistis…
XIII looks the shit…
Ah, you’re right. I just wiki-ed it up.
Nobuo Uematsu, Masashi Hamauzu and Junya Nakano are the composers.
Hurray for dual audio! I’m the guy who usually prefers subs over dubs. Thanks for the info, Kusanagi.
the reason FFXIV is an MMO is because FFIX is still one of the most played MMO’s in japan with over 3 million active players (and 2 million in the states)
Like someone else said. Square Enix likes money.
I’m pretty sure those numbers include level 1 mules. I don’t think FFXI has pulled 2 million subscribers ever.
Here’s their most recent FFXI press release. Puts the numbers at 500,000 globally.
Ultimately SE will design the game and make it so frustratingly hard and tedious to obtain items players will be forced to play, and pay for a year minimum.
I honestly don’t see why they would.
There is a great deal to be said for accessibilty being key to longevity with such games.
There’s a shit ton of different class+subclass+race combos to be tried if it’s anything like XI.
There’s all the reason you’d need for a year’s sub, right there.
Why should they make it uber hard to obtain good stuff?
That kind of shit just drives away Western console players.
It’d be shooting themselves in both feet - and the head, for good measure.
If there are still 500k subscribers, and they celebrated 2 million active characters recently, that means 500,000 mains at 12.95US(think that was what the first character costs) a month plus 1,500,000 secondary characters each earning SE 1 dollar a month. That gives 12.95500000+11500000 = $US 7,975,000 each month or $95,700,000 per year. Some of it will be eaten by maintenance costs, such as bandwith, servers, gms(lol, yeah right), and developers, but it is a significant inflow of funds for them, even if we do lower the number of subscribers a bit.
The characters themselves aren’t as great as they used to be, but some of the areas in the game are still gorgeous at the right resolution. The character models also still look much cooler than the ones in a certain other, significantly more popular MMOG that shall go unnamed(rhymes with snorecraft).
As much as some stuff about FFXI sucked I still like the fact that it was uber hard. Well I get bored less faster than WoW that’s for damn sure.
Has anyone played The After Years yet? It seems expensive but FF2/4 was the RPG that started me off so I’m anxious to see if its worth getting or if I should act like they never made it.
