Was playing the original Final Fantasy via FF Origins last week. All I did was get the first crystal lit and got annoyed by all the too frequent random battles. Guess I’d forgotten just how frequent they can be.
I still need to beat FFX, buy FXII and beat FF Tactics. Guess I’ll be spending a lot of time posting in this thread when I finally sit down with FFT.
Site update for FFXIII with the three new characters revealed from the 2009 Jump Festa trailer - Gadot, Lebreau, and Maqui - who are members of Snow’s “gang”. Whether they’re fully playable, temporary, or just supporting characters is anyone’s guess. Also, Bahamut has been confirmed by Kitase.
Some news about the FFXIII’s combat and game system have popped up from a playable press demo.
Some highlights:
The battle system is “Evolved ATB” (Active Time Battle), similar to the system used in FF4-9, but allowing for more strategy-based and technical combat. 1up.com compared it Chrono Cross’, but in real-time.
Players will be graded at the end of each battle (between 1 and 5 stars) based on how skillfully and quickly they won the fight. Star grades will affect gameplay in some way, but the extent is not known.
HP is fully restored after every fight, but fights will be made harder to compensate.
Summon magic will return.
Characters build a Break Gauge will each attack, allowing them to enter “Break Mode” and do combo attacks once it reaches a certain percentage.
The game will have a character growth system (like FFX’s Sphere Grid or FFXII’s Lincense Board), but it will be completely unique to this game.
Even with the growth system, not every character can use magic, only the highborn L’cie characters.
Sahz’s chocobo pet may fight with him in battle.
Game will output at 720p and run at 30fps. Devs are trying to at least make the text “readable” by SD TVs.
I never want to see anything compared to Chrono Cross, and the battle system is one of the reasons why. Then again, you can say that Sonny has a Cross-ish battle system, though it does it better and for free. Hmm…
Booo. Grading systems in games need to vanish. I’m willing to bet Bison Dollars that this inspires gamers to find the best way to just tear through the fights, instead of playing with various options.
YES. Finally. This is double-awesome: get rid of some of the RPG tedium (post-battle healing) and give an FF game some challenge. As long as it isn’t FF11 or 12-style grind for 1,000,000 hours challenge, I’m sold.
I hate summons.
I hope this is more like a fighting game super meter and less like a Limit gauge.
As long as characters have their own unique ability sets and stengths/weaknesses, this is cool.
Spiffy.
That’s something I wish Capcom did with SF4.
Hmm. Well, Chrono Trigger is like an early version of FFX-2’s battle system, so if XIII is like an evolved version of X-2’s, that is fucking perfect. I hope there is a lot of post game and optional things for you to do. Every RPG should have those imo.
i downloaded a gameboy advance emulator for my nokia e71 (symbian OS) and i’ve been playing ff tactics advance. i know its not the original but it’s saving me from some very boring lectures and gives me something to do to pass the time between classes.
…why in the hell are their racist comments on a video for final fantasy XIII? The internet I swear…lol
Man I wanna play this game…I’m afraid by the time this game comes out I’m barely gonna have time for anything depending upon where I’ll be. I’m so glad they brought back battle themes…I missed that in XII.
